Well, the word is in (http://newsarama.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=6426). The successors of the BATMAN book after Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso's excellent Broken City storyline will be
Judd Winick & Tom Nguyen
Is DC Comics making a conscience effort to destroy what will have been there very hottest title for 18 solid issues?
With Azzarello and Lee on SUPERMAN at the same time as Winick and Nguyen will be on BATMAN, it will be the first time in a very long time that SUPERMAN will outsell BATMAN... and it will do so by dozens upon dozens of issues.

I'm not one for bashing creators most of the time, so if this comes off as such, so be it. I'm sure as heck not the first to bash the man.
But, honestly, how many books does Winick write now? Does DC just want to have the man write every single book they have? I guess I can't complain, since I read most of them (although most of them are because I love the character (Green Lantern, Arrow, etc)). But, it just seems that his name has been places with darn near every DC book in the past year plus. Not just rumored, but factually writing them.
Besides, what ever came of the second run of Lee/Loeb (sp?)? I thought they signed up to do another, like, 4 issues or something at some point after the "Hush" arc?

What about having one artist and one writer with a consistant vision of Batman stick around indefinitely instead of these overhyped rotating writer-artist teams? Then again DC haven't handled Batman right since Denny O'Neil took over as Editor of the Batman titles.

I agree with Senor Intensity, they really need a writer and artist to work on the book for a while, get a couple of good arcs in.

I voted the last option. I know who Winick is, but I've never read his work. And as for Nguyen, ummm... I'd never heard of him until now. But I did click the link and saw some of his work, looks pretty nice. So officially, the jury's still out on this one.

Winick and Batman.
I get an icky feeling of what stories may come..

From Wizard #145:
Judd [Winick] was the first person I successfully signed, so he was extremely important in terms of getting the ball rolling," reveals DiDio. "He was one of a number of writers who were working at DC and Marvel simultaneously. I liked what he was doing at both companies, and I decided that if we could bring him in-house, he could really help push our product forward. So I had a nice long talk with him, and I think I was able to sign him for an exclusive mainly because he was looking to buy a house! [Laughs] And steady income is definitely something that helps when you're trying to secure a loan."
So we've so much of Winick since he was the first DiDio signed for an exclusive... and because he bought a house. O_o

I thought they were going to do their six-issue Hush aftermath after Azzarello/Risso, but I guess they are delaying it since Azzarello and Lee are going to do Superman.

While Winnick did what I found to be overall decent work on GL, his Batman ain't high on my list. So after Azzarello and Risso, I'm ditching BATMAN 'til they get their crap together.
As for the second Loeb/Lee arc, that was cancelled after Lee signed on to do SUPERMAN.

I'm on a "wait-for-the-trade" status with this book - because that's what it seems to be being written for at the moment, with so many short runs. By the time the trade is out as well, I can tell if it's worth it or not (Hush wouldn't be if it weren't for the art). Winick is going wonderfully on Green Arrow, which I thoroughly enjoy. I haven't read much of his other stuff, but I think he'll do an okay job. If not, well, he's only there for five issues.
So, overall, I agree that a strong ongoing team needs to be found. I'd really, really love to see Brian K. Vaughn take hold of this title, with Patrick Zircher on pencils, or Cully Hamner.

I have every single issue of Batman from #300 to present with the exception of one hole in that collection: the Larry Hama run. It hurt to skip those issues - the completist in me was screaming the whole time - but his writing was so atrocious that I just couldn't justify spending the money to purchase those issues. Looks like I'll now have another hole in my collection - the five issue run of Winnick. What a terrible, terrible idea to put this man on this title. I can't stand him or his writing, and I refuse to purchase the title while he's on it. :(

OK, I think we all know where I stand on Judd. I found that his early work on GL was OK, but the longer he went on the title the more it became the REAL WORLD Green Lantern.
Green Arrow has become more of the same. His characterization of Ollie just seems off to me. The way Ollie so easily has endangered his relationship with Dinah is way off base.
Now, on the plus side, Outsiders has been OK up till now. Not great, but by far the best work I've seen him do in a very long time.............
But Batman, BATMAN!!!! They are going to let him play in Gotham???? Please, it cannot be so. I , as well, shudder at what the future holds for the Dark Knight Detective. Judd has a major failing. He falls back on what he knows best, and what he knows best is what his life experience. Thats understandable. Writers have to fall back on what they have lived to a certain extent. But Judd's failing is that he always seems to fall back on his "Real World" history. Which makes his stories repetitive in the extreme.
DC has had an incredible win streak with a lot of it's titles in the last year. But the way Batman is going, well it makes me shudder. Time to get ONE creative team on the title and let them go with it for a year or more.

Azzarello is enough reason to take Batman off my pull list. Winick is plenty enough reason to keep it off my pull list.
Thank god for Batman Adventures.

Hmmm, does this mean we just figured out who our two "0" votes were on the Batman #620 talkback thread?
