Liquor heir and former MCA-Universal owner Edgar Bronfman is buying Warner Bros. music division (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=530&e=3&u=/ap/20031124/ap_on_bi_ge/warner_music) for $2.6 billion, it was announced today.

The connection to the cartoon division's history, of course, is they were first created to support Warners' music publishing division 73 years ago. The connection to any future cartoons is that pending federal approval, Warners won't own any of the songs you hear on the cartoons, along with thousands of other songs, which means don't expect to hear any faux-Stalling stuff in any future cartoons. Warners won't even pay to license "The Merry-Go-Round Broke Down" as it is, so any future efforts will be in the Terrytoons-Phillip Scheib never use a copyrighted song style, so no royalties have to be paid out.

On the other hand, they are getting rid of a chunk of debt created when they found out AOL had been jiggling its profit numbers. Thanks, AOL!

Does this mean that WB will no longer be able to release things like "The Carl Stalling Project" and "That's All Folks?"

Well, they'd be able to produce them, but if they don't have a record label anymore, then they'd have to pitch them to a label.

Warner will probably get a loss less income due to this. The royalties from Happy Birthday to You alone are pretty big.
