That was "Lupin the Third," nowadays called "The First Lupin TV Series."
I'd prefer people didn't refer to Lupin in "seasons." There were three SERIES:
-"Lupin the Third" (the "First Series"), 23 episodes, 1971-1972, Lupin wears a teal-green jacket
-"Lupin the Third Part II" (the "Second Series," aka "The New Lupin the Third"), 155 episodes, 1977-1980, Lupin wears a red jacket
-"Lupin the Third Part III" (the "Third Series"), 50 episodes, 1984-1985, Lupin sports a pink(!) jacket
The first SERIES didn't even run a complete season: it was originally planned for 26 episodes (a regular anime season) but was cut short and restaffed partway through. Some of the episodes were also rewritten because of this change.
"Lupin the Third Part II" was never broken into "seasons" as we consider them. In Japan, there was a new episode EVERY WEEK for three years straight.
"Lupin the Third Part III" was similar to Part II: every week a new "Lupin" story aired, until the last episode. The last episode was delayed (in Japan) for a few weeks for some strange reason.
Anyhow, yes, you were watching SERIES 1. The Second TV Series is what is airing now on Cartoon Network. We don't know yet if CN will be renewing for a second American season of the show from Pioneer, but from what I've heard, it's unlikely that they will.

Why would they not renew it? I thought it was pretty successful.

I figure they'll renew it so that they can get a few shows with high episode counts so that they can cut down on reruns. If they can get 50+ episodes of Inuyasha and Lupin, then they can play them every night without having the shows restart every few weeks.
Anyhoo, yeah, Lupin is called Cliff Hanger in a few countries. In fact, there was a laservision arcade game (like Dragon's Lair or Space Ace) released here called Cliff Hanger and it contained scenes from Castle of Caligistro.

Good job, yes, "Cliff Hanger", made in 1983 by Stern Eletronics (I think) used footage from both the "Castle of Cagliostro" and "Secret of Mamo" Lupin films and combined them into one American LaserDisc arcade game.
Anyone remember the user "nothing?" Um, well.....he's my source on the matter. I asked what the likelihood of Lupin's reneweal was, and he said:
"possible, but not probable."
I take that as a "don't bet on it." Anyone else disagree?

Thats a shame, as Lupin is now one of my favorite shows now. Is there any news on any of the specials coming to the US on DVD?

I wouldn't be surprised if the series wasn't renewed. It's a shame, but that's what happens when a series is brought over 20 years late.
I'm pretty disappointed with how Pioneer handled the dubbing. From what I've heard of their treatment of the Mamo movie, I'm shocked. Streamline was notorious for rewrites, but they were minor compared to what Pioneer did.

Well it would make sense to keep Lupin on TV screens because Fox is making a live action Lupin III movie. Monkeypunch himself said that as long as the five main characters are included and their personalities are kept intact he is all for it.
Although since AOLTW is a Fox competitor maybe they don't want to advertise for their competition?

I don't know. I thought WS and a lot of the other people at CN were Lupin fans. And I can't see why Pioneer would be against it.

Eh, I'd like Lupin to be renewed, but at least they'll still be releasing the DVDs if they don't (even though they're coming like once every 3 months).
But, I still think CN would want a few shows with high episode counts, especially if AS does expand into the night. Hopefully it will get renewed.

Well, can't say this is really unexpected. I mean, Lupin is the lowest rated Adult Swim show. And honestly, I can see why. The comedy portions are pretty dull, and the plot, well, it's pretty hard to follow when there's a bunch of plotholes each episode.

Damn! I had planned to let the '77 series alone for now, and just collect the theatrical releases and specials until the first series is dubbed (which will end up being a very long time.) I guess I may change my plans...

It's more likely that anime (with the exception of IY) hasn't been doing such a great job of bringing in ratings. Or perhaps it's the extremely late timeslot. Maybe it's the short seasons and endless reruns... Take your pick!

I really want to see the other series as well, especially the original. I also wish that it survives long enough that the movies could be shown in the future.

Perhaps they'd have better luck airing the newest movie, "First Contact", which provides a good starting point in the Lupin III franchise; and then air the new TV series airing later this year in Japan. Frankly, I didn't expect Lupin III to last long; it's just too old.

I think that's the reason, I mean Lupin is the last show that comes on! And 1:30 is pretty late too...

Hey Jaguar, when John Aschcroft and his stormtroopers appear to take you away, you want to tell him several nasty four letter words that aren't allowed on Adult Swim for me? ;)

Pioneer does not have the rights to "Episode Zero: First Contact" (which would be nice, but they don't). FUNimation MAY have them, but there's been no confirmation of such a thing, and none of FUNimation's Lupin films have even reached CN's airwaves just yet. Not even the Toonami-worthy edit of "The Secret of Twilight Gemini."
Regarding a new Lupin TV series.....yeah, what the heck ARE you talking about? There are no new TV series airing in Japan. There is a new full-length TV special airing this week in Japan, but that's a traditional, annual thing. There's the GameCube game coming out in Japan the day before, as well. But...no new TV series...

Yea, I've gotten all of FUNi's releases so far, and I must say, they're horrible. The only exception to that is Twilight Gemini. It was decent. If some scenes w/ Fujiko were editted, it would work w/ Toonami.

I know nothing about the coming TV special but saw it listed on Anime News Network under the "TV" section and naturally assumed it was a full-fledged series rather than the annual special. My apologies; I mis-interpreted ANN's report.
Still, if someone could get a hold of the "First Contact" movie... well, it seems like a no brainer and should have been on CN from the start.

Yep, but that doesn't really apply to the whole "TV series" confusion, as the game has been released in Japan for months now. I was thinking of up-and-coming Lupin things in Japan to see where the confusion may have lain.
As far as your confusion, EscaPilot, apology accepted. Sorry if I was harsh on you. ;)
Random fact of the day-
In 1983, a Laserdisc game called Cliff Hanger was made by piecing together and dubbing an episode of Lupin III with Dragon Lair style bits. Although Lupin was called "Cliff", if you look at it today, it's obviously the perverted theif.

As I said earlier in this very thread:
"Cliff Hanger", made in 1983 by Stern Eletronics (I think) used footage from both the "Castle of Cagliostro" and "Secret of Mamo" Lupin films and combined them into one American LaserDisc arcade game.
To add even more details to this:
Shortly after the time of its creation, "Secret of Mamo" (originally titled just "Lupin the Third") was dubbed into English to either (a)sell to the American video/film markets and/or (b)be used in trans-Atlantic flights when showing the movie. The one scene from "Secret of Mamo" that was used in "Cliff Hanger" used this English dub.
However, at this time, the only English translation of "Castle of Cagliostro" available was a subtitled film print.
Since there was no English dub available for the majority of "Cliff Hanger," the creators of the game used the Japanese audio.
Here is the punchline of the gag.
The creators and developers of the game likely didn't have, say, the budget or time to gather a professional voice cast or sound equipment to properly dub over the voices in the audio (obviously or else it would sound different than it does). So all they did was play back the Japanese audio and *talk over* the Japanese voices. You can hear them both at the same time! Ha!
Anyhow, yeah. That's the news, "The Simpsons" is next, on FOX 12.
