There goes my plans of doing a "JL" talkback.
Oh, well. I'm not mad.
After reading SJJ's nice review of this episode (which has lots of SPOILERS), It looks like I made a wrong assumption about the sweater scene. Now it's not as funny as I thought it was.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to more development in the Green Lantern/Hawkgirl relationship.

i'd like to go make a snow angel.
all those kids in one place. don't tell michael jackson.
of al l the things they could have shown, they had to mock howard the duck with that rapper. but considering they made fun of defenders and x-men i guess it was overdue.

Wow. Another unconventional Christmas episode. It actually worked through and through. There was nice development for all the JL characters that were in there, but I'm left to wonder why Batman and Wonder Woman (especially Wonder Woman) were excised.
I found what the Ultra-Humanite did to that toy most hilarious, and it showed a rather nice dimension to a mad albino gorilla like him. At least he's a bit more cultured and... human than Gorilla Grodd.
Overall, one of the better Christmas specials. Nice job Paul.

That was nice. I don't know why people seemed so freaked out about it (it was as if they thought it would be like FLCL). I don't have any complaints really; this episode felt more like Christmas than the PPG movie "Twas The Fight Before Christmas". I especially enjoyed the bar fight (way better than the snow fight), Flash's entire story (yes, it was better than the poopy sound), and The Kent's special way of wrapping Clark's presents. Four stars leaning on four and a half.
P.S.: Justice League currently has 221 votes at the DVD Toons poll (I voted for Batman thus giving him 598 votes and the title of first place).
And I liked Holiday Knights. Reminds me of "Gotham Girls" with more male characters.

the animation is good on this one.

i wonder how joker stopped having those dark souless eyes before his jl league days. or why he had them in the last part of santa episodes.

Flash was starting actually with good writing and good lines...then we accidentally walked into the Grinch Who Stole Christmas. Choose your poison, cartoon or Jim Carey, I actual like both myself. Flash just sitting there and waiting to get blasted becuase he was depressed over a toy was rtidiculous.
But since it was corny, it was nice to see Ultra-Humanite have a sweet night, even if it was bittersweet.
Overall, a nice, fun, and goofy episode for the holidays.
Also, I doubt most people duking it out in a bar will chummy up and wrap arms before following to sleep from the fight and the flurb :p

Christmas Time For Our Favorite Heroes Will Be Found In The Justice League Solo Episode Review of "Comfort And Joy".
Some intresting stories on our collection of heroes. It kind of paralled "Holiday Knights" but these stories were more intertwined. From Flash and Ultra Humanite getting that Disco Duck to Hawkgirl's and Green Lantern's snowball fight (John's got some good snowball moves, but they're no match for my Mega Snowball Cannon) and then left the planet for a bar fight, and Clark returning home for the holidays and J'ohnn discovering the truth meaning of Christmas.

The Czyz-nit on JL, "Comfort and Joy"
I take comfort and joy in the fact that Justice League still sucks. And that it's only half as bad this week, being only 30 minutes And that eggnog is evil.
Show opens with the JL saving two planets no one gives a rat's ass about. But it looks like the residents of one of them are related to those little green freaks from Toy Story, only blue, and not as funny. Maybe they were octopi with claws. Who knows? Anyway, the team decides to take a break for the holidays. I recommend retirement altogether, but I'm not writing the show.
Instead of ripping the show as I saw it, I'll rip all three parts apart from each other.
GL decides to go snowboarding. As much as I like the JL crew finally trying to make him cool, it's way too late. Anyway, HG clearly doesn't get the point of the holiday season. You know, the part that involves draining millions of dollars to buy gifts that will only be returned the day after, or sold for half price three months later. GL tries to make a snowman, and ultimately ends up in a snowball fight, which GL wins.
HG then suggests that they celebrate the holiday her way, by going to a strange alien planet with over-violent aliens. Last time this happened, they ended up on War World. You know, the really bad episode. Anyway, I figure she is going to get piss drunk, beat up some locals, and pass out, and GL has to fly her back to Earth. Guess what happens? HG liquors up, starts a fight between GL and a Doomsday wannabe, and the whole bar erupts in chaos. Oh, and she kisses John at the end after everyone passes out. But of course she doesn't because she has stamina. She's obviously been there before. You know, John, when you wake up, you have to tell HG that you two can't be having dates in alien bars like this when you marry and have your love child. And just think, if John had to work this hard to get a kiss from Hawkgirl, imagine what he'll have to do to get to second base. And then of course, he'd have to actually be awake to get any enjoyment out of the whole thing. It amazes me too, how Hawkgirl can just walk into a bar, belch like mad, punch big alien guys and not be anything but "a man and a woman." Just talking about this makes me want to puke.
And speaking of puke, Superman invites J'onn to the Kents for the holidays. You know, the next time I want to see a bad parody of ALF, I'll catch the reruns. Anyway, Mrs. Kent notes how Kara is out skiing with Barbara. I wonder if they have a snowball fight, go to some bar with a bunch of big guys, get liquored up, beat the snot out of everyone, and then have one kiss the other... J'onn scares the cat, then gets an ugly-looking sweater for a gift. I wouldn't want to embrace the newfound tradition of Christmas, either, with gifts like that. Superman tries to peek at his presents, but they are lined with lead. That automatically makes them smarter than the Joker. Anyway, J'onn has had enough, so he leaves. He sees a kid calling out to Santa, and so he does a little home invasion and swipes an Oreo. Then, he goes to a church and listens to Christian fanatics signing something about the world. I think it went something like this.
The world stinks a lot,
this show has no plot,
I want it to end now,
before I have a cow,
but since it's the season,
I don't need a reason,
to be a man of class,
so shove it up you ass!
Christmas morning arrives, and the Kents wake up to hear J'onn having gas in the bathroom. Well, that's what it sounded like. Because it wasn't signing. I didn't see his lips move. And the cat who hates him was on his lap. I think J'onn killed it while trying to fight the urge.
And while we are on the subject of bowel miscues, Flash plays Santa to a bunch of kids, who want the rapping rubber duck who poops. Because rappers like to have gas, not make sense, and sell records. "Tickle Me Elmo" would be so proud. Flash goes around the world to find out that all the ducks are gone. Only in a thriving, leeching capitalist market can the holiday season really mean something, after all. Flash goes to Japan where the rapping dolls are made and grabs the last one. That's funny, making kids work overseas three dollars a day to make a doll that only Americans will understand. And when people actually stop to think about the other kids who have bigger worries than getting some jacked up rap doll for a day in December that doesn't mean much, they can't think. Because helping the world is UNICEF's job.
Where was I? Flash is on his way back when he runs into the Humanite, who didn't like his opera TV in prison, so he broke out. Anyway, he and Flash fight until Flash appeals to his inner-child, so Humanite smacks Flash out, then fixes the rapper doll. Flash, dressed as Santa, and his elf, Freaky the Abominable Snowman, give the doll to the kids, and the doll proceeds to tell a story, yo. Humanite has the right idea in deprogramming the poops. I mean, kids can learn how to fart any day of the year. But hearing a rapper tell a coherent holiday story with a voice that sounds like it didn't come from someone either sucking helium, on fast forward, or a Ph.D. in Ebonics, that only comes once a year. Humanite gets an aluminum tree as a thanks, complete with club lights and a free pass back to jail. For someone who gave the best gift of all in clarity, Humanite got screwed.
Batman had the right idea staying in the Watchtower. I mean, I remember the one holiday where he got suckered by Ivy and Harley, then got shot by the Joker on New Year's. Stay up in space where it is safe. And stay away from this episode if you want to be safe. BTW, what did Wonder Woman do?
Thumbs all the way down, or negative 5 stars. Take your pick.

Those JL writers have been on a roll lately- here's another quality ep! It was interesting to see the league members celebrating the holidays in such variant ways.
My favorite bits include:
GL grabbing a chance to do a little snowboarding. And later engaging HG in a snowball fight (very probably a tribute to the one in the 1970 movie 'Love Story.')
Clark Kent *still* indulging in the childish urge to get a sneak peek at his Christmas presents (good thing his folks know to 'foil' his efforts.)
Flash going all the way to Japan to find that hard-to-get toy. Give the guy credit for going the extra mile (even a couple thousand of 'em) to keep his promises!
Hawkgirl revealed to be an enthusiastic Fight Club member (one does wonder what John's gonna think of this, when 'the day after' arrives.)
The Ultra Humanite continues to display an intrigueing combination of villainous and admirable traits. Those kids are, indeed, likely to get more meaningful enjoyment from a toy that tells them classic Christmas stories.
J'onn finally making friends with the Kent's cat. Perhaps the critter appreciates those unearthly tonal frequencies?
Kudos, and Happy Holidays, to all the Justice League creators!

Heh, I really liked this episode. From GJ and Hawkgirl's snowball fight to Clark trying to look as his lead wrapped presents:p And Hawkgirl starting the bar-room brawl was great, plus a little kissing action at the end. It was so cute;) And Flash was great, with the Disco Duck and Humanite. Holiday Knights was good too. Yay for Christmas episodes:D

This episode really appealed to me.
With my little sister on deployment, and missing christmas at home, it was nice to see some of my favorite characters in a less combat-oriented environment.
I DO realize that this can be considered sappy.
(had I watched this episode at anytime in the past 10 years, I would have felt that way myself.)
But love of this sort of thing truly is an acquired taste.
It was nice seeing the "man" within the superman for once. the same goes for all the characters. I believe that episodes like this add a psycological depth to the characters that would not exist otherwise.
What can I say. I fully enjoyed this episode for what it is. (It is whatever you make of it.) :D
edit:
I also loved the moment between Comissioner Gordon and Batman at the end of Holiday Knights.

I find it sad that Paul Dini, who's writing for this show for the first time, has a better grip on these characters and their powers than the people who regularly write for this show.
Liked: Hawgirl not being as uptight as usual, MM scenes, the parody of the impossible to find Christmas toys.
Still, I enjoyed TNBA more, I miss the nice animation. Harley and Ivy are always fun to watch.
Speaking of the bicurious, I liked the nod to "Babs and Kara" being gone together. You're a naughty man, Dini.

Since I've seen "Holiday Knights" before I'll pass on the comments for that episode. after all it is indeed one of the better Batman Eps (with Harley, Poison Ivy, Clay Face, and Mr. J. being on the "Naughty" list..)
but as for "Comfort And joy" I'll comment...
First off the Hawkgirl and GL scenes were fun to watch. especially the barroom scenes. (Anyone up for a Glass of Flurb? :D It's very Tasty!)
Second Flash, and his help with the Orphanage kids (but what's this about DJ Rubber Ducky? Is he supposed to be sort of a Cross between Barney, Teletubbies, and Sesame Street? (with a Name like DJ Rubber Ducky  ..)
but at least Flash goes to Japan.. and gets the kids one...
J'onn and Supes Home for the Holidays..(also did anyone catch the note that Kara (Supergirl) and Barbara (Batgirl) Gordon were probably on a vacation at the time? (Seems only fair that Kara and Barbara would be...
and the Kents oh they make Christmas feel so good, especially Martha giving J'onn a Sweater. (that he literally grew into..)
but the snowball fight between GL and HG plus all the other things they did were cool..
but Perhaps the funniest scene was Flash and Ultra-Humanite (As Santa and Freaky the Snowman! mending ways and showing the kids a great time (with a New and Improved DJ Rubber Ducky that instead of Spouting Rap, spouts Classical Xmas Tales! and they said the poopy sounds were okay?? No no Let's hear a Christmas Carol!)
for a 30 Minute ep, this one's a great JL Christmas ep.. of course seeing GL and HG snuggled up in that Alien's arms.. indeed it will make me wonder what GL's Hangover will be like..
And finally J'onn fitting in with those Martian Hymns..(that soothed the kitty!)
it's interesting that Martian Music is so Classical! (I can see an Opera Career of the Martian Manhunter! either that or being a variation of Santa! MMMM Cookies!)
all in all a Great Xmas ep, 4.8 out of 5..

Justice League
Once again, John'n finds out about another great human tradition.
Batman
Batman: TAS is still as dark as I remember.
Cool. They said "Oh my god!" Modern Y7 shows could take a lesson from this.
I like JL Joker better.
All the lines that Bruce said would be just as good as if Steven Jay Blum was saying them.
IMO, Big O (both seasons) > Batman: TAS, but it's not like it wasn't close.

Cool. They said "Oh my god!" Modern Y7 shows could take a lesson from this.
Kids WB was starting out and pretty much let the crew get away with anything they wanted. Bloody violence and heavy innuendo were also used for these episodes. Of course, once the block stabilized, the network monkeys let their stupid demands come out "We want a teenage Batman! Kids can relate better!"

As I know all have been waiting for it, and none's night can be complete without it, I have deigned to bestow my opinions on these episodes here, in short, forthwith:
JL: Not the greatest, but well watchable. I thought the... Ultra Humanite is his name? Well, I thought that he might have been leaving character to do what he did... but as no one else commented, perhaps not. Good for watching, anyway.
Batman: Smartly shown after the JL episode. It was very good.
nice aliens. i swear i saw some gangster from the movies, you dirty rat.
the grift that keeps on grieving,
None of the actors in classic Hollywood famous for playing gangsters ever actually said "you dirty rat." The one usually associated with the phrase, Jimmy Cagney, wasn't in this episode(at least, not that I saw). The one I saw caricatured was Edward G. Robinson(dude with the jowls and the cigar).
And... just to make sure, because I'm terribly pedantic when it comes to words, you do know that grifting is an actual word, and not a relative of stuponfucious.(most, in my experience, don't)
i can see why this one is late in airing past the series' ending. murder is not for kids, mmm.
This isn't it's first airing. :¬}
Holidays Knights was great.
"We were going to kill him anyways."
"We got his credit cards, what's to worry?"
Joker's Newyear party REALLY reminded me of Schwaltz(sp)'s party in 'Enemy is Another Big!'
Whew! I wasn't the only one who had that reaction! :¬D
"People engaging in various levels of debauchery... check. Said people wearing masks... all of the same sort... check check. Said masks similar or identical to one worn by villain... check. Mortal danger planned for said people by said villain at party's (FL)Climax... check."
Geh... this reminds me of Big O, a line from Rurouni Kenshin reminds me of FLCL... what's next, .hack reminding me of Trigun?

The story that Howard... excuse me; Rubber Ducky was telling was actually 'The Nutcracker'. But it's possible he has 'Christmas Carol' in his repertoire, too.
Even if it is just one story, one does rather wonder how the Humanite managed to record so much in the interval when Flash was knocked out. Or, did UH fortuitiously already have a recording prepared? Perhaps he has an 'uncorrupted' kid or two on his own Christmas list.

Holiday Knights Review
God, I miss Batman solo. Great animation, the fact that they can mention killing, nice fights, and that funny little scene with Ivy & Harley shopping all give this episode a little charm that seemed to lack in the current JL episodes. 3.5 out of 5.

I find it amusing how I can write a negative review, and be called a scrooge, get a lump of coal, told to lighten up, and be accused of being angry. I actually had fun bashing this episode. I wasn't angry in the slightest, because I wasn't even expecting this episode to be worth zero stars. Paul Dini tried, but even a miracle writer can't save this show.
And just so you know, I am not the only one who thought this episode sucked.
Later.
JL Thoughts:
Ah, guess they can't even have a holiday episode, without saving some world, nice opening with building that gravitational device.
No Bats & WW. Hmmm.. So Bats was begging for monitor duty.. Riiiiiiight.. ;)
Nice semi sappy moment with GL showing Hawk Girl the fun of snow. Wicked snow fight, superhero style.
I knew Flash was gonna have trouble with DJ Ducky.. Guess even superheros can struggle to get the must have toy.
Nice to see the Kents. So Kara(sp?) aka Supergirl is skiing with Barbara. Gordon??
Also nice to see Clark get some screen time on JL.
Gifts wrapped in lead foil. LOL. I never would've even thought of that.
Nice to see J'onn really fill out that sweater he was given.
That was pretty funny seeing Hawk Girl place her mace in GL's hand. Guess there's nothing like a bar room brawl on Christmas.
LOL. I never thought I'd see those two working together at the end. Talk about improvements to DJ Ducky.
Nice ending, definitely a good holiday episode.
Overall an A. Good solid holiday episode, had some action, had some humor with a bundle of sappiness surrounding it.

1. The JLs are smart. They should know by now that something is going on between GL and Hawkgirl. That li'l "staying behind and catch up later" excuse is sooo obvious. ;)
2. And Howard the Duck makes his long-awaited appearance! :bosko:
3. During that bar-room fight, didn't it seem like the guys were fighting Hawkgirl just to try to cop a feel? :anime:
4. Y'know, if they ever tie the knot, Hawkgirl would be the man of the house. GL can't even handle a flurb, burp like a real man, and appreciate a good ol' bar-room scrimmage. Yeah, can you imagine that pretty face (w/o the mask) acting like that? :D
