View Full Version : Movies that time (and people) forgot

While watching one of my favorite movies last night, I wondered why other did not like it as much as I did. Why certain movies tend to be automatically panned by critics, not seen by people in the theaters and, ultimately, ends up as filler in schedules on TBS or TNT.
So, I ask you guys and gals, what movies do you like that time (and people) forgot? What movies do you like, personally, that the mass public consider crap?
Some of mine include...
Tango & Cash (the movie in question from last night)
Pump Up The volume
Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within
Real Genius
10 Things I Hate About You (ducks as stuff is thrown)
Grosse Point Blank
The Gate
I am sure I will think of more...
Who's next? :)

The Black Hole (1979) - I LOVE this movie! Bombed at the time, but I think it's a great, gritty sci-fi flick.
Flash Gordon (1980) - Cheesy, hammy, but SOOO quoteable with some fantastic Queen music!!
Starship Troopers - I've said enough about this film in previous threads.. love it!
Battle Beyond The Stars - Robert Vaughn is great as the mercenary and Peppard as the Space Cowboy. Made me cry as a kid!

I loved this movie as a kid it was called
Baby: the lost dinosaur I think thats what it was called I thought it was great
Here it is: Baby: Secret of the Lost Legend (http://us.imdb.com/Details?0088760). I used to love it, too. :)
Here are some I'm thinking of:
Reckless Kelly (1993) - A Yahoo Serious movie. Weird but amusing.
The Rocketeer (1991) - Doesn't get as much love as it deserves.
Dick Tracy (1990) - Similar reasoning as with The Rocketeer.
Career Opportunities (1991) - Kinda dumb, but as with The Rocketeer, it co-stars Jennifer Connelly! ;)
Ernest Goes to Jail (1990) and Ernest Saves Christmas (1988) - Two really fun films from a guy who was often taken for granted as a comedian.
Plan 9 From Outer Space (1959) - This is definitely one of the funniest movies ever made. Just because it is often called the worst movie ever made doesn't mean that it isn't highly entertaining! "You see? You see?! Your stupid minds! Stupid! Stupid!" :D
UHF (1989) - I bet there are a lot of Seinfeld fans who haven't seen this. They really owe it to themselves if only to see Michael Richards' scenes - he really steals the movie! Overall, though, there are laughs a-plenty (Raul's Wild Kingdom is so great!) and the DVD has nice extras, too.
TRON (1982) - A severely underrated classic. People really owe it to themselves to check this out again, as people in general have finally caught up to all the computer jargon that set this movie ahead of its time. It's really a beautiful, unique looking movie, too!
Explorers (1985) - A movie I still enjoy many years after its release, starring young Ethan Hawke and River Phoenix as part of a trio who meet TV-loving aliens. Good stuff.
Flight of the Navigator (1986) - This is from the golden era of Disney TV movies in the mid 80's. It's funny, looks cool and has a neat story. It also features a very young Sarah Jessica Parker sporting a punk hairdo and outfit. :)
The Last Starfighter (1984) - A decent kiddy sci-fi flick. Saw it for the first time a few years ago and liked it a lot more than I figured I would.
Robot Jox (1990) - Pretty dumb movie, with one of the worst endings I've ever seen, but gotta love those robots!
Strange Brew (1983) - Gotta represent Canuck style, yo! :p This movie was pretty popular way back when, and helped Bob and Doug McKenzie become household names (there was even a day named in their honor in Los Angeles!). Now an entire generation has no idea who they are. :( I miss those guys...
Ok, that's enough for now. I'm surprised I thought of that many, though!
Outlander00 "What movies do you like, personally, that the mass public consider crap?"
Well, I know I'll think of more as soon as I log off but in the meantime then ...
A.I. Artificial Intelligence (hides behind sofa as past-its-sell-by-date stuff is thrown but remains defiant!)
The Color Purple
Killing Dad
The Young Poisoner's handbook
Trains, Planes & Automobiles
Thin Red Line
The Running Man *tries to look apologetic*
The Gate (haven't seen this for ages, thanks for the reminder!)
Jean de Florette
Stargate
How to Get Ahead in Advertising
Starship Troopers
Osmosis Jones
The Big Blue
Hamburger Hill
Alien 3
Final Fantasy Spirits Within
Throw Momma from the Train
Rocket Man
Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid
Wish You Were Here

Tron - It was a movie ahead of it's time. Very clever - especially the technical aspect.
Blade Runner - My favourite film of all time.
Kingpin - The funniest film I've seen in ages yet the least appreciated from the Bros.
Ghostbusters 2 - The script was funnier than the first even if the story was a little dire.

I am glad I am not the only one who enjoyed Tango & Cash (for the longest time I felt I was the only one on this planet who did :p)
Here are some more that I could think of... (and thanks to some of you that have jogged my memory)
Tron - I didnt think this was panned as much as it is, considering its the first movie to use CG
Office Space - Very funny movie from Mike Judge
Blade Runner - quintessential Sci-Fi movie
Thin Red Line - I enjoyed this very much because of the use of exestialism writings and and poems used to correspond to the image of the movie
Rocketeer - I think its one of the coolest comic book movies ever :D
PCU - Not up there with Animal House, but very enjoyable
Predator 2 - Better plot than the first one, I thought... It deffinately had promise
Starship Troopers - Does justice to the book and was very well done, I thought
Last Starfighter - A great kiddy sci-fi adventure flick... Nostalgic :D
National Lampoon: Van Wilder - Again, not up there with Animal House, but hilarious none the less! "Are you stalking me? If you are, that'd be super!" :D
The Wraith - Loved it when it came out... Especially the car (and, as we all know, chicks dig the car :p)
Howard The Duck - Yes, I admit... I like this movie :D
My Science Experiment - A very cool teenage sci-fi movie with solid performances by Dennis Hopper and Fisher Stevens
Hackers - What else could I say about this movie that does it justice? :D
Flash Gordon - Yes I agree with SJJ on this one :)
A.I. - An acid induced version of Pinocchio... Very well done, I thought.
Full Metal Jacket - Killed by critics (and my father [a marine on Paris Island]), I thought it was a pretty good.
Fled - A forgotten Lawrence Fishburne movie... I thought it was well scripted and was pretty cool to watch.
The Ninth Gate - Very dark and thought the plot line and writing was very good. Who would have thought Johnny Depp could play that role?

Hurrah! Fellow A.I. fans!
I'm gonna have to throw in Iron Giant, Cats Don't Dance and The Powerpuff Girls Movie. People dismissed them just because they weren't made by Disney, but they really turned out to be quite good.

Dragonheart - Starring Dennis Quaid, Dina Meyer, and Sean Connery as the voice of Draco. This movie didn't do well in the box office and the only reviews I heard were all bad. So when I rented it I was expecting something bad, but I loved it and thoroughly enjoyed it. I love fantasy and this movie was well done. The story was simple and classic with a good mix of action, adventure, and humor. The highlight was the relationship building between Draco and Bowen. There was no sappy romance interfering with the plot and Draco is the best CG creature mixed in with live action. The movie also has a wonderful score written by Randy Edelman, which has been used in many movie trailers and award shows.

October Sky. It's not flashy, but it is simply a great movie that most people seem to have never heard of. I had fogotten about it until today when I saw it cheap on dvd at Wal-Mart and picked it up. It still captures my imagination. A classic coming of age story that is made all the more poignant by the fact that it's true. I've got no more words for it. This is simply a quality, under-rated film.

It was a rather amusing twist on Taming of the Shrew. I admit, I didnt want to see it at first but my girlfriend forced me to do so (I am not kidding, she actually took me by the ear and pulled until I submitted :p) but I dont regret seeing it. I thought Julia Stiles was funny and it was the American debut of Heath Ledger (who is a good actor). The writing was pretty inventive considering the two sources.

Deep Rising - Great horror/monster film, with plenty of action and humor.
Judge Dread - How could you not like a film with a kick-ass robot like that? Plus, Stallone's mangled "I am the law" deserves mention.
Daylight - A good survival movie, kinda reminds me of The Posidon Adventure.
Demolition Man - (And here I was not considering myself a Stallone fan.) Lots of explosions, Wesley Snipes, and rat burgers make for a fun film. :)
The Posidon Adventure - A great survival film, one of the best. Once I saw Gene Hackman in Enemy of the State, I immediately called him "thay guy from The Posidon Adventure".
Commando - One of many reasons: "Remember when I told you that you would be the last one to die? I lied."
DragonHeart - It's what really got me "hip" to Sean Connery.
Deep Blue Sea - A horror/monster film that goes against the horror/monster film stereotypes.
The black man made it!!!! :D
Evolution - Does this count? Oh well, it's on my list anyways.
GhostBusters 2 - Lady Liberty's scene makes up for any problems with the rest of the movie.
The Flight of Dragons - An old Rankin-Bass TV movie, so right off the bat, you know it's got potential. But they never show it anymore, so I'm glad I taped it all those years ago.
That's all I can think of at the moment. But I'm sure as soon as I post this I'll think up more. :)
EDIT: Kindergarten Cop - I learned the difference between boys and girls from this one :D

I also might as well add Atlantis-The Lost Empire to the list. It was very mind-blowing as an animated movie.
Also, I think Hollywood Homicide could be added in my book, though I haven't seen it yet. Its very unlikely to at least break even and only A.O. Scott (The New York Times) and Ebert & Roper liked Harrison Ford (as well as Ford himself, believe it or not!) as a comedian.
Heaven forbid that The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Lara Croft-Tomb Radier in The Cradle of Life and Pirates of the Carribean will have to be added to this list, due to poor reviews and domestic box office gross.

Toys - Robin Williams as a toymaker. Funny and touching, especially Joan Cusack as William's sister, who is "special" in more ways than one.
The Good Son - A "Bad Seed" update with Macualy Culkin, swearing, smoking, and killing just for kicks. Of course what really made this movie was Macauly being dropped off a cliff at the end, something everyone's dreamed of at one point or another
The Brady Bunch Movie - It was a sleeper hit at the time, but apparently Paramount doesn't it's so great anymore with the recent crappy barebones DVD release.
Ernest Goes To Jail - My favorite Ernest movie, as well as the last decent one. The series went downhill starting with "Scared Stupid".
Child's Play 2 - The best sequel in the franchise, and everyone considers it to be crap.
A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master - See above.
Straight Talk - Dolly Parton as a radio shrink. It was funny, but no one ever seems to notice it.

Before I give my list, a quick word about Deep Blue Sea. Yes, the black guy did make it, but it was the wrong black guy. I mean, let's be real for a minute. If you have Samuel L. Jackson and LL Cool J in the same movie, and one is going to die, which one bites the dust? Everyone think about that for a minute.......
Thought it out? I bet you picked the same guy I did. Now go watch the movie.
My pick for a forgotten movie is The Naked Gun. It is one of the funniest movies ever made. Leslie Neilsen was hilarious, and the supporting cast was flawless. Plus, you get to see O.J. Simpson get the crap beaten out of him. It also includes the funniest rendition of The National Anthem.

Gremlins 2: The New Batch did about a tenth the business of the first one, and I thought it was ten times better. Go figure.
That's probably the big one, and the only here that people might recognize. All the others I might name are too obscure.
When I think of a "movie that people (and time) forgot)," I think of a movie like The Island at the Top of the World. In case you don't know about this little gem (and if you do, my hat is off to you), this was a Walt Disney movie from about 1974. It was a Jules Verne-type adventure set in 1907 about an English millionaire, an American archaeologist, a French airship captain, and an Eskimo searching the arctic for the millionaire's son, who had gone off to search for a semi-mythical polar island "where the whales go to die." They stumble on a lost colony of Vikings who have been cut off from the rest of the world and survive on a lush, geothermally heated island.
Thirty years later and the special effect stand up pretty well (even the model work mostly stands up -- about as well as in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea) -- and there are some luscious matte paintings. The story turns into a dumb, repetitive chase picture with boring cardboard characters, but that's no worse than any $400 million blockbuster that we get today. And Maurice Jarre composed a really nifty score for it.
And yet Disney has totally abandoned it. They will put Gus or the Computer Wore Tennis Shoes or The Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again out on DVD. But this one they totally ignore. It was released a few years ago (and I bought a copy), but it was done by Anchor Bay. I don't get the Disney Channel, but if anyone has ever sighted this movie on it, I would be floored.

hmm definitely Ghostbusters 2, love it, almost as much as the first one. I liked AI a lot too. Kindda liked the cheesiness of Daredevil, which was severely bashed in France (I don't know anyone among my friends who enjoyed it). Evolution definitely counts, as most people don't think much of it, while I, for one, love the nostalgic Ghostbusters feel of it. MI2, so cheesy it's enjoyable.
One question for those who mentioned Blade Runner though. Does it really count?? I know so many people who consider it one of their favorite movies ever that it doesn't seem like a "forgotten" or unpopular movie at all...

Buckaroo Banzai
http://www.figmentfly.com/bb/Images/ADVBUCKA-box_hires_dvd.jpg
The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension is a film directed by W.D. Richter, written by Earl Mac Rauch and starring Peter Weller, John Lithgow, Ellen Barkin, Jeff Goldblum, Christopher Lloyd, and Clancy Brown. The film was released in 1984 and did not do well at the box office. Since that time the film has achieved cult status as a sci-fi film that doesn't spoon feed the audience the story and feels like one part of a much longer adventure.
A movie too cool for this dimension IMO.

Lemesee here;
Equilibrium
I hadn't heard of this until the latest Christian Bale hoopla. When it came out, I was without internet and when I was rooting for Bale, it was when Reign of Fire came out. I recently bought this and was pleasantly surprised. Rotten on Rottentomatoes. I really like it. I told all my friends about it.
Reign of Fire
There had been talks of Darren Arnofsky's Batman: Year One and a lot of Bat-fans I knew wanted a guy named Christian Bale. I hadn't heard of him. Then I went with a friend to see a movie called Reign of Fire. It starred a guy named Christian Bale! Unlike many people (probably people on this board), I enjoyed this. Thought it was good.
Guyver 2: Dark Hero
My brother and I watched this on UPN one time and it was, interesting. Cheesy, yet cool. Starring Solid Snake and X-Men (movie) writer David Hayter! I also read the manga for Guyver also.
Supergirl
It wasn't that bad. Not really all that good either. I was surprised when I found this showing on ABC Family.
Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines
I'm a huge Terminator geek and when I saw this the other day, it wasn't as bad as I heard. I really enjoyed it. Also, this would lead into a potential T4 but it would only have one way to go.
Jingle All The Way
I loved it when I was younger. Arnold as a superhero, sort of.
Mm hmm.

Well, I posted that message over a year ago.
For what I think now, I still think that Atlantis: The Lost Empire is such an underated movie. And I agree with that guy who mentioned Oliver and Company, that definatly deserves more than it's credited for (the crappy animation IS the reason why I LOVE it, and the voices and songs were also awesome).

I believe I saw part of that movie on cable. I too was impressed by the effects work for a pre-Star Wars film. However, it seemed awfully static and dull and I tuned out after a while.
I suppose you're also a fan of other older effects heavy adventure epics like Journey to the Center of the Earth, Fantastic Voyage, etc.
Good Ol' Batmanuel!

Ahhh, another long dead thread comes back to life. At least it's an interesting one.
One I can add to the ones I previously posted is "Fear Strikes Out." It's an Anthony Perkins movie about the true story of Boston Red Sox player Jim Peirsall, who suffered a nervous breakdown (nervous collapse may be more appropriate). It's an excellent story and is very well acted. Karl Malden was especially great as Jim's demanding father.
