View Full Version : Johnny Storm
We all know that as it stands now, Johnny's fingers will only flame on in the upcoming FF movie. At first I thought they were doing that because it was too hard to do a good fire visual effect for as much time necessary for Johnny. But then I got my X2 DVD, and Jean Grey goes into a great fire effect. Is that too much to ask for Johnny? Or was that only possible because she was only flaming for a few seconds? Does anyone know if creating the visual effect for that is too hard of Johnny?

yes. make that, YES :)
it's hard enough to create realistic fire... harder yet to have things like explosions or jets of fire (like the fire-breathing dragon in shrek). but to create a PERSON made of realistic fire for more than a few seconds, i'm pretty sure right now it's impossible. not to mention that if it WERE possible, artistic license would ruin it as you would need to be able to see eyes and mouth for when he's speaking.
plus, if someone were on fire for more than a few seconds, everything around them would get lit, the writer probably didn't want to explain why johnny storm doesn't set everything on fire.
 I figured as much, X2 just gave me hope. Maybe it'd be easier to find an actor who will willingly be set on fire. :p I didn't know that the fire in Shrek was that much harder than the rest of Shrek. I remember seeing some behind the scenes thing where they made white balls and then added texture or something like that. I figured visual effects artists had that down pat like with Pyro and the dragon. Maybe they could do something like Nightcrawlers bamf effect. Just change it from black to orange. They could set the effect to always be on the actor's body instead of just for a few seconds, then create a special particle effect that looks like fire. I don't mind if it doesn't look completely real.
Sigh, that probably wouldn't work I'm just hoping, but if it did it would probably be too hard or too expensive or the length of time would mess things up again. :moon:
Do you think it could be possible if they devoted all the visual effects in the movie to him? I know that won't be because they all require fx. Thing alone will probably have to be comparable to the Hulk. Maybe it won't be so bad, or maybe we could wait a few more years. Or they could just make an animated movie, but that's definitely not going to happen.

Hearing that news from a couple of months ago, I almost don't want this film to be made yet in that respect. I love the Fantastic Four, and to me the comic book was as big as the Lord of the Rings is to literature. It's the world's greatest comic magazine for a reason, and by not being true to the source material, makes me dislike it already. I mean, Spider-Man's organic webbing is fine, because it doesn't get in the way too much of the story. Sure, Spidey was all about not having enough money to pay for his webbing, which was kinda important to the comic. But to the movie that Raimi made, it fit for the organic webbing, and all is forgiving. But this is the Human Torch, one of the first Marvel heroes ever, not only that, but his very name eludes to him being on fire. So, more power to them if they can pull it off, but I doubt it seriously. This is a franchise however, maybe they can come up with something in the next movie where other body parts begin to flame on. At least that's what I would do.
CG fire is usually you can ever see. Just like Iceman in X-Men, I have no problem with them not making a full man of ice/fire, if anyway has seen anything of the original FF movie, then you'll know how crappy a fully-lit Human Torch will look.
I would be more worried about The Thing if I where a big FF fan...
