I thought I'd share this link for anyone who's willing to take a chance...

Just curious: how many out there collect cartoons in other-than-VHS/DVD format? If you do, how do you transfer from film to VHS, etc?

Regards,
Jeff

There are several companies that are willing to do it cheaply... But if you're getting charged more than $100 for 1 hour of film to be transferred, you're being ripped-off. I know Larry T is probably more learned in this subject then I am.

LooneyThad, do you have any company names? I wouldn't know where to begin looking at this sort of thing.

Thanks,
Jeff

Check your local yellow pages under "Video Transfer". The term is telecine, if want to do an online search.

I pay $50 per 'toon to get film cleaned, lubed, any splices checked, then run through the equipment

of course you could buy one of these:

If you want a cheap transfer, probably the best way is to set up a projector and video camera side by side. Align the video camera so that the projector's image fills the TV screen. Then, simply run the film through the projector and record the video camera image onto VHS!

Note: Make sure you connect the projector's sound output directly to the VCR's sound input, rather than using the camera microphone - unless you want it to sound like those pirate copies of theater movies!

I have a PD tape of Felix the Cat and other cartoons, which look like they were transferred from 8mm prints in this way. The quality's terrible!

Telecine is always the best option, but also the most expensive. Unless you happen to have a telecine machine at home!
