As bit player, comedian, George at 66 is still going strong. Does anyone on this board like his work?

When he's off-kilter or non-sequitor, he's damn funny. It's when he tries to have a point that hurts his talent.

I like George, always found him funny. For some reason his observational humor stands out compared to that of others. One of my favorite bits he does is the one about airlines...very funny stuff.

I like the good Mr. Carlin's older stuff. It seems (to me, anyway) that the older he gets, the more cynical and less funny he is. Still good, though.

I think he's still going strong. Even the new stuff is good.

And here's another group that should be shot...

Guys named Todd!

"When I lost something my mother would always say, well it didn't just get up and walk away.... once I lost my cat."

I love Carlin to death, he is one of the funniest and smartest comedians ever. It's funny though in real life he is a really nice and sensitive person I have this thing he wrote after his wife died hanging on my wall, it is very well written.

"I'm worried about cancer, I had broccoli for lunch." That is classic.

that's supposed to be "I'm NOT worried about cancer, I had broccoli for lunch". :)

i love when he says "as a matter of fact, you should take some broccoli to your doctor, he's probably got cancer too... probably got it from you!"

for anyone who has launchcast, they carry an album or two of carlin's work. if you don't have too many ranks yet, tho, don't rank him too high or you'll get sick of him very quickly  ... like, 5 times a day quickly

He's a funny comedian, but his sitcom sucked. Anybody else remember "The George Carlin Show"? How many years ago was that? 8? 10?

Carlin's HBO special "You Are All Diseased" was really funny. Other than that, the only stand-up I've seen of George Carlin has been old clips on best-of shows. But from what I've seen, he's hilarious.

I don't like George Carlin, really to me he is good for a few chuckles but I prefer Dennis Leary much much more.

However, my girlfriend loves George Carlin having many videos of his performances and always trying to see him live when she gets the chance. The parents of a friend named her Carlin after the comedian and she ended up liking him quite a bit too.

George Carlin has a lot of funny things to say. I haven't seen him much, but what I have seen is quite hilarious. However, his attitude towards certain things, especially religion (I'm a Christian), do make me feel uneasy. I prefer the humor style of Eddie Izzard over Carlin's.

His attitude toward religion makes me roll my eyes and say "but it's not really like that if you actually go by the Bible and not by denominational dogmas!"

"We watch too much tv and pray to seldom."
Carlin wrote that, remember not everything in his acts is to be taken completly seriously. He is an athiest, but he was raised a Christan, Catholic I believe, but he doesn't run around burning churches and saying God sucks.

Well, an atheist saying that God sucks would be pretty laughable, wouldn't it?

What he DOES do in his standup routines is mock the idea that God exists, and I can certainly understand why that would offend a lot of people, even those who aren't necessarily your stereotypical hardcore "censor everyone who doesn't agree with me" right-wing Christians.

I myself, on the other hand, merely find those portions of his acts unfunny-- too much rhetoric, not enough comedy-- but I still very much enjoy a lot of his other bits. Especially the one about his idea for turning Four Corners USA into a penal colony. (-:

He is an athiest, but he was raised a Christan, Catholic I believe, but he doesn't run around burning churches and saying God sucks.Carlin did not write that. It's part of an essay that was forwarded all over the internet with his name on it, but was actually written by Dr. Bob Moorehead, former pastor of Seattle's Overlake Christian Church. Here's what Carlin said about it on his website:

"PARADOX OF OUR TIME"
One of the more embarrassing items making the internet/e-mail rounds is a sappy load of **** called "The Paradox of Our Time." The main problem I have with it is that as true as some of the expressed sentiments may be, who really gives a ****? Certainly not me.

I figured out years ago that the human species is totally ****ed and has been for a long time. I also know that the sick, media-consumer culture in America continues to make this so-called problem worse. But the trick, folks, is not to give a ****. Like me. I really don't care. I stopped worrying about all this temporal ******** a long time ago. It's meaningless. (See the preface of "Braindroppings.")

Another problem I have with "Paradox" is that the ideas are all expressed in a sort of pseudo-spiritual, New-Age-y, "Gee-whiz-can't-we-do-better-than-this" tone of voice. It's not only bad prose and poetry, it's weak philosophy. I hope I never sound like that.Read all about it here (http://www.snopes.com/politics/soapbox/paradox.asp).

His old stuff, after like lets say, the Ed Sullivan show were vulgar, but goofy. He had the goofy Carlin in him. A few years later, around the "What am I Doin' in New Jersey?" time, he was getting more political, little more sexual, but still the goofy 47 year old he was. Everything from about "Parental Advisory: Explicit Lyrics" on, it got much more sexual, a bit more political at times, and age showing the holes. He is not that goofy anymore.

Possibly ten, since it came on back when Fox's popular shows were Married...With Children, The Simpsons, Herman's Head, and Get A Life. And I liked his sitcom. The only thing I didn't like was the fact that:

a) it was on Fox. Considering his humor, it should have been on cable.
b) it didn't last long on Fox, which proves that network TV wouldn't know real comedy if it bit them in the...ah, you know.

And what about when he replaced Ringo Starr on this kids show called "Shining Time Station"? That's when he sucked, IMO. Does anyone remember that show except for me. God, I'm old.

Does anyone know where I can find anything by George Carlin?

Yeah, though he should have died 3 times. All due to nasty heart attacks. His most recent was in 1991.
