Does anyone know yet if it has been announced that the GameCube 2 will be backward compatible with original GameCube games? I sure hope so. I LOVE being able to play PS1 games on my PS2 (it enabled me to give my old PS1 to a friend who was married with a infant son, and could not afford to buy the console, but could afford to buy the games used & cheap if he had a console). I would be very dissapointed if the GameCube 2 was not backward compatible with the original GameCube... :(

I think one of the main guys in Japan announced that the N5/NES5 (N5 seems to be more common, but I like NES5 more, and it's used on occassion) would be GCN compatible.

Awesome! :D
Now, let's address another thing I'm wondering about. I also heard that the GameCube 2 will have a Game Boy Player built-in this time. Does anyone know any information about that?
:eek:

Why is everyone so hyped up about the NGC 2 when we've only got 3 years on the current one and still have yet to see it's full potential with great games comming soon like MGS Twin Snakes. Metroid Prime 2, or Wind Waker 2.

the Gamecube came out Christmas season 2001 right? so that makes it 2 years old.
a Game Boy Player built-in to the next Nintendo console...that'd be a pretty cool idea....

Ah, you misunderstand my question! :) I am in no rush at all for the GameCube 2 to come out; I love my GameCube (and PS2; no XBox though) and enjoy the games I have on it, and eagerly await the sequels you mentioned. I was just wondering because (1) I bet the GameCube 2 is in development now, since the design and engineering takes several years; and (2) backward compatibility is very important to me.

For good or ill Nintendo is a little out of step with the console generations... but that doesn't mean that they can't force the next generation to count itself from THEM. So its time to start speculating! Personally I'm disappointed that there will be no cell-type game console in the next generation. But I'm interested in seeing Nintendo's new offering.

Why would they be called "Metroid Prime 2" and "Wind Waker 2"? Wouldn't they be called "Metroid (insert here)" and "The Legend of Zelda: (insert here)"?

I'm sure they will have more creative titles; those are just their working titles, and an easy way for us fans to reference them until we know their 'official' titles. :p
As for calling Nintendo's next console the GameCube 2... what's wrong with that? Especially if it's going to be backward compatible with the original GameCube, that simple and efficient name will reinforce the backward compatibility to less savvy consumers... :)

All information has pertained to an N5 or NES5, not a GCN2. I personally think NES5 would be cool enough to name the system.
And we're talking about them because we might see one as early as late 2004 or early 2005. Nintendo wants to be the first out of the gate this time, and there's no doubt we'll see images of the PS3 (Gee, original) and XBox Whatever later this year.

Course, both Nintendo and Sony have new portables that should be available towards the end of this year. That oughta keep you busy for a while.
And broke too. :p

We'll know soon enough, but I think it's too early.

Well, I hope they call it a GamePyramid or a GameSphere. It kind of pissed me off how none of their systems previously has had any sort of pattern. I mean, Super Nintendo was an awesome name, so the next system should have been called an Ultra Nintendo. Then they came out with the name Ultra 64, which wasn't bad, then they changed it to Nintendo 64 which was just plain lame. Anyway, I assumed they'd continue with the numbers thing and call their next system Nintendo 178 or Nintendo 1,568,928,922 or something like that, then they made the stupid decision of naming it the Gamecube. WTF? Find a pattern and stick with it!
Why the hell should they have a pattern?? It's better to come up with original names then to just change the number at the end of the name.

NES5 = cool
PS3 = unoriginal
i fail to see your logic. they are both pretty unoriginal.

They'll think of some kind of creative name. I mean we're talking about a company that has a pink blob as a mascot.

Looks like it may indeed be backwards compatible

Because if you're not a hardcore gamer you get confused. Parents have an easy time with Playstation and Playstation 2 but are confused by Nintendo's idiotic method of naming systems.
Besides, what if Nintendo keeps on making systems 20 years down the road? Will you even be able to tell which system came first? I mean Super Nintendo sounds more powerful that Gamecube. Yet, clearly Playstation 2 sounds more powerful than Playstation.

You know, I think companies work on new systems way too quickly. We don't need a new version very 3-5 yrs. I remember when when we had NES, SNES, and Genesis, and those lasted years before a newer version came out.
There are only a few games that have reached big potential for each system, infact, I don't think any game has reached PS2's potential yet. I love GC best, but it doesn't mean I don't like PS2.

Actually, Kain brings up a good point. Sega failed because they abandoned their systems way too quickly. Why bother making the Saturn when the 32X hasn't reached it's potential yet? Why make the Dreamcast when you haven't even made a Sonic game on the Saturn yet? Of course, if all the systems are backwards compatible then chances are they'll continue to make games for the older systems. I mean, I think they're still making Playstation 1 games.

Because gamers are always looking torward the future when PS2 turned one month people were talking about PS3.
Why bother making the Saturn when the 32X hasn't reached it's potential yet?
Because they needed a more powerful system to stand a chance against the Playstation & Nintendo 64.
Why make the Dreamcast when you haven't even made a Sonic game on the Saturn yet?
Because it was too late to save the Saturn at that point.
