View Full Version : Potentals: Excel Saga

Hello and welcome to this is the potental.
Yeah, I thought I’d address this issue on whether or not Excel Saga would come to Adult Swim or not. To the average anime fan, or the Otaku, Excel Saga is packed with humor throughout most of the series, poking fun and parodying other animes, and even American animation. Unfortunately this show would not do well at all with American audiences. Ratings have shown, and indicated that the average Adult Swim viewer probably watches Futurama and Family Guy. Although the anime portion is viewed by a lot of people, and out performs Letterman, Leno, Carson, and Conan, it still is being viewed mostly by fans that are new to anime, and are watching because they started watching Family Guy and decided to keep the TV on. Yes there are a lot of kids, teenagers, and adults that stay up late to get their anime, but the significant lot of fans seem to be into comedy for the most part.
Now it seems Williams Street is trying to change all that with its premiere of the Big O. They are trying to get their comedy viewers hooked on action. This is a very risky step for Williams St., but it is indeed a courageous one. New episodes of the Big O premiere August 3rd at 11:00PM. This is Adult Swim's NUMBER ONE slot. It is on the most watched Television day, at its number one hour. This is indeed a drastic change, and its result is unknown. if this succeeds, then I will admit Excel Saga's chance on Adult Swim seems much larger, but until then...it seems very unlikely.
Although the fact that the chances for newer and better action shows on Adult Swim seem to be opening up, Excel Saga is still a very unlikely anime to put in, and it would be precarious to add it into the schedule. The fans wouldn't get it. Its as simple as that. We'll just have to wait to find out.
Chances of coming to Adult Swim-----3/10

The amount of threads of Excel Saga on AS is equivalent to TMNT on CN posts... that's way too many, if you ask me.

Hey if your lucky, Matt Wilson will say it has no chance of appearing on Adult Swim. Its pretty much guarnteed then, because Williams Street reads this board and Williams Street likes to smite the great Matt Wilson. That is a formidable combination.

Hmm..*screaming* Hey Williams Street people! Matt Wilson says Excel Saga won't be on AS. You know what to do. Make it happen people.

Williams Street does like to prove us wrong alot.
Us: Cowboy Bebop will never air on Cartoon Network.... NEVER!
WS: Oooh yeeaaaah....
Us: They should air Futurama, but that's just impossible.
WS: Oooh yeeaaaah....
Us: Family Guy should air on Adult Swim! But that just can't happen for ALOT of different reasons.
WS: Ooooh yeeeaaaah....
Us: They should air Trigun! But, that's just wishful thinking...
WS: Oooh yeeaaaaah....
Us: They should air ADV Film stuff... like Neon Genesis on Toonami! LOL! I'm just kidding, I know that could never happen.
WS: Oh yeeeaaah...
And so forth. Excel Saga and Great Teacher Onizuka seem to be the next in line that do infact seem impossible to air.
With all they've done it's pretty much impossible to say "never" in terms of a Willy Street block.

That is so true. I don't think people would even be surprised at this point.
But the point is, Excel Saga will never be on Adult Swim. Never ever ever ever. So give up on your foolis wishful thinking.
(There I said it! Now we should expect on AS in a couple months! ^_^ )

Thank you, now I won't have to wait until December to beg and plead to Santa for it. *stocks up on VHS tapes to get prepared*

You're right Sora. Excel Saga would just never air on Adult Swim. It's just too weird, so I think we should just give up. :D

Just like DBZ will never be on Adult Swim. Right? :sound of crickets chirping: Wait does that mean stuff we hope for will nevr be on AS? Then, I hope all Spamco products come on AS and Home Movies is cancelled.

I'm not sure about that. I mean my father and StepMom were never the people who like weird things. They also arn't very keen on Anime or Animated movies in general. Yet they absolutley LOVE the Excel Saga.

Things we'll never get:
Haibane Renmei
NieA_7
Texhnolyze
FLCL
actually, I'm pretty serious about the first two. if NieA and Haibane ever see tv, it'll be Tech TV or Anime Network. The other two have a snowballs chance.

Don't count out FLCL (a.k.a. Fooly Cooly) just yet. Didn't WS mention some interest in the show one time about a few weeks back on one of their "black-and-white" cards?

You don't know that, ;)
That's right, I used an emoticon. And it felt horrible.
EDIT: Oh, I get it. You were using the reverse psychology motif. Ignore my inane comments.
As for Excel Saga, I want it on Adult Swim more then anyone, but the topic has been done to death. I think it's perfect for AS. The problem in my opinion, is acquiring the rights. And FLCL definitely needs to get it's ass over to Adult Swim.

read the thread, we're using reverse psychology on the williams street guys to get them to buy shows.
anyway, FLCL is known to be in consideration by WS, both due to an interview with Sean Atkins where says he likes the show, and due to an e-mail to Synchpoint, the US distributor of FLCL where they said that FLCL was inconsideration, but it wouldn't be picked up unless FLCL had good sales on it's own first or something like that IIRC.

Shhhh! It won't work if you MENTION that it's reverse psychology, because people who work at WS read the board, and if they realize you're using reverse psychology, maybe they'll just screw over any chance of getting the show just to show you off or something. Well, it could happen.

Since when was it okay to kill cute girls for comedic value?

Probability of Excel Saga: 20 percent, unless ADV eases up on the no editing trip again, and they run the Japanese broadcast version of episode 26.
Probability of Puni Puni Poemi: .000000000000000000000000000001 percent, because to edit would gut it, and unedited, Williams Street might be facing jail time for running it.

Well, for the uneducated, what exactly is Puni Puni Poemi. Is that the opening or some kind of sign for the last educated. And when I say uneducated (in this matter anyway) I mean me.

Well, for the uneducated, what exactly is Puni Puni Poemi. Is that the opening or some kind of sign for the last educated. And when I say uneducated (in this matter anyway) I mean me.
Puni Puni Poemi is the magical girl spin-off/alternate universe story of Excel Saga (sorta like Magical Project S is to Tenchi), except it's totally the brain child of Shinichi Watanabe, and it's about as blantant with it's sexuality as the new Ren and Stimpy (10-year-old, lesbian, barely hidden/offscreen action, with some fetish thrown in toward the end, though that's not the sole content of the show at all, because it also lampoons magical girl stereotypes), but it's meant to be a direct satire shot at magical girl series and hentai series, and it does pretty good job of slamming both genres, and the world's view Japanese Culture as result of this content on the whole. It's pretty offensive content wise, but it's not stupid, because it's pretty sharp with it's satire and parody. It's also rediciously hyper in tone with mile a second referencing, satiring and punning. However, the near-pornographic sexual content makes it unairable almost anywhere, and the fact is, is that content used to mock the geniunely hardcore stuff, so axing that stuff would also cuts jokes.
Personally, I'm surprised ADV has the conjones to release it. I know CN won't have the conjones to run it unless they hack it to death.
Seriously, only straight hentai has a worse shot of making it to CN than Poemi.

06-22-2003, 06:51 PM
Oh, so that's what Puni Puni Poemi is. Never would have expected it to be a magical girl parody/near hardcore porn type of anime. Maybe we should stop talking about the Excel Saga for a while and wait for CN to mention something about it before there's another "EXCEL SAGA NEEDS TO BE ON ADULT SWIM" topic posted.
