Ok, you might wanna grab the Kleenex's for this heart-wrencher.

From Yahoo News, as always:

THORNTOWN, Ind. - A woman who authorities said called the parents of a missing girl and claimed to be their long-lost daughter was charged Wednesday with committing a cruel hoax.

"We don't know what her motivation was and it is impossible for us to guess. We live in an age today where people like to receive attention," said state police 1st Sgt. Dave Bursten.

Donna L. Walker, 35, of Topeka, Kan., faces a felony charge of identity deception and a misdemeanor charge of false reporting. Her whereabouts were not known on Wednesday, authorities said.

Walker called the parents of Shannon Marie Sherrill and also is believed to have contacted news organizations to spread word about the possible break in the case, Bursten said.

He described her actions as a "cruel hoax."

Six-year-old Shannon vanished Oct. 5, 1986, as she played hide-and-seek outside her mother's mobile home in Thorntown, about 30 miles northwest of Indianapolis. Her father, William Michael Sherrill, broke down in tears during a news conference Wednesday announcing that the call was a hoax.

"I wasn't expecting this at all," said Sherrill, who learned about the hoax about 15 minutes before the news conference. "I thought they were going to bring Shannon in here."

The identity deception charge carries a maximum sentence of three years in prison, Boone County Prosecutor Todd Meyer said.

"I am very disappointed the case has taken this turn," Meyer said. "The case I want to prosecute was the case of an abductor and the happy ending is the child coming home. Unfortunately that's not the closing argument I get to make.

Authorities had planned DNA tests to determine whether the woman was the child.

Jody Ames, an aunt of the missing girl, said the last several days had been draining on the family.

"It's been a very big roller coaster," she said. "We've been up and down, we've hoped for the best. We still hope for the best. We can only hope and pray."

Bursten said investigators did not know a motive for the hoax. Walker had given three different fictitious names to investigators in recent days, he said.

Topeka police Lt. John Sidwell said officers there were helping in the search for Walker.

"We've had no contact with the suspect," Sidwell said. "We're continuing to look for her."

Bursten said he expected Walker would be arrested soon.

"We know who she is, she can't hide forever," he said. "Now the rest of the country will know what she's accused of and what she's done."

Oy. First off, she shouldn't have lied to them in the first place. That's just wrong. Even worse, she's facing a maximum sentence of ONLY FOUR YEARS! Gah! She should've gotten life for that.

Just awful.

i can't even fathom what that must be like for the family.

as for walker, i don't know about life or anything, but certainly more than three-four years. she seems like a pathological liar who needs some counciling.

That's sad. I guess that girl thought she could be treated special if she pretended that she was their missing daughter. What a creul thing to do!

People take advantage of people all of the time, but this one is definitely one of the most disgusting. I don't think anything less than ten years would be enough. Then she could really suffer.

What a complete and utter piece of trash. I am sickened by this person.

Unbelieveable. Really, just unbelieveable that someone could do this. It's hard to imagine what was going through the person's mind while she was doing this. Was she getting some sort of perverse kick out of it? Was it really just some bizarre, sick cry for attention? Is she not sane? Who knows.

Imagine the parents having their deepest wish (to have their daughter back) seemingly granted, only to have it ripped away from them. And then there's the media circus. Just awful.

I heard this story on the news. I think what the woman did is just plain wrong. I mean that is such a cruel joke. On the news, she said that all she was doing was trying to help out the family! Yeah, right. She probably just wants to get out of jail time. I feel sorry for the poor family to go through such a thing.

There is one good thing that may come of all this. All of the media attention might help find the real Shannon Marie Sherrill.

The woman who did this is just sick. My heart goes out to the Sherrill family. I can't even imagine what they must be feeling right now :(

I cannot see the motivations behind a person for them to commit an act like this. It seems like everyone is out to hurt everyone else, with no real purpose. I hope that she gets arrested, because doing something as stupid as this deserves punishment.

No, the news just makes it seem that way. It's important to remember that people like this are a minority, and most people are generally good, or at the very least, nowhere near as bad as this.

I was outraged when I first heard about this on TV, but when I saw the reactions of the family of the missing girl, I wanted to puke over the hoax that this woman took part in. That family has gone through enough trauma for 15+ years, and now they were fooled into having some hope. It's a good thing that this woman was found, especially since it would be obvious that it's a hoax if she lied and called from Kansas claiming that she was in Virginia Beach (which is the case here). Good thing they tracked the call to make sure it was true or not!

And four years in jail? That's like getting a month in jail for robbing a bank. She deserves to be there even longer.
