I thought that I would get into the act by starting a greatest cartoon thread and I wanted to start my selecting one of my favorite cartoon studios, Paul Terry's Terrytoons. So what does everyone think is the greatest Terrytoon cartoon ever made?

I remember seeing a Mighty Mouse cartoon DECADES ago (I was really young, honest) in which MM had to "throw down" with a cat that had been scientifically converted into a Frankenstein-like creature. That stayed with me a long, long time and is probably the best Terrytoon (if memorableness equals quality) that I've come across. Steve V.

That was "Frankenstein's Cat" (1942).

I have not seen a Terrytoon cartoon for years and don't remember liking them a lot.

I used to watch them on Channel 4 during the mid-1990's, and most of it was terrible (especially the 1960's cartoons). However, some of the Paul Terry cartoons were quite good, especially the Heckle & Jeckle cartoons (they were, by far, the best Terrytoon characters).

Heckle & Jeckle are by far the best characters that Paul Terry's studio created.

I also like what I've seen of Mighty Mouse, Gandy Goose & Sourpuss, Little Roquefort, and the Terry Bears.

I agree, those are the best Terrytoons cartoons.

It's those later 1960s Terrytoons series that are just plain bad. :o

If we're talking characters, then it's H&J, Sourpuss, Sidney and Deputy Dawg. If we're just talking thatrical cartoons, then imy favorites are "Sham Battle Shenanigans" and "Post-War Inventions" from the Gandy Goose-Sourpuss series,"Fox Hunt," "Rival Romeos,""Steeple Jacks," "Sno Fun," "Off to the Opera," "House Busters," "Ten Pin Terrors," "Bargain Daze," "Log Rollers," "Blind Date," and "Blue Plate Symphony" in the Heckle and Jeckyl series; "Sick Sick Sidney," "Sidney's Family Tree," and "Hide and Go Sidney" in the Sidney series, and also the Dinky Duck cartoon "It's a Living" and "Another Day, Another Doormat" in the John Dormat series (as for Deputy Dawg, the earliest made-for-TVs were the best, though I think Terrytoons just picked the ones for theatrical release later at random between the early and late releases).

The best Terrytoons shots are those that featured Mighty Mouse, Oil Can Harry and Pearl Pureheart. Terrytoons did at least had an identifiable style despite Terry's tight-fistedness.

I'll divide this into three catagories, with the first title being the best short from each of the top three Terrytoon characters.

HECKLE AND JECKLE
Blind Date
Hula Hula Land
Mint Men

MIGHTY MOUSE
Gypsy Life
At The Circus
The Mouse Of Tomorrow

GANDY GOOSE AND SOURPUSS
Post War Inventions
Sham Battle Shenanigans
The Exterminator

I have enjoyed the Heckle and Jeckle cartoons I have seen, such as "The Power of Thought," and I really liked the Mighty Mouse cartoons with Oil Can Harry in them. The Terrytoons seem to be much better than they are usually made out to be. Maybe, like Woody Woodpecker, the cartoons' lack of popularity is due to bad syndication packaging.

I think if it had the right person behind it, a new Terrytoon package could do wonders for Mighty Mouse, Heckle and Jeckle, and the other characters' popularity.

My favorites have to be Heckle and Jeckle, Mighty Mouse, Dimwit, the Terry Bears, Gandy Goose and Sourpuss, and I actually enjoy Deputy Dawg and Tom Terrific in the TV Terrytoons category.

In the Terrytoon tv field, I would say that Deputy Dawg is top notch in my book and along with favorite 60s Terrytoons characters such as...Hashimoto, Possible Possum and Sad Cat.

BTW:Just the other day, I just recieved from a very close friend of mine, so very hard to find Heckle And Jeckle cartoons on video..The H&J titles are

A Sleepness Night (1948)

Blind Date (1953)

Pirate's Gold (1957)

Stunt Men (1960)

All four shorts are excellent restored 35mm prints! :D

It's mostly Heckle and Jeckle titles that come to mind. My favorites are:

Off to the Opera
Dancing Shoes
The Power of Thought
Taming the Cat
Uninvited Pests

As for the other titles:

The Nutty Network
Pandora's Box
Sick, Sick Sidney
Another day, Another Doormat

Sick, Sick Sidney
"It's quiet huh? So quiet, quiet...I'm lonely..."-Sidney

haven't seen it for along time, so that quote may not be exact

If we're talking about titles my favorites would have to be:

Happy-Go-Lucky, Magpie Madness, Power of Thought, Pill Peddlers, and Rival Romeos from Heckle & Jeckle

Cat Happy and Pastry Panic from Little Roquefort

Perils of Pearl Pureheart, Triple Trouble, and Mouse of Tomorrow with Mighty Mouse

Dingbat Land and Post-War Inventions with Gandy & Sourpuss

and the one-shots The Helpful Genie and The Hard-Boiled Egg

Many of the Terrytoons output is rather slapdash and sloppy. I saw some in 35mm in a screening room once on the big screen (okay, it wasn't that big, but it was better than seeing them on tv) and the flaws were really magnified.

The stories and jokes could also be formulaic and repetitive, and worst of all they outright stole several jokes and plots from Tex Avery's MGM cartoons!

Mighty Mouse was also a rather bland character. He didn't do much except show up during the last 2 minutes of his own cartoon to beat up the villian.

I personally like the characters of Heckle and Jeckle, though, and Jim Tyer's animation always makes things a little more interesting. It's for these reasons that I place the Terrytoons above the output of Paramount's Famous Studios.
