well... the animation and character design looks like crap, Odie should not be a real dog, I'll reserve further judgment...
...but they did make a good casting choice with Murray. After the late Lorenzo Music, he is the perfect guy.

I saw it as I was posting it on the Ticker (http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?threadid=96955), and damn, it looks friggin' awful.

Yeah, I just saw it, and yeah that's all I want to see of this awful looking movie.
It just doesn't look or feel right. I loved the older Garfield comics (now when I read them in the paper, they feel kind of boring) with John, Odie, and they actually went to places and did things. This doesn't look like... anything. Just a talking cat.
Blech. Give me the Garfield and Friends cartoon anyday.

i'm sorry in advance, but maybe garfield needs a change. after 25 years of garfield being mostly the same old, maybe it should be reinvented for a new era. after all, how many cats really live to be 25? new cat ,new times.

anyway, just thought you should know. my whole hometown of brownsville, texas hates garfield. they have conspired for 25 years to let me know how they (who hate garfield) felt when one time, i told them i liked garfield. hopefully being home a lot more has led them (who hate garfield) to believe me dead, so they cannot say anything bad about garfield for a long time.
that being said, this movie has a lot of interest for me. i think a real dog COULD play odie. and i think the animation for garfield is GOOD. i will watch this movie some times next year, even though i myself hate garfield, because noone would let me love him and not drive me to absolute, total hulky rage. owie!
cause odie is the dog, homes.
it's a good thing i'm going on vacation soon.

It looks sooooooooo bad. This was a bad idea from the start now, but Live Action is the trend these days.

I liked it better when Garfield's mouth didn't move, like in the cartoon.

I have to admit it's watchable.
But it's still awful. Garfield looks like a realistic stuff cat just like Luna from the Live Action Sailor Moon.
Oh Jim Davis, why did you have to sell out Garfield in this way! :bawling:

I'm going to hang fire on this. I didn't think Garfield looked THAT bad... I do agree I would have preferred a CG Odie as well. The gags and expressions don't look amazing but it does have Bill Murray... I'll awair more details..

get over it. they updated superman and batman for the 90's. they updated x-men and spider-man for the new millenia. isn't it about time they updated garfield as well? after all, johnny music couldn't have lived forever. and cats really don't live to be 25.
i guess now, we'll know what kind of breed odie is. and that is one heck of a actor of a daschund dog that plays him. a canine thespian from what i've seen.
sometimes, you have to suspend disbelief, and just have fun.
so he has green eyes, huh? i guess that's normal.

Well, I don't care much for the character designs (having a CG cat and a real dog? Why not make them either one or the other?), and the trailer frankly wasn't all that funny. Gotta love their timely send-up of that scene from Risky Business, though. I'm sure that's never been done before.
Anyways, I'll reserve judgement until I see more of it, though it doesn't look or feel quite right at this point.

I won't panic yet. When they start to show the trailer in theaters, if they haven't already, and maybe one with different scenes, then I'll think a little more about it.

From the teaser, I don't think it looks all that good....

Dude...just because someone doesn't like it doesn't mean they should 'get over it'. Your opinion, wrenchien, is that it looks good. Others will dissagree, thats life. I think you'll have to get over the fact that 80% of Garfield fans are going to reject this...thats their opinion. Your not going to win anyone over by bad mouthing then for not liking the teaser of all things.
Anyway, I'll with hold my judgement till the movie actually comes out and/or a full trailer is produced. I really haven't been following the decisions made on this film, but I am very aware of that the ones made have majorly upset fans of the strip and show. I can tell you right off the bat that I don't like the decision to make Odie real and garfield CGI.

Well I watched it last night and while I'm not expecting blockbuster cinema I think it could be fun. I had wanted to watch it again before saying this, but since the link seems to be down now... I honestly think Odie will work better as a real dog. Maybe if I see the movie I will feel differently, but the trailer makes me feel America's favorite yellow dog will be better as live-action.

This trailer gives me a forboding sense of doom. Why Bill WHY?! Can someone just explain to me why Bill has to alternate great films like Royal Tennenbaums and Lost In Translation with crap like this?

It's like the took the characters from Garfield, put them infront of funhouse mirrors, copied the images from the mirrors for the character designs for this movie, and gave them totally different personalities than what they're supposed to have.

Well I'm not sure what to think but I think I might like the movie.
Pop culture cretins!
Garfield has turned 25! It's like a country is celebrating a birthday! The whole year (and longer) is one big party celebrating Jim Davis and his most popular character.
This movie is based on a comic strip. Schultz and those who knew him would be reviled if the Peanuts gang were 're-invented for the 21st century' - that is not what this movie is doing for Garfield, either. They're simply paying a huge compliment by putting the cat on film.
The first and foremost and best incarnation of the Garfield characters are in the newspapers and countless books that Davis has given to us - the film industry and film fans take things too seriously these days. Understand that this is just a bit of fun.
Bloody yanks getting it before everybody else, bah!

The problem is that it's a bit of fun that's straying too far from its' source material.
The trailer made my brother weep, oversensitive clod. I agree that Garfield looks and acts wrong, though Bill Murray's a great choice. Liz also seems too perky and young as opposed to her cynical, middle-aged self in the comic.
And don't get me started on Odie. All of the animals in a Garfield movie should be CG.

You know, if this abomination does good then it's the end of the classic Garfield as we know it.
And if the movie does horribly, then it's going to take the classic Garfield down with it.
We are screwed either way you slice it.
And by the way, Wrenchien, who are you to tell us Garfield fans how to feel if you yourself hate the character? You have absolutely no idea.

Was it really that bad? It was so short, how could you tell Garfield was acting out of character? In fact, didn't Garfield do that exact Elvis inpersonation in one of his early (maybe his first) television specials? I was a kid when I saw it, so maybe I'm wrong. I'll admit the CG isn't fantastic, but it does look a lot like him. It's better than Scooby Doo was. I have faith in Bill Murray, so I will reserve judgement until I see the film, or at least a more in depth trailer.

Oh, and if Jim Davis "sold out", it was about twenty years ago when Garfield started appearing on every type of merchandise possible. So the fact that he is in a movie now isn't all that of a surprise, or a big deal really.
Making a Garfield movie is not the be all and end all for the Garfield franchise, this is what I am saying.
What are you afraid of? Little kids might see this and get the wrong idea about Garfield? Parents of kids young enough to be 'in danger' of that should be huge Garfield fans or know people who are - perhaps the people who go see the film are all very clued up about Garfield. He's a comic strip character, and that is where he shines. Not on whatever piece of merchandise his head is on, not because of his balloon/float that gets put in that parade you have in the US.
Imagine how many people decry the animated Garfield, he's got to be proactive to make that work, and he was - and it did!
The Looney Tunes Back in Action movie is similar to the point I'm trying make - it's a send-up and a parody of many things in our lives/culture, and we laugh at it because it's got Bugs Bunny and his mates doing the teasing. Not to mention some live actors not taking themselves seriously. It's not out to win awards or get Looney Tunes or Merry Melodies Revamped For the 00s put in primetime.
This Garfield movie is a celebration and a big pat on the back to Jim Davis - don't just see the movie, go on a spending spree for Garfield stuff, and get out all your old books of strips and LAUGH.

I'm a big Garfield fan and well, I actually liked the trailer. The thing is, that some trailers don't ususally say or mean anything to the movie. Take "Kangaroo Jack", I got dragged to see it, but the trailer made one believe that he would always be rapping. He was only doing it for 30 seconds. Perhaps that part of the trailer is when Odie goes missing and Garfield celebrates. And also, it's only one minute of scenes. It might be good, it might be bad, but I'll see it anyway. Just remember one simple thing. The fat, orange, sleeping, eating cat owns all.
Garfield's been around for far too long and too great for a 'new hip-speak' compliment like "owns all"!
And thanks Discloner, I found an unchecked box in my qt settings saying something about saving to hard drive when possible. D'oh.

Maybe I'm getting senile at my tender old age of 24, but what in the world is "owns" supposed to mean? Is this big in high schools now? I think it sounds really weird and is a ridiculous way of getting out of using adjectives, you know...real grammar.

i am someone who has been teased ALL his adult life, and his teenage life, and his kid's life about liking garfield in my own home town. people would like to get me mad deliberately by saying 'garfield's dead' when i knew it was wrong, to the point i'd get angry and mad. sometimes i'd even go and tell them not to by walking up to the cars they'd yell that 'garfield's dead' at me out of, and tell them not to, but they still kept doing it.
only when i'm at home or out of town do i feel safe noone's going to torture me about garfield just to see how angry i'll become.

Jeez, I'm sorry I asked.
Let me get this straight now...the ENTIRE TOWN teases you because you like Garfield and they know it makes you really angry. Right. There's one for Ripleys.
The last few years of strips have been terrible, but I'm still disgusted by this whole thing.
This movie just screamed awful from the start. It was obvious from the day they announced it. I love Garfield and I'm just mad that Jim Davis is selling him out like this.
Don't say "it could be good". Look at this trailer and look at every trailer for every bad movie that's been made this millenium so far. They're all the same. Use your common sense.
And don't say "if you don't like it, don't watch it". In a few months, they're going to start showing the same two commercials (and ridiculously shortened versions which are even worse) OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER on every network every twenty minutes until the movie bombs and everyone wonders why. This movie is everything wrong with the world of entertainment today. I'm not going to have a choice, I'm going to have to sit through it all.
Until a secret society forms bent on sneaking into studios and destroying all existing reels of every bad movie that's coming out, it's just going downhill from here. I'm sick of it.

It's just internet slang for something being great. I guess I should have just said that "classic Garfield is great". But it just seemed too dull to say.
Now as for the movie, I just hope that it will have some redeeming quality to it and not something just put together because of its name being popular (i.e. Cat in the Hat).

yeah... I think people are overreacting.
At l3east they're trying to use a story. The last few years of Garifled strips have just been having him and Jon do literally nothing... and it's been like this since 95-96 or so. It has Liz, so they have read the strips.
I still think, tho, that the best use of Garfield is the animated series. They took something that could have been licensed pap and made it one of the more clever and funny cartoons of the 80s and 90s, up there with Animaniacs and TTA, really. It's very underrated.
Also, Bill Murray... I have faith in him and I think he was a great choice for Garfield. Not my first choice... but then again, my first choice was Lorenzo Music, who WAS Garfield, and he passed away. (I'm still amazed at the job he did as Garfield, looking back at the cartoon.)
