View Full Version : How Much Has Cartoon Network Changed?

Hey, folks!
Some of you have been watching Cartoon Network since it first came out in 1990 or so. Prithee, when they originally aired WB cartoons, were they indeed uncut? All of them? Did they only decide to edit them later? As Candy has stated, and as is evident on Jon's Censored Cartoon Page, CN later inserted cut scenes back into cartoons, like Porky's attempt at multiculturalism in "Dog Collared", and Daffy's Pocahantas scene in "Boobs In The Woods". The way I interpret your comments regarding CN, I presume that Cartoon Network was an iron-strong beam of raw nerve at the beginning, got shot in the chest by AOL, and then slowly lost nerve in cripling droplets, from the painful wound forced upon them. If so, then how far has the mighty fallen? I've noticed that they used to air all sorts of great cartoons they just don't show anymore--cartoons like "The Daffy Duckaroo", "Golddiggers Of '49", and "Porky At The Crocadero". How many cartoons have they shown altogether? Eight hundred? Nine? When did these changes take place?
Thanks, folks!

CN's old ad in 1992/1993 for people to call their cable provider to pick up the network promised endless showings of Looney Tunes, Popeye, Tom & Jerry, Barney Bear, Tex Avery MGM cartoons, The Flinstones, and cartoons with goofy Indians.
My how times have changed.

Boomerang now does that.
CN used to air Magical Miestro unedited, and also used to air cartoons like Slightly Daffy and Hiawatha's Rabbit Hunt on a regular basis.

Cartoon network has gotten worse because they don't show any c;assic cartons.
Interestingly,the term
"broad" (and another tyhat rhymes with runt but is too graphic) can be used by even the PC police--Frank Sinatra, anyone (as opposed to Bing Crosby, the bigger star of the forties now reduced to a family man and "brute father")
BTW Maybe that's why DePatieFreleng's firstspecial (with Paul Winchell), Goldilocks, the soundtrack for which I saw in a used-LP store, today, ain't shown.
Bing Crosby's laid-back ballads were the music of the war years yet it seems kids don't like this, only the lesser popular bebop.Too bad.
"Peck Up Your Troubles" and "Buccaneer Bunny" also used to be uncut.

You can really blame the censorship on CN. Turner's BS&P is the one who tells what needs to be taken out.

I don't remember CN ever showing Buccaneer Bunny edited.

I definitely think CN has improved. While it's a shame they don't show very many classics anymore, it's definitely better than when they showed nothing but reruns of old shows. Nowadays we can get the best in brand new animated television which is way better than what the network originally was. If they could air a few more classics it would be even better, but the network is still great regardless.

Man... CNLA does edit that short...

it's definitely better than when they showed nothing but reruns of old shows. They show classics so little now that the channel really just shows nothing but reruns of new shows.

Yes it seems like there were endless reruns on The Cartoon Network, But when CN first went on line, there were still a lot of Hanna-Barbera series on the networks or in syndication and Cn had to wait untill the contracts expired before they could show them on the cable network. As for censorship, that is another matter.

CN has really gone downhill, in my opinion. They used to show classics all the time... but now they're just almost completely gone http://forums.toonzone.net/images/smilies/frown.gif Good thing I've got a pretty good cartoon collection, so, except for a couple of shorts I've happen to miss show up on "The Looney Tunes Show" and "The Popeye Show", I don't watch CN at all. When the new "Toon Heads" episodes air, I'll watch and tape them, but after that, CN is going to be blocked from my satelight receiver. Too bad too; they could do so much with their library.

Well, that is the real shame of it all, isn't it? So many great cartoons just gathering dust. If THEY won't show them anymore, CN ought to make some classic cartoon packages available to local stations, maybe calling it "Cartoon Network Presents," or something like that.
On another topic, did CN have the corner logo from the beginning?

On another topic, did CN have the corner logo from the beginning?
I was watching some "Underdog" and "Rocky and Bullwinkle" cartoons I recorded back in 1997 from Cartoon Network, and nope, it didn't have that corner logo.
I understand Cartoon Network airs new toons for kids, since kids wants to see something new, but I wish they at least air classics on mid-nights. I mean, who the hell would watch Cartoon Cartoons at mid-nights!?

So they used to show nothing but the classics, eh? Well in one hundred years, when the Cartoon Cartoons become classics, I'm sure CN will still be showing them, again and again, seven days a week, to atone for their treatment of the real classics.

Well Lets put it this way. When Cartoon Network first aired on cable it had VARIETY. Now its reruns of garbage cartoons (new toons) and nothing else. They used to show a mixture of stuff(Josie and the pussycats, Old Looney Tunes and ToonHeads) Old Hanna Barbera cartoons, Popeye cartoons, Superman(old cartoons), etc. Now they show ed ed and eddy every dang half hour. I love Scooby Doo but only the OLD ONES (with the Beatles Music in it) the newer ones stink. Cartoon Network lost their edge, and that my dear is sad. I havent watched the Cartoon Network in over 2 yrs because of it. I wish they created a NEW cable channel, like Turner Classic Movies that shows nothing but CLassic cartoons, shorts from all studios(wb, mgm, fleischer, Paramount) 24 hrs a day, with Documentaries. If not give me the dvds thats it.

So they used to show nothing but the classics, eh? Just wanted to get rid of possible confusion ... I said that they showed classics all the time, not "nothing but." CN had different shows on there too...

I agree with you cabe. However I'm not saying all the new toons are bad, but I remember when Cartoon Network had Cartoon Cartoon Fridays. Fine CN you can do that, but FRIDAYS ONLY. NOT RERUNS 24 hours of the same garbage. Its a sin, and I'll say it again it's a sin that CN has all the WB classic shorts and mgm etc and dont show them often enough. Don't even show them at night (10:00pm) weeknights so that older people (like me) can get to see them. Why have the library if you don't plan to use them. And NONE of those new cartoons can hold a CANDLE to the WB classic cartoons comedy. NOT ONE.

Adult Swim is on at midnight.

Opinion.
I find Dexter's Lab season 2, Ed, Edd, 'n' Eddy season 3, Courage the Cowardly Dog, and PPG much more enjoyable.

Opinion.
Widely held opinion.
Tell ya what, let's show an episode of "Dexter's Lab" and "Rabbit of Seville" back to back in a movie theater...guess which one would get the most laughs? Not Dexter!

Not that widely given the ratings the Cartoon Cartoons get(and don't give that BS about how they're only getting good ratings because they're overplayed when that actually hurts they're ratings because different people watch at different times.) And it would depend on the crowd and episode. I guarantee you if it was kids and a season one or two Dexter then Dexter would get more laughs.

Oh brother, not this again. I am closing this thread now. This will spare us all from having go through yet another "Cartoon Cartoons Are Superior to Classic Cartoons"-type thread which I am sure almost everybody on this board is sick of by now.
If you feel the need to continue this tired topic, go to the Cartoon Network Forum. But count me out...
