The biggest underground hit in the modern world of comics, Sam and Max, is making a BIG comeback.
Sam and Max was a comic book series about a talking canine and hyperkinetic rabbity-thing who solved strange mysteries that noone else cared about, working as "freelance police." Their escapades took them to the moon, to cheesy road-side diners, and even to the mall! Wow!
Sam and Max exploded in 1993/1994 when Lucasarts released the computer game, which rose sale charts to be one of the top 10 selling and most popular computer games in history. They even had their own short-lived cartoon in 1998 before FOX Kids shelved all of their current projects to take on a "new" look(which was basically to try and compete with the new kid on the block: Pokemon).
But now they're back. And you won't be able to hide from them.
AtLarge Features Syndicate will soon be running a weekly Sam and Max comic strip in your local or not-so-local newspaper. How much Purcell will be able to get away with is unknown, but it'll definitely be a kick in the pants to newspaper cartoonists.
Sam and Max also have a sequel coming out to their original computer game. Developed by Infinite Engine, the game will be headed to consoles rather than computers. It will be on either PS2 or X-Box. Or both. They have not specified.
They have put up concept shots of the game on their webpage at www.infinite-engine.com. The duo's new adventure seems to take place in space, with a more outer-spacey squad car to boot. No genre has been specified, but it appears the game will be in 3D. Steve Purcell is directly involved with the game and rest assured, it would be good.
And, somewhere down the pipeline is a new issue of the Sam and Max comic book series. But Steve has not said when or where it would debut, if he even ever gets it finished.
