In my History of 2D Animation Class we had the pleasure of watching "Mr. Magoo and The Ragtime Bear", "Rooty Toot Toot", and "Madeline" - all UPA shorts.

Lemme guess - The Evil Empire that is Di$ney owns the Columbia UPA's, correct? They never show em :P

Actually, Columbia is one of the few studios to own most all of their theatrically released cartoons. They restored them a few years ago and put most of them them is a 65 episode package. It's just that no American TV network has picked it up yet. If you want to see UPA (as well as Mntz/Screen Gems) on TV, move to Europe.

I was wondering, does Columbia-Tristar own any major TV networks? I know Viacom owns several, yet refuses to air the classic cartoons it owns, and I know Universal has some sort of outlet through Fox, but doesn't show the Lantz Cartunes...

Mr. Yak~

Noooooo Columbia does not own ANY TV networks, major or minor. We are protected by the federal government from Columbia owning any TV stations, and in practice BROADCAST networks. The reason??? The fact of Columbia Pictures (and also CBS records) being owned by a persistently foreign company... SONY!!! They could pull a Rupert Mudoch and work something out if they get the bug to get deeper and deeper into American media and culture. (Murdoch the Australian accomplished it by becoming an American citizen, thus could buy TV stations for the fledgling FOX network). Whether the Japanese hierarchy and stockholders could do that is possible but extremely unlikely. Unless they sold a controlling share of SONY to American stockholders or companies. There's persistent speculation that at some point SONY would chuck in the towel, put the movie and recording business on the block and head back to Japan's lovely shores. Like Matsu*****a they have not done as well in American entertainment as they had fancied...

Iffffffff SONY does finally give up then a very likely buyer of Columbia Pictures and CBS records would be the current owner of CBS Inc... None other than Viacom!!! Viacom is dying to become a full clone of AOL-Time-Warner in all businesses, but lack a recording division. (It would also finally reunite the two halves of CBS). Whether they would keep both Columbia Pictures and Paramount operating would be a major question mark.
