Why is the razz sound of The Crackpot Quail edited? It seems harmless to me!!! They made a bad job trying to hide it too, because there is a part where the dog tries to imitate the quail and he sticks his tongue out (and spit). He is obviously making a rassberries sound. It makes me mad. Do they think that we're stupid & don't notice?

I heard that the Hays office felt rassberries were too rude. Characters couldn't make rude noises, but they could say them (such as saying "burp" instrad of actually burping).

yup...

raspberries were considered, at one time Very rude (as in wash-your-mouth-out)

but, then again the Hayes office thought 'most EVERYTHING rude - check out the fight over Rhett Butler's 'Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn' in GWTW - huge battle (which made Hayes look bad)

Although I've seen the story about the rasberry edit often, I kind of wonder how much of it was actually there in the first place.

When Willoughby is describing the sound and then is corrected by the quail, Avery's gag deliberately calls for a "wolf whistle" as the quail acts out the curves of a woman with his hands. A "wolf rasberry" from the quail would have made no sense at that point and would have ruined the gag, something Tex was not in the habit of doing.

Actually, not all of the whistles in the toon were originally razzes. The one that definitely WAS was the part when, in the current print, the quail whistles REALLY loudly into Willoughby's face. Notice that he sticks his tongue out, and spit flies everywhere. I think that's the raspberry that was altered.

That makes more sense than what has been written, which makes it sound like all of the whistles were originally razzing sounds.
