Why is it that caricatures of C.C. (Cab Calloway) are acceptable to be seen in toons like HAVE YOU GOT ANY CASTLES? and SWOONER CROONER, where as his appearances in SEPTEMBER IN THE RAIN,WHOLLY SMOKE (among others) are not?

In "Wholly Smoke" I think the problem is that a white pipe cleaner can stick its head into a pipe, pull out all that residue tar and nicotine and turn into a black pipe cleaner. Not a real good reason, but given the anti-smoking attitudes of today, that's probably the reason (even though Tashlin's cartoon itself is anti-smoking and was done before any of the blue-noses and CN or in Burbank were likely born.)
The problem from "September in the Rain" is likely not Cab, but the other charactures that are part of the scene. In "Porky at the Crockadero," Tashlin muted the stereotypical designs of the other black band members enough in the orginal animation that it (for now) seems to also be getting past the political correctness police.
