Easily the best show in a while, lots of rare stuff this time...

"Nutty News" (WB, 1942)
"Wake Up the Gypsy In Me" (WB, 1933)
"Shuffle Off to Buffalo" (WB, 1933)
"Three's a Crowd" (WB, 1932)
Count Screwloose & J.R. The Wonder Dog in "Jitterbug Follies" (MGM, 1939)
"Toyland Broadcast" (MGM, 1934)

Almost every cartoon featured racial stereotypes of some kind, and all [but "Toyland Brodcast"] were shown uncut. Amazing. "Toyland Broadcast" (which by the way is a color cartoon) had a lot of DVNR on it, as it did on the "Happy Harmonies" LD set. It also seemed to be in Portuguese. That was odd.

Nutty News didn't have the upside down title card this time, only the upside down credits.

I really loved seeing Jitterbug Follies again, though. Definately the best Late Nite Black and White in a long time.

Now the Droopy Show is in Portuguese too. I'm pretty sure it's Portuguese, cause after the title card I hear "Brasiliara Telecine", or something like that, I really should be more certain, since I'm half-Portuguese. Oh well.

The foriegn language continued into Droopy. I don't know if you saw that or not, or went to bed, but I was wondering what was going on! I still say this was somebody's last day at CN and they were putting all the good stuff out there while they could!

I lost reception a couple of brief times during Shuffle off to Buffalo...did anyone else have this problem?

By the way, CN broke THE cardinal sin..."thou shalt not show a full-color cartoon on LNB&W"...especially if it's been dubbed in a foreign language.

Of course, selected 'toons are simulcast in Spanish anyway (for those with SAP capability).

I can't tell what language it is, it sounds all muddled to me, as if the narrator is talking too quietly. It's sort of fun hearing him read all the signs in whatever language he's speaking, though. Like being in 7th grade Spanish class all over again.

At least the problem is fixed, "The Stork's Holliday" is in english. And yeah, "Shuffle Off To Buffalo" got interrupted a few times:(

Yeah, so did I. And wasn't it after that that the laguage problems started? Something got mixed up, but it was kinda cool.

Yeah, I noticed that during the opening credits of DAREDEVIL DROOPY, there was some quiet Spanish talking in the background. At first, I thought I was just sleepy and hearing things.

Definitely an interesting show, first time I'd seen "Jitterbug Follies", and I couldn't help but think the "Mother Goose" transformation into the dancing, singing sexy gal was an experiment Avery would later perfect with his "Red" character. I liked this one much better than the "Wanted No Master" cartoon shown a few weeks back. It's a shame Milt Gross wasn't allowed to make any more cartoons for MGM, IMHO his style of humor was just too far ahead of what MGM was ready to transition to at the time. (late 1938)

Sorry but I beg to differ with all the cartoon's not being edited. "Toyland Broadcast was missing the entire "Jungle Fever" musical number at the end. Actually that was a pretty severe disappointment given the unedited rare stuff they left in the previously shown cartoons. What's even more odd is that the version shown at X-mas last year had at least a bit of the ending musical finale, this one just skipped directly to the conductor entangled in the exploded "Sambo Band" music box.

Great show, certainly an excellent selection of Harmon and Ising's best musical cartoons.

This may sound weird, but I didn't hear any foreign languages when watching "Toyland Broadcast" last night. I stayed awake though the entire LNB&W and into the "The Stork's Holiday" on the Droopy show (didn't notice anything there either). I get CN through DirecTV.

I *did* notice the screen going black during "Shuffle Off to Buffalo" as the babies were about to chant "We want Cantor!". I had an image in my head of a network censor yanking the tape out of CN's VCR and stomping on it. ;) Luckily, the cartoon resumed a few seconds later.

I'll check my tape later today.

Actually, Toyland Broadcast was in two-color Technicolor. However, does this mean that we might very well be seeing the B&W MGM cartoons in sepia?

I was quite surprised to see WAKE UP THE GYPSY IN ME because I thought it was a banned cartoon. It was nice to show them uncensored. I guess CN finally figured out that they were able to show them that way during late night hours. Maybe there is hope for Bosko.

Now if only Disney would do the same with their PIC cartoons.

Well I just thought of this, but if I remember from my lurking days here - Jitterbug Follies was one of the few that actually aired on that exact night way back when.

At least I THINK my momory is that good ^____^ That was the first time I saw it and I know it specifically for that 4 and 20 blackbirds joke ^^

As for Wake Up The Gypsy In Me - i was under the impression that it was on a psuedo ban too. Guess not ^__^

Glad to see that they can get one past the ever watchful eye on occasion :)

My family confirms that the foreign language was indeed Brazillian Portuguese. Also, only the dialogue parts of Toyland Broadcast (at the beginning and end) were in Portuguese; the songs were still in English. Sorry I didn't notice it being edited; I'm not as familiar with the MGM cartoons as I am with WB.

Satellite providers have different feeds, as I understand things and in fact cable systems have two different feeds-one for Eastern and Central and one for Pacific and Mountain.

I got around to checking my tape today, even turned up the volume on my TV, and still didn't hear the dubbed foreign language in "Toyland Broadcast".

The first half-minute of "Toyland Broadcast" was in a foreign language, but I could hear the English soundtrack as well. That's the same with my previous copy of "Robin Hoodlum" (UPA), and it was the same language as my only copy of "The Magic Fluke" (UPA). I remember over the summer, CN had a lot of errors with a Jetson episode, which was in the same language and had parts in the wrong place.

Is it just me, or do you think the reason for CN showing "Wake Up The Gypsy In Me" had something to do with the attacks yesterday? Just think about for a second, The ruler in the cartoon gets ousted as his reign by his own country only to get destroyed by a bomb by the people of the country.

Perhaps the reason why some people heard it and some people didnt would be the broadcasting area. Could that have been the answer as to why some heard portuguese and some didnt? I know thats what I heard on my TV...

I noticed that too, right before I stopped and rewound the tape (I, like hiphats, see airing color toons on LNB+W as sacrilegious).

The Screwloose cartoon looked really great picture-quality-wise. Like the print's been well-preserved...

I, too, got the extended blackout (save for a CN logo) in "Shuffle...", plus right before the end it almost jumped ahead to the WB open card for "Three's...", then quickly went back...

Actually, "Wake Up the Gypsy in Me" aired regularly back when LNB&W was on 4 nights a week. (Can't say the same for the other 2 H-I MM's aired last night though...)

Finally watched Sunday's LNB&W show and I was surprised. I didn't think CN would show "Wake Up The Gypsy In Me" again. I am also glad that I can add "Jitterbug Follies" to my collection. Like I have stated previously, I haven't seen this one since CN's "Black & White Christmas" back in the early 1990s. I wish I could find that tape with all those B & W 'toons!!

I also noticed the glitches all of you have been posting re the show. Showing a color cartoon during LNB&W is wrong, period! Secondly, those weird voices carried over into the Droopy show. Watching "Garden Gopher" and hearing that voice was indeed trippy!
