View Full Version : What's with the Padding in some Timm Designs?

i noticed that some characters in the animated shows have like square padding on their limbs. i dont know how to post pics (anyone want to help me out with that so i can edit this and add them :) ), but if u look at the Jor-el and Lara pics in the bio section, plus the JLU superman, and you'll notice they have a square pad on thier upper arms and forearms, and on the back of their hands, and also on their thighs and calfs.

plus, in batman: animated, when they show preliminary bb sketches, the batsuit had this padding as well. plus im sure there are other character designs with this that im forgetting. if anyone else can remember some please add.

well what do u think thats for? where did it come from? was it simply a design choice, or is it meant to be some kind of padding to protect those muscles, or enhance them, or what? anyway, please discuss.

I'm pretty sure they are simply a design choice. Don't quote me on this but I think that idea Bruce Timm uses may be influenced by Jack Kirby I know that a lot of Superman and BB was influenced by Jack Kirby work.

To put an image in a post copy the url of the image, (JUST the image alone not the entire web page that the image is found on) hit the 'insert image" button on top of your tool bar in your posting form. (it's a little picture of a mountain thing) paste the url into that and ta da! You're done. With that said here's Jor-El and Lara.

And the JLU.

That done I think it was just a sleek, design choice.

actually, i believe it's kryptonian design
so if you see a character in such garb, they're either from Krypton or have had interactions w/ their peoples.

Possible though that wouldn't explain why the BB Suit would have it unless Bruce digged Kryptonian fashion. ;)

The BB suit didn't have any square shapes on it...I think that's what the topics about. The squares on Jor-El, Lara and the JLU Superman..

...then again I could be wrong. But that's the general idea I get out of it...

In the final design no, I was referring the early design that Derek Powers spoke of.

They were supposed to be "utility pouches" but they were probably nixed because they looked "too Kryptonian"...
