how does the board forum identify who is or is not on?

If it knows my id, why doen't it list it as active?

Some users turned on the "be invisible on active users list" option when they registered. Those people don't show up on the list, unless you're a moderator (we see everything!). If you want to be on the list, turn that option off in the control panel.

I know for a fact I was on the board at that time...but I am not listed? I suppose I was one of the three not listed.

Whenever I look at the list, I see my name. I have never counted to see if the number listed and the names listed match, but now I am quite curious as to what is going on.

The "Currently Active Users" list shows anybody who accessed the boards within the last 30 minutes. If it says 24 members are online but only 21 names appear, that means that three people are in "invisible mode", and have chosen to not have their name appear on the list. Happyheathen, you are one of the people who chose this option. If you want to change it, go to the control panel under "edit options" -- it's the very first thing listed there.

Moderators are able to see everyone who's online, even people in invisible mode. We see their names with an asterisk next to it.

I don't see the people in invisible mode, it says 24 are here, but only 20 or so names show up.:confused:

Whoops. I meant to say only administrators can see people who are invisible. Sorry about that!
