A while back, somebody did a thread about cartoon titles shared by more than one studio.

Well, I don't know if this one was mentioned (it may have been; I dunno) but "Busy Buddies" is the title of both a 1956 Tom and Jerry cartoon (made at MGM) and a 1960 Jeepers and Creepers cartoon (made at Paramount). AND, if that isn't enough, "Busy Buddies" is a title also shared with a live-action studio. There is a 3 Stooges short (made at Columbia) in which Moe & Larry enter Curly into a cow-milking contest to earn enough money to save their diminuitive cafe. And the title of the short is (you guessed it) "Busy Buddies"!

While we're on the topic of the Stooges (but not straying too far from animation), here are some other Stooges shorts that have "cartoon titles"...

"Sock-a-Bye Baby" (1942) - also the title of a 1934 Popeye cartoon.

"Ants in the Pantry" (1936) - also the title of a 1970 Ant & Aardvark short.

"Oil's Well That Ends Well" (1958) - also the title of a 1968 episode of Wacky Races.

Who currently has the rights to The Pink panther/Ant & The Aardvark shorts? Does Boomerang have them?

i always wondered why CN never aired them on The Acme Hour anymore...

According to the FAQ at www.cartoonresearch.com MGM has rights to them. I guess CN got tired of paying to use these shorts.

This was also the title of one of the made-for-TV Popeyes from 1960-62.

Yep, MGM (aka MGM/UA) owns the rights to the DePatie-Freleng cartoon library, inherited from their purchase of the dying United Artists back in the early 1980's. In actuality they own the cartoons... sort of!!! Ownership is split in a couple of different configurations between MGM and David DePatie and the late great Friz Freleng.

Buuuuuut perversely the cartoon library does NOT include the numerous lovely Dr. Seuss TV specials they made from 1971 till D-F's demise. Also not included are the Marvel character TV shows they did ("Fantastic Four" and "Spiderwoman"). Nor some others that escape me right now.

Ifffffff Ted Turner had had the money to hold onto UA back in 1985-86 then the DePatie-Freleng toons would now be where they rightfully belong, and that's beside the Warner and MGM work of all their shared artists. Meaning... Friz Freleng, Art Davis, Bob McKimson, Sid Marcus, Gerry Chiniquy, George Gordon, Don Williams, Manny Perez, Warren Batchelder, Bob Givens, Maurice Noble etc., etc.

Actually, I think those shows were why Marvel munched up DePatie-Freleng and spit out Marvel Productions just prior to the production of the two Spider-Man shows in 1981 (of which Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends is the most fondly remembered). So, they should belong to Saban. :(
