Friend and I have this debate going on, and I was hoping someone here could help. Who was the first openly gay superhero? I think they were Sailors Uranus and Neptune (a.k.a. Haruka and Michiru), who made thier comic (manga) debut in 1994. My friend however, is not so sure.

Alpha Flight's Northstar first appeared in 1979, although I'm not sure exactly when he came out of the closet.

Flash villain the Pied Piper, but again I'm not sure if that predates 1994.

It was implied that Watchmen's Captain Metropolis and Hooded Justice were gay (1986).

The pre-Crisis Element Lad from the Legion of Superheroes was believed to be gay, but the current continuity makes no reference to this. (he's also deceased).

The Authority's Apollo and Midnighter are a homosexual couple raising an infant girl, but this story is fairly recent.

And of course we could argue whether or not the Rawhide Kid was ALWAYS gay, but I'd rather not get into that debate.
