Well, I saw RABBIT HOOD at the Music Box Theater in Chicago Saturday night. And frankly, I was disappointed. For a "restored" cartoon, it really didn't look that good at all. I was expecting the colors to be bold and vibrant, to leap off the screen. Instead, this was kind of pale, and even washed-out in places. The "That's All Folks!" ending REALLY looked bad. And this was a post-48 title, which should have looked pretty good in the first place! The print itself seemed to be in good condition, no lines or scratches, and no splices. Detail was sharp. The sound was okay, but could've been louder, I suspect a problem that lies with the Music Box and not the actual print.

I REALLY hope they aren't just blowing smoke when they say these cartoons are being restored, and I sure as hell hope they look better on DVD. Because I'm not convinced by what I've seen so far.

BTW, RABBIT HOOD was a Blue Ribbon print.

Can anyone verify if this is the same print as on the Robin Hood DVD?

I find this to be very troubling.

:bugs1:Man I hope thats a mistake, and they maybe sent the wrong print. I will be pissed if I buy the LT dvd's to get unrestored BR prints.

Here's some sad news... "Fast & Furry-Ous" is a Blue Ribbon on the DVD set... :(

Wasn't it confirmed by a certain someone that the post-48's weren't blue ribbon prints? Did I dream that?

Probably. Jerry pretty much hasn't announced any new information on the status on all of the cartoons yet...

Jerry also said that "Katnip Kollege" is a blue ribbon print on the "Robin Hood" DVD. I just hope they did some clean-up work on it so it doesn't look like my Laser copy.

I guess I did dream it. It's a nice thing to dream about though!

I also remember Jerry saying that some cartoons (like "Horton Hatches the Egg") will never be restored since no original material exists.

BTW, I hope "The Ducksters" and "Tweety's SOS" are fully restored since the BR prints have alternate title cards.

I also read that the original print of "Scarlet Pumpernickel" exists somewhere.

UCLA has a copy of it. And a faded 16mm copy turned up a while ago on ebay.:daffy:

The cartoon can be restored, it's just that the restored copy won't have original titles. So, the cartoon will still look better than we have ever seen it before, but it will still be a blue ribbon. Actually, none of the blue ribbon restorations will have thier original titles since WB is only editing them in on video.

Why do I get the distinct feeling that WB is trying to fake us out with these restorations? If they are only doing original titles on video, then the original elements are being left to rot!

They're being restored as in cleaning, repairing, etc... just not having the original titles or recreations built into the restorations. Since only a dozen and a half titles could have original titles taken from a real film source and the rest recreated... those recreations really shouldn't be preserved on film.

It's the opposite of what was going on with the Popeye cartoons before WB started to restore them. Sure, they put original titles back in, but that was only on video. Now, they're REALLY restoring the films. Of course, the Popeye cartoons were never chopped up for reissue.
