View Full Version : Disney Sequel Talkback - Return of Jafar (Spoilers)
Every week I will make a talkback for a Disney sequel. My Disney Sequel Talkbacks will only include movies made by the Disney's tv studios, so you won't see The Rescuers Down Under, Fantasia 2000, or Toy Story 2.
Okay, let the talkback begin :D

I thought this movie was interesting, but you can tell this was met to be the opening to the Aladdin TV Series.

This was personally my favorite of the DTV sequels. If only they hadn't made the third Aladin movie, that was just horrible. But this one was good and managed to keep some of the charm of the original movie.

Ehhhhh, I thought this movie was barely passable. The songs were very forgetable, and the script was just a bore. And what's worst of all, Jafar wasn't even that...well...scary. He was just some guy with powers that had to be thwarted by the end of the movie.
The only purpose this did serve was to build a bridge between the movie and the TV series - by introducing Abis Mal, bringing Iago onto the good side, and eliminating Jafar once and for all. That's about it.
Compared to the movie, it's a huge step down, on all counts. Even compared to the TV series and the third movie, I still think it lacks a great deal.
2 stars, tops.

I gave it 1 1/2.
This was my first experience with Disney's Straight-to-video sequels. They had this deal from Blockbuster, something like you bought this, Alladin and you got one free rental a week for 10 weeks. Something like that. I was so excited and so incredbily let down. I watched it once and it has sat on my shelf since.
While Dan castelleneta is a great voice actor his voice just doesn't have the oomph that Robin Williams had. And Gilbert Gottfried really should stick to pure villiany. Iago's turning to the good side really annoyed me.
And Genie's wristbands. What's up with that? The symbols of 10,000 years of slavery and he puts them back on. Thankfully I can't remember much of the storyline but I do remember being very dubious about the path they took. They should have fast-forwarded 15 years, put Alladin and Jasmine on the throne and had their son or daughter go on adventures
Because of this film I wont pay to see any Disney animated movies that weren't one of their FLAFs.

This was the first ever D2V sequel. But by accident; it was originally just the two-hour pilot for the TV series. But then in mid-production management decided to turn it into a D2V. That forced the makers to finish it much earlier than originally planned, and it shows. :( There's very little story in RoJ and RoJ has a slipshod look to it. The makers of the "Aladdin" series tried to make up for RoJ by vastly improving production values on "Aladdin and the King of Thieves", with moderate success, IMHO. Also, I'm not sure if the RoJ makers had any idea that "cheapquels" would so overtake Disney as it turned out. :(

I remember enjoying this movie more when I was younger. It wasn't bad at all, when you think how Disney sequel's are nowadays. It was a pretty good lead in to the series anyway.

I was completely not impressed when I saw it, but it's actually one of the better sequels now, as sad as that is. :P I enjoyed King of Thieves though.
Yeah, I noticed about the genie's wristbands too! ^_^
What I hated most were that the songs were completely forgettable.
So you don't remember "You can't forget about love", "I'm looking out for me", "There's nothing in this world just like a friend", etc.?

No. :P Well, now that I think about it, I remember that "You can't forget about love" was completely atrocious and it sounded like they crammed conversational sentences to music and NOT in an effective way.
Return of Jafar.....not great, yet watchable....I'd give it 2 and a half stars....the songs are forgettable, the animation isn't good(the later TV series, and the second sequel do it better),and no Robin Williams(much as I love Dan Castellaneta as Homer Simpson, his Genie just doesn't compare to Williams')
Well, the animation wasn't something to write home about... but then again, there is the thing with the TV series and Disney releasing it on video... I actually thought Dan Castellaneta did a good job as the Genie, but Robin Williams just did a better job, and was more fitting.
At least his delivery was decent. :)
"Pool is a man's game, so being a rug you're at a disadvant-- Eh, pool's a dumb game anyways -_-" :D

The movie sucked for one reason:
Robin Williams NOT voicing the genie.

Didn't Robin Williams have a fight with Disney or something, and that's why he didn't voice the Genie in the sequel or the TV serise?
Just like Crispin Glover didn't appear in the "Back to the Future" sequels because he had a fight with Robert Zemeckis.
Here's an article that explains what happened
