DRAGON BALL Z Leads Cartoon Network to Best-Ever September
Total Day Ratings and Delivery Among Key Demos
Network Also Ties for First Place in Total Day Ratings for the Week
of Sept. 24-30
Cartoon Network concluded September 2001 with its highest-ever
September total day ratings and delivery of key demographics,
primarily because of the outstanding performance of DRAGON BALL Z, anchor of the network's popular afternoon action-adventure franchise, Toonami. In fact, the Wednesday, Sept. 26, telecast of DRAGON BALL Z at 6 p.m. earned a 3.5 household rating and delivered 2,733,000 homes, making it the most-watched telecast in Cartoon Network history in terms of delivery and the second-highest rated telecast ever. With the strength of DRAGON BALL Z, Cartoon Network also captured first place in total day household ratings for the week of Sept. 24-30 (tied with CNN, Nickelodeon and Lifetime), with five telecasts ranking among the top 10 basic cable programs for the week. Overall, total day ratings and delivery of key demographics grew by double digits, while households earned their highest delivery ever. Cartoon Network wrapped up September 2001 in fourth place among ad-supported cable networks, with a 1.1 total day household rating.

The network finished the week of Sept. 24-30 with a similar 1.6 household rating, also earning fifth place among ad-supported cable networks. For Third Quarter 2001, Cartoon Network finished in third place among all ad-supported cable networks, with a 1.2 total day household rating. Compared to Third Quarter 2000, household rating was unchanged while ratings for key demographics all improved.

Highlights of the third quarter include the Aug. 10, 7 p.m. premiere of Cartoon Network's original action-adventure series, Samurai Jack, which scored a 1.7 household rating and delivered 1,252,000 households. Adult 18-34 ratings posted significant gains vs. the previous year, up 167 percent, from 0.3 to 0.8, and delivery jumped 144 percent to 347,000 viewers. The July 4 Ed-dependence Day marathon (8 a.m. - 5 p.m.) averaged a 1.7 household rating, up 21 percent vs. the same time period last year. A total of 8,900,000 different viewers tuned in to the marathon.
