Because, I was working at Target today, and low and behold, a guy comes through my lane wearing a Sealab 2021 shirt. After the usual formalities, I told him his shirt rocked, and we started to talk about the show, and not only was he a fan, but he knew his stuff (IE: MC Chris leaving for Williams Street). Definetely made my day.
Anyone else have an experience like that?

I had an run way last week when I was out of town. I was looking at some graphic novels of Dragon Ball, and Inuyasha. Me and this kid begin to have conversation about Inuyasha, and some adult swim shows.

Last year in my film class, there was a guy that had a Cowboy Bebop shirt on. Later on, I wore my Sealab him and he commented on it. He said he won the shake air freshiner and it stunk up his car. We ended up talking about other AS stuff, including how we both miss Mission Hill.
Although, I've worn my Harvey Birdman shirt a couple of time and nothing has happened.

Well, I recently found out my cousin was coincidentally a die-hard Adult Swim fan. How's that for unexpected?

Hmmm, I once overheard some people talking about the Williams Street a while back. I think there were some other times, but this is the one I remember the most.

well, in general the comedy shows seem to be pretty popular. I was actually rather surprised when I was at a fraternity house and they turned on Adult Swim and commented on how funny and cool it was. But, I have yet to find fans of the anime shows. But, of course, now that the anime shows air on Sundays maybe more people will start to watch them, but who knows.

At a college party I went to once (mind you, this was a party for people who frequented a local chat board, so perhaps they were geekier than most) someone (after Clone High was over) turned on Adult Swim. Some people were making fun of it (especially Inu Yasha) but other people were trying to pay attention and yelling at people to shut up over all of the noise.
Drunk people seriously trying to watch anime. . . . it's priceless.

A good 87% of everyone I run into has heard of AS. 50% of them actually watch it. 15% of them watch it for anime.
Statistics are fun.

Way back when Adult Swim had first started on CN, I went to a Christmas Party with my brother-in-law's family. Being the unsocial introvert that I am, I snuck away to the living room to put on Dragon Ball Z (the party was during Toonami hours) and some guy sits down next to me with a DBZ hat on, asking me if I liked DBZ.
"Eh... I watch it, but it's not half as good as most anime like Cowboy Bebop..."
Then, he replied with how much he liked Cowboy Bebop as well. From there, the conversation evolved to talking about how good a job Cartoon Network was doing with airing Cowboy Bebop on Adult Swim... and from there, the conversation evolved to how surprised both of us were at just how good the AS shows like Aqua Teen Hunger Force and Sealab 2021 were. Considering that this was during the very early days of AS (I think it was actually only about the third, maybe foruth week of it) I was really surprised to find someone like this.

I've ran into a few. I wore a Home Movies shirt to school one day, a few people actually recognized it. Even more people at my school know of the WS shows...
As for ASA...I remember a conversation I had with my friend Shawn a few months back:
Shawn: Hey, after that Home Movies show, do you ever watch those weird-ass Japanese shows that come on?
Joe: I think I watch it like...once.
Shawn: Those things are ****ing gay!
...not kidding, either. Heh.

I was once at a dinner party thing, and the hosts' kid (about two and a half years old) came down for a bit. Someone tried to offer her food, and she yelled out "I want candy!" Under my breath, I said "Bubble gum and taffy..." and the guy sitting next to me (I hadn't met him before) turned and grinned. We then starting talking about AS, specifically ATHF and Space Ghost, and how AS was the best thing to happen to television in years. It made the whole party a lot more interesting.

You have mean friends, Landstander, it makes me sad......
anyway, i run into them all the time at school, most of them in my claasses, of course they're CGI classes so we all have some kind of pre-disposition to animation anyway, so go figure, even the teacher was into Bebop and Trigun somehting fierce. This one guy would religiously stay up with his finacee and watch it all, they loved Reign and Inuyasha.

Today at Six Flags Great Adventure, one of those pathetic theme park photographers commented on my cool Cowboy Bebop shirt. But I still didn't let him take my picture.

If people learned I liked anime I would never live it down. I'd be called a gay f** ALL the time. Are most people's schools like this?

No, I'm homeschooled. :p

Well, I don't think that helped much....anyways, don't worry about what other people think. They're the ones missing out because they're too pig-headed to learn about other cultures.
Just find your own group of friends who like it and scheme against the other ones. And make time-bombs that'll toast their skin and then you can laugh about it with your friends while eating marsh...........

Well, it depends on what you mean by like it? I used to be really into anime. Like I listened to the soundtracks and had posters hanging in my room and such. But, I've toned it down in years since then. I certainly won't not watch something just because someone thinks it's gay, but at the same time I never bring up anime if no ones talking about it.
Oh, I have a story! One time one of my roommates friends was in my room and Family Guy was on. This guy likes the comedy shows in general. Anyway, he asked me if I was watching Family Guy on DVD and I said
"No, it's on Cartoon Network." and he said
"Oh, I see, it's on Adult Swim." And after thoroughly enjoying Family guy Trigun came on. It was that episode where the first scene was when Knives and Vash fought. When Vash's huge gun arm came out and Vash was screaming he said
"I've seen this five minutes and I already hate it." I really didn't know how to respond to that statement so I just said
"Well, you have to see it from the beginning" which was actually probably a stupid thing to say. Nevertheless, when one of the female characters did one of those squinty eye poses he asked
"What's with her eyes." and I said
"Uhhhh..they're closed." Then when she did one of those big eyed surprised takes he said
"Now they're really big, what the hell?" Then I said,
"well, almost everyones eyes in this show are big." Then he said
"Yeah, why are all their eyes so big?" Then I said
"I don't know, why are the Simpsons eyes so big, why are the eyes on the people in Futurama so big?" To which he responded
"Because that's Matt Groenings style. The characters on those shows don't look anything like real people." Now, the natural counter argument to this statement would have been
"Well, this is ______ style." Unfortunately, I had no idea who drew Trigun, so instead I just said
"well, these characters don't really look like real people either." Anyway, that was pretty much the end of the conversation, but when a later scene came on when that big guy asked Vash to take off his clothes he let out a very confused
"What?" He left during the commercial break. Man, that story was longer than I thought it would be.

See, there's an anime club in my college. However, they are almost all otaku elitists who loath all dubs, and almost all of them rarely give US animation any respect (ASC is probably the one exception). Ironically, I'd be surprised if half of them have actually bought any anime, rather than bootlegged it. I don't know what part of "licenced" these people don't understand is, but it's annoying.

A lot of my friends are like that in high school (always downloading, never buying, anti-dub), and it really frustrates me. For them, it completely ruins the experience if the anime they're watching is in English. It especially bothers me if the dub is actually really, really good and accurate (Cowboy Bebop, Big O, FLCL). There are a few of them who are occasionally open-minded towards dubs and American animation.
I guess I'll make a point: anime is great, but it too has its fair share of complete and utter crap.
Back to Adult Swim - my friend Brad loves it. But what surprised me was three months ago we were sitting at lunch and he commented on my Cowboy Bebop shirt. It turns out he watches Adult Swim for everything, but the anime is the highlight of the night.
Another time I wore a ATHF shirt to school and this kid named Nathan in my English class noticed it. He's a gigantic fan of the comedy portion of AS and loves Bebop, but can't really dig Inuyasha and Reign.

I once was a part of an anime club, but I hated it for the reasons you mentioned. I mean, I GET the whole subs are superior to dubs argument. As an artform you want to watch a movie in it's original language. Meaning can be lost when dubbing to another language.
However, it seems that this ISN'T the reasoning most purists have for not liking dubs. Instead they hate dubs because they make anime more popular. I mean, in this anime club, the president and vice preseident constantly complained whenever Cartoon Network picked up a new anime because then they'd have to listen to newbies who start to like it. They seem to have some mentality where if something's popular it's bad. It also seems that 80% of their anime is fansubbed because whenever something gets commercially released they begin to hate it. They seem to have an attitude that watching anime makes them special or something and when more people watch anime it makes them less special or some crap like that.
I haven't been to one of their meetings for years, mostly just because in general they weren't very nice people. Which is strange because most girls in anime are always nice and sweet and cherubic, yet the girls in this anime club were none of the above. They were always in a bad mood and got pissed off very easily. I've learned that you shouldn't choose your friends based on their interests but instead you should choose friends based on their hearts.

The girls in the anime club were sometimes overzealous in there affections towards me (I'm just so huggable and my lap is just made for naps I guess) but they were so off in there little world, that dating any of them just didn't work. It's weird to date a girl into yaoi hentai, ya know what I mean?
Back on topic, I'll note that in the break room at work, Adult Swim is often on the TV (yay for satalite in the breakroom). I've also had 30 minute discussions about AS shows too at work (what else is there to do at lunch, other than eat?)
There was this one guy, a jokester in my pre-calculus class, who came out with the clown tatto symblolizing street warfare joke. I knew he watched it, just by the delivery.

Basically, 7 out of 10 people who consider themselves to be more knowlegable about a topic believe that when something becomes common enough, it's no longer worth knowing about. It's more common with music because bands actually do sell-out (much like DBZ did with its suberbly crappy plotlines) and care only for the money.
