Now You're Wondering "What the Hell Is This?" so I'll inform you how it goes:

Starting in this thread, someone picks their favorite Warner cartoon from a category, I will list. The person will pick their favorite cartoon from that specific category. The cartoon mentioned in the thread the most will make it to the semi-finals (which I will post in poll-form), and if really successful to the actual finals (with will also be in poll-form)

Rules:
You may only post one favorite cartoon

This week's category: Your favorite Warner cartoon from the Early Days (1929 to mid-1935)

(Personally, my favorite is "Lady Play Your Mandolin" but your opinions may differ:bosko: )

My favorite of that era is "Golddiggers of '49" (1935). I love the ending gag. Pretty funny cartoon... I am glad that I caught this when Cartoon Network had a rare Late-Nite Black-and-White last year (when they also aired "Porky's Romance" and Popeye's "Blow Me Down").

I might be alone on this one, but I like "You don't know what your Doin'." I love the surreal drunk sequence at the end. I really can't think of any other WB cartoon that had a scene like that. Besides that, I think it's a fun cartoon overall. I like Piggy's boucing mortorcyle, and his turn as a heckler. The close second for me is ""Hittin' the Trail for Hallelujah Land." I think it's the best song from those early cartoons, and is a little bit different in that it follows two character's storylines, Piggy and Uncle Tom. The music is the real strength though. I know Piggy was only in two cartoons, but I really think that those are the two strongest cartoons of their era.

Just a comment on this poll, I don't know if it's fair to include Tex Avery's cartoons. The criteria probably should be any cartoon made before "Golddigger's of 49." "Goldigger's" was a major turning point for the studio, and was far different than anything WB did before. It's hard to compare "Golddigger's of 49" to "A Great Big Bunch of You" Does anybody else agree?

I agree. When I first heard that this applied to the early years, I assumed it was pre-Porky/Avery. I consider the creation of Porky and the establishment of more Avery-like humor to be the first steps towards the studio's "mature" years.

"You Don't Know What You're Doin'" is that rare short where everything really clicked in the Harman-Ising era. Every one of 'em should've come off as well...especially the last part after they run out of the theater. How much of that booze did they down between leaving the stage and running out the door? :p Maybe if more 'toons were drunks, there would've been more of the cool visual effects like the ones in this short.

Of all the early cartoons I've seen, I'll have to agree with Barnyardawg on a preference for the Piggy cartoons - but I'll go with Hittin' the Trail to Hallelujah Land. I really like the story, and I can't help comparing this toon to Steamboat Willie & The Skeleton Dance for obvious reasons. My copy is on a PD tape which has no credits, but is a good print. I wish there had been more Piggy cartoons! :bosko:

LADY PLAY YOUR MANDOLIN is my favorite— again for an insane drunk sequence. Foxy and Roxy singing at fast tempo with their unbelievably wide, toothy mouths are just hilarious, too.
It's also one of my dad's favorite cartoons. My mom once asked him what its plot was about. He paused and said "well... a character just goes into a bar and orders a drink; that's about it! But the animators have so much imagination that no more plot is needed."
Pretty well-said, IMHO.

Exactly, barnyarddawg and Jack hit it right on the head.

This first poll was supposed to pertain to the early years, I'm sorry if I wasn't clear enough. You guys who voted for "Gold Diggers" should probably re-cast your votes, you can vote for that one in the next poll.

I haven't seen too many, but from the ones I've managed to come across, "Bosko's Picture Show" gets my vote.

Very well, Pietro, then my vote changes from "Golddiggers of '49" to "Lady Play Your Mandolin." I don't really have a reason for liking it. Maybe it's because I find the song so catchy. Foxy is a real rip-off of Mickey Mouse too, but I still like the cartoon. Not much in the way of plot, but as David said, the animators have a lot of imagination in this one.

This is my first post.

I'm pretty new to the WB obsession (though of course I loved the cartoons on TV as a kid), so I haven't seen many of the pre-"Haven't Got a Hat" toons (not "Lady Play Your Mandolin", not "Hittin' the Trail to Hallelujah Land", not "You Don't Know What You're Doin'"), but I really enjoyed "Three's a Crowd" and may actually prefer it to its later remake-of-sorts "Book Revue", crazy as that may sound.
