View Full Version : Favorite Power Puff Girl Episodes

(This being a follow-up to the 'Favorite Dexter's Lab Eps' thread.)
My most-appreciated PPG episodes, in no particular order, are:
'Down and Dirty' (now we know what it takes to make Buttercup come clean)
'Bubblevicious' (new look for her!)
'Mr. Mojo Rising' (an Origin Story with a twist)
'Three Girls And A Monster' (laughed aloud at the resolution!)
'Power Prof' (aka 'When Lame Dialogue Attacks')
'Get Back Jojo' (loved those flashback revelations, and that minimalist-artwork sequence)
'Equal Fights' (the one with Femme Fatale; a lesson on the difference between feminism & demagoguery)
'Film Flam' (it tickles me to death to see the Prof in drag, plus there's a few on-target in-jokes)
'Criss Cross Crisis' (do I need to say more?)
And, easily my favorite ep:
'Meet The Beat-Alls' (anybody who knows anything about the Beatle's history will understand why this one had me rolling on the floor for an extended period)

*The Rowdy Ruff Boys. Who would have ever known toilet water could be used as a subsitute for chemical X (maybe they served chili that night in Townsville Prison).
*The full half-hour short in which the Prof gets all worried about the girls' safety and builds them a fighting robot, which they use to battle a giant blowfish...and, ironically, trash the blazes out of Townsville as they save it.
*Anything with Sedusa is great; it's a pity she's only appeared twice so far.
*The short in which, ironically, Fuzzy Lumpkin, Him, and Mojo Jojo save the day, and not the Girls (and the Gangrene Gang learns that making prank phone calls is bad).
*The short in which the PPGs somehow break the time-space continuum by pulling a Flash and find themselves in the future, where everyone they know is old and decrepit and Him is a god.
*The short with the undead magician. He was cool and gross at the same time. How did Blossom get out of the iron maiden?

I really like all the PPG episodes, but the first one that came to mind when I saw this question posted was the one where they were stranded inside on a rainy day. That episode made me laugh so hard, but I don't think it would be the best episode to introduce somebody to the series.
I also liked Dream Scheme....some cool animation in that one. Truly an unique episode in the series.
Bubblevicious-I like the rough stuff too! There is something slightly suggestive with that plush Bubbles toy that says that phrase when you squeeze her, and the same thing with the Buttercup toy that says, "All the fun stuff happens at night!"
Mime for a Change-I love that song they sing in there!
There are many others, but those are the ones that stick out in my mind the most right now.

Uh Oh Dynamo was one (I love the whole Mech thing, and you can even see Dexter.)
Rowdy Ruff Boys: Interesting resolution, and the fight scenes where very DBZ, (same with the first Princess ep.)
The one with the imaginary freind. (Bubbles and that new kid had something going on with them.)
Power Prof: LOL.
Meet the Beatals: I wanna hold your cash.
There are probably more, but I can't remember them.

I've thought of another ep to ad to my favorites list: 'Slumbering With The Enemy.'
Actually, *any* ep which gives Mojo Jojo a lot of screen time is liable to be one I enjoy. The script-writers often give him great lines, and Roger L. Jackson does *such* a good job reading them. :)

My personal opinions for now, (in no particular order) ...
Bubblesvicious - prolly the all-time classic.
The Powerpuff Girls Best Rainy Day Adventure Ever ... just goes to show what would happen if there were no crime/villians. So they really do appreciate what Mojo does all the time ...
Los Dos Mojos ... yes, there really isn't enough room for 2 Mojo's ...
Mr. Mojo's Rising ... he's not only the girls' enemy, he's also their brother and their father!
Stray Bullet ... no spoilers ... it hasn't been aired yet.
There are others ... these just came to mind first.
BTW, re: the subject, "Powerpuff" - one word.
-- Kane ... who is also whining about a lack of regular adult PPG shirts.

> BTW, re: the subject, "Powerpuff" - one word. <
It is? Then how come it's always abbreviated 'PPG'?
(Actually I think I know. It's because 'PG' is a movie rating.)
And yes, the 'Best Rainy Day Adventure' ep is certainly a good one. Prof playing Bubbles (because nobody else wants to, *sniff*), is another one of those images that manages to make me laugh no matter how many times I see it.
At this rate, I'm gonna end up with a *really* long list.

"Monkey See, Doggie Do" was a good one (the PPG's were simply adorable as puppies!)...though I never quite got why they recycled that footage and dialogue almost exactly in another short. That one is worthy to note only because Mojo, in the back of the dogcatcher's truck, gets a come-hither look from a male dog--implying he's about to get--ahem--dominated.
Of course I couldn't forget the highly suggestive and violent (one of the few times the Girls ever show Mojo pity!) "Candy is Dandy"...although the other short, "Catastrophe", was very forgettable. The monster was just a big green booger version of Elmyra...and why didn't his cat get hurt when the creature exploded all over Townsville like a weiner in a microwave?
BTW, "Dream Scheme" wasn't the only one in which the Girls learn a lesson about stealing...there was also one with Bubbles and a set of golf clubs (a crime which she tried to pin on Mojo). The moral there is that even heroes aren't always perfect.

> BTW, "Dream Scheme" wasn't the only one in which the Girls learn a lesson about stealing...there was also one with Bubbles and a set of golf clubs... <
Small correction: that was Blossom who swiped the golf clubs. And ended up getting sentenced to doing community service for it.
You'd think the powers-that-be would've taken advantage of her ability to do something more useful for Townsville than trash pick-up.
But, what can you expect from a city government with *that* for a mayor?
"Heaven help us if anythin' should ever happen to yer dialing finger."

My top three favorites:
1. Down and Dirty
2. Mojo Rising
3. Bubblevicious
I've missed a lot of the recent eps, so these are subject to change! ;)

Blame it on the budget! I mean, look at "The Bare Facts" ... they shaved THOUSANDS off the animation for that ep! :)
But on a lighter (and factual note), Craig McCracken mentioned that it was a test to see how far the fans would stick around to see what, if anything, was different. Apparently, us fans would stick around all the way to the end.

Man, too many good eps. I just want to add a few more to the list:
"The Mane Event", "Paste Makes Waste", and "Bubblevision" each give great and funny moments to an individual girl. "Super Zeroes" offers us Liberty Belle, Harmony Bunny, and Mange, and why they're not very good. And I plunked down the money to see "Helter Shelter" early, and it is fantastic! Bubbles and a baby whale, haw haw!

Stuck Up, Up, and Away- because I like that battle part of the episode, kind of a Dragonball Z like battle.
Power Lunch- Because the ending was so funny when the radioactive lunch that the Gangreen Gang had just went down the drain (number 2:p ).
Los Dos Mojos- Because It was so funny when Bubbles thinks she's Mojo Jojo, and the ending was funny that they saying Mojo Jojo's name a number of times, and it get on the Narrator's nerves.
The Rowdyruff Boys- Because it was the best when Mojo Jojo created the Rowdyruff Boys with toilet water as a chemical X subsitute. (it kind of remind me of the battle between the Power Rangers and the Shadow Rangers):D

Him, Princess, the Gangreene Gang, Mojo, and, oh, for sanity's sake, a "normal" person, put them through a psychotherapy session.
"What do we want to take control of?"
"The WORLD!"
"No - our feelings."
Eh, something along the lines of that. They run it every so often, so you should be bound to catch it some day.

They've been running two-hour blocks during primetime, and i've been seeing a lot of my favorites. Unfortunately I missed Monday night's shows because It ran on Lifetime...but I watched Tuesday and Wednesday. Last night they ran another of my favorites, "Jewel of the Aisle", with their spot-on takeoffs of bad CGI shows and ridiculous cereal commercials ("Ridiculous Lucky Captain Rabbit King--Lucky Captain Rabbit King Nuggets are for the youth!") Plus it was three dodgy episodes practically back-to-back--the "Monkey See, Monkey Do" remake and "Candy is Dandy", as well as this exchange from "Hot-Air Buffoon":the Mayor, incensed at a cleaning woman's assertion that he's useless, tells Ms. Bellum that it's time to seize the helm. He makes a sort of side to side gesture in front of him with his hands as he says this. Bellum says, "Um...do you want me to step outside for that?"http://cwm.ragesofsanity.com/otn/evil/evil_lol.gif
Tonight is a treat--"Meat the Beat-Alls" will be shown, as well as "Equal Fights" and "Film Flam". http://cwm.ragesofsanity.com/otn/party/party.gif

I just realized I haven't weighed in yet.
Bubblevicious, Down and Dirty, Mojo Rising, Los Dos Mojos... all excellent.
Super Zeroes I just saw again tonight. The bizarre Japanese comic, and Mange's cool powers but utter uselessnes... "It's too bright, I'll sit this one out." Good stuff. And the rainy day adventure... oh my yes.
As for ones that haven't been mentioned, I dig "Just Another Manic Mojo," in which we follow Mojo as he has a bad day. Just the way he draws out "curses".... hee hee.
Also the one where the Amoeba boys, in their attempts to be decent villains, accidentally get everyone sick, yet insist on a fight with the PPG (who are sick as dogs) anyway... oh, that was a hoot.
Helter Shelter and Power Lunch are both excellent, they're great excuses to rent the latest videos and DVD. (hint to people who haven't seen them) I wonder when they'll be put on TV rotation...

Craig McCracken once said at GIRLCHAT that "Helter Shelter"/"Power Lunch" would ultimately be shown on CN, but for now are only available in the US on the recent videotapes. That episode is in rotation in Canada and Europe.
I forgot how good "Equal Fights" was. I expected a disaster and was thrilled at how well written it was. It came out at the same time a TV Guide reviewer dismissed the show as male chauvinist. All of us wondered if she had actually watched this episode (supposedly she had) or made a decision based on the promos and toy ads. TV Guide almost printed my letter. I was this close to being in every home in America.

I don't think they're on VHS - just the DVD (The Mane Event). They ought to be showing it soon, as it's a 3rd season episode, whereas Film Flam is already a 4th season ep.
All of 4th season are 22-minute eps, BTW.

Hm, I got a different impression. The last two videos that were released each contain half the episodes on The Mane Event DVD, and I was pretty sure one of the unreleased ones were on each. I think one of the videos features Twisted Sister (Bunny!), but I can't remember the other one.

--if a male discriminates against women, he's a chauvenist. If a woman discriminates against men, she's...what? Is there a term for her that doesn't involves references to female canines and crude slang for her private parts?
Femme Fatale was an excellent take on the disturbing "angry" trend the feminist movement took in the mid-seventies that still seems to pollute the minds of younger women today (though the older ones seem to have thankfully outgrown it).
I've been saying for years that today's women either don't know what they want or do but are just too shy to admit it...although those that do and aren't get frighteningly specific. I once read a thread on circumscision on another MB that left me chilled. I had no idea so many women preferred a man whose captain still wears his cap to dinner, if you catch my drift.... :eek:http://cwm.ragesofsanity.com/otn/shocked/blush.gif

I have both VHS tapes. They're on there.
Narfcake - yes!
Belchie - the precise term would be a female chauvinist. "Chauvinist" derives from a man named Chauvin who was rabidly pro-Bonaparte. The word is now used for any fanatic. Feminists don't hate all the chauvinists, they just start with the Male Chauvinist Pigs™.
Sharklady - I can't remember exactly what she said. GIRLCHAT changed ISPs and PPGWorld is apparently gone for good, so the archives for both are now lost. I've attached the mail I sent so you can have a clue. Stewart said something to the effect that they were whiny and submissive and called it a Barbie cartoon, all image and no substance.
Susan Stewart's rating of "The Powerpuff Girls" at only 3 on a scale of 10 disturbs me. I can accept Ms. Stewart's difference of opinion about the quality of "PPG", but her judgment of its social impact is gravely mistaken. "PPG" presents not one, not two, but three well-developed female characters. Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup have unique, strong personalities that neither apologize for their femininity nor rely on stereotypical weaknesses. As a feminist, I find "PPG" a refreshing break in the masculine world of cartoons and television in general. This series shows both girls and boys three liberated females in an understated fashion that teaches without calling attention to the lesson. "PPG" deserves better than a 3.
Ms. Stewart's commentary is further damaged by its tardiness; "PPG" has been a highly successful series since its debut more than two years ago. Your review of this major television phenomenon should have come sooner than towards the end of the third season. This oversight in your coverage of family programming only serves to remind me why I have never subscribed to "TV Guide", and your poor review reminds me why I never will.
Sincerely,
James Reinbold

There's *some* advantage to having a few years behind you.
Most of us, as young girls, go thru a time when we feel convinced "All Boys Are SLIME!"*
What I really like about the 'Equal Fights' ep is the way it acknowledges this attitude, and gently gives the girl viewers a nudge towards a more mature outlook.
"So once again, the day is saved, thanks to... the PPG writers! (I hope they win an Emmy for this ep...)"
* I have reason to suspect most young boys experience a phase of similar hostility towards the girls, but of course I can't speak first-hand about that.

I have all 3 of the PPG DVDs - love 'em.
Due to a lack of cable, I've only seen 1 and a half seasons of the show (and those eps on the DVDs). But these are my favorites of those I've seen to date (in no certain order):
Beat Your Greens
The scene where kids attack and defeat the Broccoloids by eating them is just hysterical to me (I love Jeff Bennett's impression of David Warner as the leader of the Broccoloids too.) I especially love the Broccoloid leader's line, "Barbarians!" This ep has one of the funniest endings for a cartoon that I've ever seen - the kids attacking the produce isle and devouring the veggies.
Birthday Bash
I love the banter between the villains in prison, and Him's delight in giving the people tooth decay as a way to destroy the PPGs.
Boogie Frights
I love the animation for The Boogie Man's wriggling hips, and the voices are great in this one. I crack up every time at the lines "My Grand Master Plan", and where Boogie sings "Make this night last forever!". Star Wars refs are a hoot too.
Collect Her
You can't be a toy collector and not love this one.
Impeach Fuzz
Fuzzy Lumpkins' simplicity (along with Jim Cummings' voice) makes him one of my fave characters on the show. This ep always cracks me up, and I love the Mayor's line "Let's get it on."
Just Another Manic Mojo
My favorite ep so far. A day in the life of Mojo Jojo - what could be funnier? (So far, every ep with Mojo has been a fave of mine.)
Major Man
I think I like this one mostly because of Major Man's theme song.
Mojo Rising
Great origin story, nice twist at the end.
Powerpuff Bluff
Those giant fake PPG heads with the men's voices coming out of them is powerfully funny to me. And I love how they aren't able to tell the differences between each other, even though it's so obvious to the viewers.
Supper Villain
Again, a very funny performance from Jeff Bennett - it's what carries this ep. Fave line: "Eat your pea, professor."
Telephonies
Outrageously funny to me. Favorite lines: "BIRTHDAY SUIT!" -- Fuzzy; "I was reading the papah!" -- Mojo
Slumbering With The Enemy
Another great Mojo ep. Mojo's DVD commentary's a laff riot.
Twisted Sister
This ep has one of the cutest moments in a PPG ep I've seen to date - where all 3 girls bounce on the floor saying "Bunny! Bunny! Bunny!" Christine Cavanaugh's performance as Bunny is award-worthy.
Something's a Ms
Very funny subtleties in this one - one of the "sexiest" TV cartoons I've ever seen. Fave line: "That woman is so fired." --The Mayor
Crime 101
One of the original PPG shorts and still one of the funniest, IMO. I love Chuck McCann's voices for the Amoeba Boys. Great spin with the PPGs teaching the Amoeba boys how to commit crimes, and a very funny ending with the PPGs going to prison for it.

There really aren't any bad PPG cartoons, so It's hard to pick the best.

I didn't seem to "get" anything. It gave me all these options to "purchase" CToons with the points I had, but any ones that interested me all said "sold out". I don't remember seeing any of the ones you mentioned available.
You'll have to find out where the codes are on the DVD before I can give them to you. I only have the one listed under the DVD-Rom features for the disc. I'll e-mail that one too you since I don't think I'll be an active participant in the Cartoon Obit thing. Interesting concept though.

It was a good short, but I've mentioned before that the ending felt so abrupt--I mean, the Girls lost their powers and it's never explained how they got them back. It's been suggested the professor keeps spare Chemical X on hand for emergencies (someone even suggested in the form of popsicles, which makes one wonder if there isn't a story in that someplace). Also, Mojo seems capable, as evident in "Mojo Jonesin' " and "Mo Job", of manufacturing the stuff, though he never takes a dose of it himself. So it must not be a hard formula to duplicate (at least for a chimpanzee with a brain several times normal size).

Favorite episodes of PPG? Hmm.... good question. It's hard to remember them all, and I'll probably leave some out unintentionally, but here goes:
Monkey See, Doggie Do (not the sequel - cheaters!! :p )
Buttercrush (my favorite moments are the two extremes: Buttercup handing Ace a soda, then later on beating the crap out of him! Hell hath no fury like that of...Buttercup PO'd!)
PowerProf. (The first half of this episode is really adorable - I found myself saying "awww" almost every minute)
Slumbering With the Enemy (Mojeesha - need I say more?)
Stuck Up, Up, and Away (It was fun pointing out all the DBZ references)
Mime for a Change (found an mp3 of the song they sing in this one! hurray!)
Bubblevicious (I like any episode where Bubbles gets a lot of air time - and hearing her scream "Who else wants some?!" is hilarious!)
Boogie Frights (love the Star Wars refs and the whole idea of eclipsing the sun with a disco ball)
The RowdyRuff Boys (no reason for this one, I just do :) )
Mommy Fearest (Sedusa had a pretty good plan there...)
the episode where Mojo Jojo wound up babysitting the girls (who knew he was also an Iron Chef wanna-be? :D)
And finally, the episode where the girls and the kids of Townsville defeat the Broccoloid empire :) Oh yes, and those two goats helped too.
Whew!

I really love episodes that play with a series' conventions, so three of my very favorites have to be "Bare Facts" (different animation styles) ". . .Best Rainy Day Adventure" (characters playing themselves) and "Super Zeroes" (characters playing other super heroes).
More conventional faves:
"A Very Special Blossom": That's the one where Blossom steals the golf clubs for the professor. I love the title (a riff on NBC's Blossom, which seemed to always have "very special episodes") and the way it manages to both impart a moral message and at the same satirize it. Never seen that done quite so arfully before.
"Supper Villain": That poor man and his hideous family.
"Jewel of the Aisle": Great parody of TV commercials.
"Meet the Beat-Alls": Attains a Rocky-and-Bullwinkle sublimeness of punnery.
Singin' Stray Cat

Super Zeroes! I knew I'd forget one or two.

PPG is a very good cartoon, despite the artwork. There may be about one "bad" episode. By bad I mean least enjoyable.
My favorites are:
Stuck Up, Up and Away - Forget about it. It has action. It has comedy. It has DBZ references up the bunghole. Did I mention the action? I've never seen the girls fight so hard. Amazing!
Favorite Quote: "Oh, yeah? Tell that to Batman!"
Best Rainy Day Adventure Ever (I think that's the title)- It's a great episode for people who already know and love all the characters. The girls' impressions of the other characters are hilarious!
Favorite Quote: " Since I have yet to meet a greater scientific mind this side of the galaxy, I can comfortably say that sentence comfortably."
The RowdyRuff Boys - The mirror match to end all mirror matches! I love watching everyone's special attacks. My only complaint is with the ending. This episode would've been great if is had two parts, the first part ending with Townsville thinking the girls are dead. I hated the "Reviving Tears" thing in the first Pokemon movie.
Favorite Quote: "Ok, girls! Let's get 'em. "
-------That's all I have for y'all right now. I just want to take this time to say hello to everyone in the toonzone.net family. There are so many smart, friendly people here.
KIDDIESUNSHINE!!! SPREADING THE WORD OF PEACE AND LOVE THROUGHOUT THE NATION! Kinda.

My fav (of what little I've seen) is the short where a feminine enemy seduces Pro. Plutonium in disguise. Classic; seeing Pro. go "I, I, I..." was the best part of that eppy...
....I wish I coulda seen the RowdyRuff Boy eppy, though. Always sounded like a good one...

That would be "Mommy Fearest." :D Yup, that Professor is one smooth operator all right.

Also has Buttercup surreptitiously tucking something into the Professor's lapel pocket before his big date. . . .;)

Okay, here are my favorites.
Powerpuff Girl's best Rainy day adventure ever: I loved this one, the begining was a little...err... stupid, but it ended up great.
Jewel of the Aisle: Ridiculous Lucky Captain... err... well, those Mechanimals were cool! o^.^o;;
Super Zeroes: This is my absolute favorite. 'Nuff said.

Here's where I put in my 34 cents:
1) "Cat Man Do"--The one where Prof. Utonium gets hypnotized by Kitty and forced to do his bidding.
I liked the parts where Kitty and the Prof. luged past the laser security system, and the Professor's rescue at the end when he leaped off the building to rescue Kitty.
2) "Meet the Beat-Alls"--Favorite scene: When the bad guys beat up the cartoon Beatles (somewhere up in Cartoon Heaven, The Impossibles must be laughing). Loved all the Beatles references, too!
3) "Major Competition": "Major Man"--What a jerk!
4) "Mime for a Change"
5) "PowerProf."
"The best episode of any show is the one that lives in your imagination"...and I've got one or two good PPG stories locked up in mine!
