I understand why CN doesn't show cartoons like Universal or Terrytoons, but couldn't these other studios air their cartoons on a channel they own?
Yes, they just don't want to... They don't have a problem with making new cartoons featuring old characters, though. Are they still making that new Heckle and Jeckle show?
The Viacom owned networks (like Nickelodion) could probably show Terrytoons, as well as many Paramount Cartoons.

They have a problem with stuff they don't own, you mean. A lot of Toonami faithful, for instance, enjoy the popular cartoons of the 80s, and the only such cartoons to appear on Toonami are Thundercats (which sucks) and Voltron (which was then only a number of episodes, and not the whole run). Probably has to do with the fact that the dominant 80s studios (Marvel, Sunbow, Filmation, and DiC, primarily) hopelessly outclassed a lot of H-B's entire library (to say nothing of how H-B sucked in the 80s).....

The "they" that Jack was referring to were the current owners of the Universal and Terrytoons cartoon libraries (Universal and Viacom)... not Cartoon Network.

If I remember right, Nick at Nite used to have a HECKLE & JECKLE show, but it was very short lived. I remember my dad telling me about it when it was on, and showing me a TV article on it, with a picture of the talking magpies. Too bad I didn't tape it. :(
Actually Nick or Fox could easily make a show during the later hours (9PM-12AM) for the cartoons.

I don't recall Heckle and Jeckle ever appearing on Nick at Nite. I do seem to remember a show on Nick called Cartoon Ka-Blooey that showed the later Paramount cartoons like Honey Halfwitch. Anyone remember that?

I Remember Cartoon Ka-Blooey!!! I knew I had seen some Honey Halfwitch cartoons before.
I don't remember too much of those cartoons, though.

Yeah, the name Cartoon Ka-Blooey is familiar, and I know I've seen Honey Halfwitch.
As others have mentioned here before, Nick had the somewhat-questionably named Weinerville, which was a puppet show with cartoons interspersed. The cartoons included UPA cartoons like Mr. Magoo and Gerald McBoing-Boing, and also segments from the Alvin Show including one of my faves, Clyde Crashcup.
I also don't remember any Heckle and Jeckle show on Nick, though I do remember seeing them on local channels when I was very young...probably before you were born, Thad.
