yes reason why I am posting it in here

apparently now people are under the impression that Japanese games are superior to "other" games. Now examples of other games would br Ratchet and Clank, Jak and Daxter, Beyond G&E, Sphinx, basicly any national sports game, Prince of Peria....need I go on?

THE MADNESS MUST END DAMMIT!!!!!!!

You classiify games to genres not what did who and where...

No, it's the West with the inferiority complex.

Would I be pathetic if I played Jak II in Japanese w/subtitles and pretended it was an anime?

Good. 'Cause I didn't......but a friend of mine did. O_O

I will say that the majority of games I've enjoyed were Japanese-made games. But that's only because the majority of video games out there are made in Japan. :P And not all japanese video games look like anime. Gran Turismo anyone?

I really don't care if a game was made by U.S company or by a Japanese one. All I care about is the game being fun to play. Also is it just me or do companies think that if they can make a crappy game and have liscensed anime characters in them that it will sell, and appeal to most people. Dragonball Budokai 1 is perfectly good example. I liked it since i like the dbz series but looking at it from another stand point, the game completely [B]sucked.

Back in the day, that Japanese superiority complex probably would have been warranted. Up through the 16-bit days (with some very noticeable exceptions, thank you very much), pretty much all of the AAA games were Japan-born.

But the situation is VASTLY different today. Many American developers, such as Neversoft, Factor 5, and the various EA developers, are surpassing even the best Japanese efforts. And Retro Studios, a Texas (boo-yah!) developer, managed to make the best Metroid title yet.

Of course, Europe and Canada are also major players in the game development scene. Ubisoft Montreal (of Splinter Cell fame) has been cranking out some incredible stuff lately.

Hmm... Some of the western games, at least when i play them, have a Japanese feel. Hey, has anybody played Beyond Good and Evil? In your opinion is it good?

One of the best platformers out this season. I liked its original idea, but it was easier then Jak 2 though.

Also, one of the most underrated games of all time, Eternal Darkness, from a Canadian game development company.

I thought that Eternal Darkness was a successful game for gamecube.

It didn't sell all that much actually, mainly because most gamers didn't try to give it a real chance. Though, Denis Dyack did mention it would be considered successful, if you had compared it to an international film...Or whatever they are called. Correct me, if I'm wrong.

EDIT:

It's an independant film I was trying to mention.

Hmm... Thanks! I was having some doubts on if I should really buy it or not. I guess I will. But I have one more question and it's IS IT FUN?

it was fun in my opinion and I have played most of the platformers that were released this year. Go to gamespot for review from someone else.

cool, i did go to gamespot to read the reporters thoughts and when he said something about the game which i can't remember i started having some doubts. I'm thinking about getting BGE if they don't have Legacy of kain Defiance

There's not actually a lot of Japanese games this holiday season that I'm all that interested in, in fact (without the hop, Mario Kart: DD is dead to me). Most of the AAA product comes from American, European, or Canadian developers.

Such as:

-Beyond Good and Evil
-Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
-XIII
-Need For Speed: Underground
-Star Wars Rogue Squadron III: Rebel Strike
-Lord of the Rings: Return of the King

I guess those are the biggies, but there are others.

Very interesting statement. Most the games I enjoy and have are Japanese, but that's just because the Japanese make RPGs the way I like them, heavy on linear story, light on free-form exploration or character creation. Being my favorite genre, they are the games I'd actually buy instead of just renting.

If I ever really want to "make my own" character, I write a story about them and use my imagination.

Currently out of 22 PS2 games I own, 20 are from Japan. Not that I haven't played and enjoyed other games as well, but I can personally get more value from them. Although I do hope to get Prince of Persia this holiday season.

Actually, I'd say the Japanese DO have a superiority complex, looking at the generally poor performance of Western developed games over there. In fact, I think Ratchet & Clank has been the only Western made game to make a blip on the Japanese radar in quite some time.

And I think both Japanese and Western games kick ass...no real preference from me.

I find that, on average, the vast majority of console games that I like happen to be Japanese in origin. Actually, pretty much the only Western games on consoles that I like are GTA and the occasional Star Wars game. The rest are almost always either sports, racing, or platform games, which I don't really like. It has nothing to do with games being Japanese or Western in origin, it just happens that the type of console games I like are typically Japanese-made.

PC games are a completely different story, though.

I think that technology in Japan is way better and that's probably why they have really good games. But western games can be good too. I don't know if Max Payne is a western game but if it is then i gotta say, that game was awesome.

DonkeyKongSnes

it is a western game as far as i know. In my opinion western games tend to be more violent than japanese games

Ummm... no. I don't think there's a clear divide either way. Both the West and the East have some violent games. I mean, Japan created Resident Evil, which is as bloody and gory as anything else out there.

And I can't believe somebody would ask rather or not Max Payne is Western. Not to sound insulting, but can't you tell from the style?

What games did Japan develop for PC this year?
FF11 and......

It sounds like you probably aren't familiar with all the crap they release in a year that we never see on our shelves.

Americans make great games.

Earthworm Jim
GTA
Metroid Prime

Those three are enough to prove my point. They're all great and probably won't ever be forgotten.

Pretty much the only PC games that are made in Japan are console ports and hentai.

We're not perfect. Somehow I doubt ports of "Patriotic Pinball" and "Fugitive Hunter" are going to be seen in Japan.

Earthworm Jim was developed by Shiny Entertainment which is American.

Metroid Prime was developed by Retro Studios which is American.

GTA was developed by Rockstar North which I think is located in Scotland.
