Hi! :D
I have a question about the Lupin show that came before the one that AS has; I heard it was more of a serious/drama type of thing, is that true? Or is it just like the one we're watching only with the characters meeting each other for the first time, etc.?

I haven't seen it, but I did hear it's a lot more serious and dramatical then the Second Series. Also, it dosen't throw all the main characters into the story if they do not need to be there (For example, I heard Zenigata is only a few of the episodes, usually the ones where he is an intergal part of the story). You could check out the Funimation DVD's of the Lupin the III movies, which are based of the first seasons to see what kind of humor quality they have to the original if you want.
Didn't Miyazaki have something to do with the first Lupin?

According to JeffTMB, it's much more serious and comedy is very low. Zenigata is actually a threat to Lupin and not some comedic fellow. I heard that it is more accurate to the manga. I don't know about the 2nd series and how accurate it is to the manga, but maybe JeffTMB or Lupin the Wolf can help you?

Yes, he did.

Didn't Miyazaki have something to do with the first Lupin?
yes he certainly did. he co-directed almost every episode. and of course soon afterwards got his first theatrical feature The Castle of Cagliostro.

Then the episodes must be brilliant (not that the second season wasn't ;) Miyazaki directed some of my favorite anime's and movies : Princess Mononoke , Spirited Away , and the much ignored Blood Reign the mystery of the stone or something . Does anyone know where we can get these much talked about episodes from Season 1 ? I'm getting Castle Of Cagliostro so that might help ..
Yet another argument for the CN getting the first Lupin. Be associated with a cult icon!

I think there are fansubs around, but Pioneer has already licensed the first series. They just chose the second series to be dubbed, since it's the most popular Lupin series.

Well it wasn't too long ago when CN didn't even have the "feudal era" in there, so they ARE making progress. :p

Arbitrary facts about the first Lupin III show
-Lupin's coat is green. (In the third series it's pink)
-Fujiko's a red-head. (In the third series, she's blonde)
-Mr. X (from The Return of Lupin III) was a re-accuring character
-There are only 23 episodes, as apposed to the second series, which has 155 episodes.
-Goemon wasn't introduced introduced in the sixth episode.
Correct me if any of these facts are wrong.

From what I know, the first seven episodes were not done by Miyazaki. They tried to follow the manga, but they felt that wasn't a successful approach and opted for Miyazaki to come in and handle the rest of the episodes, changing the series to a more light-hearted approach.
It's good stuff, believe me.
Although I still prefer the second series.

He directed 2 episodes in the 2nd series episode #145 Albatross Wings of Death & #155 Farewell Beloved Lupin. Farewll beloved Lupin is like anouther Cagliostro. The heorine Maki, is a dead ringer for Claisse.(they have the same seiyu Sumi Shimato). Also the robots from Laputa make an appearance

Hmm, I was under the impression he directed a few more from season 2. Both episodes you mentioned are available on Streamlines Lupin IIIs Greatest Capers video release. I picked it up years ago at a Mom/Pop video store that was having a going out of business sale, it introduced me to Lupin and I shortly there after I bought Castle of Cagliostro. Also on the Streamline tape they have a different opening sequence from the ones I have seen from season II, is it from later in the season? Also, did anyone pick up the first Lupin III manga release from Tokyo Pop? good stuff.

I've got the entire first series in fansubs on video.
First off, the series is much more violent. I'm not talking Ninja Scroll violent here, but a lot more people get shot/killed/whatever than the second series.
There are two different OPs for the series.
Lupin has a lot of henchmen. Many of which die for him. There is lots of talk of Lupins "organization".
The first series has not been licensed in the US yet.....so technically you're not outright violating copyright buying them.

Correct me if any of these facts are wrong.
Fujiko is a brunette in the 3rd series ("Lupin the Third Part III"), much like she is in the "Golden Legend of Babylon" which uses the 3rd series' style.
Mr. X's first reappearance doesn't occur until "Return of Lupin the Third." He only showed up in the First Series the one time. He will return later in this series (Part II) once or twice more yet. He does not appear in "Lupin the Third Part III."
As an aside, "Part III" has 50 episodes. If you were let down by "Golden Legend of Babylon," you will probably feel let down by "Part III."
Goemon was introduced in one episode as an assassin whose target was Lupin, but he doesn't join the gang until two episodes later.
Miyazaki co-directed (with Isao Takahata of "Grave of the Fireflies" fame) episodes 7 through 23 of "Lupin the Third" (Part I).
The first six episodes of the series were directed by another individual whose name I do not currently recall.
Pioneer has not announced any Lupin acquisitions outside of the first 52 episodes of "Lupin Part II," but given hints on their website (images from quite late in the series), I believe they have it in its entirety. Not to mention the rumors that they have far more than what they've announced, it's entirely possible that they have the First Series/Part I.
Did I miss anything?

They chose to release the second series first because it's the longest and the most memorable.

Eh, FUNimation is not bad, it's just the TV series aren't as comedic as the TV counterpart. FUNi chose to make their scripts serious and accurate, Pioneer decided to spice up the dialogue in the TV series. Each to his own.

News to me. Although I hope its true. If not, I'm sure they at least have the option for the rest. Plus I believe there are a few more movies Funi hasn't gotten the rights to, so hopefully Pioneer will beat them to the (Monkey) punch.
It would be nice if Animeigo gave up the rights to Gold of Babylon or at least got Pioneer's dub crew to take a crack at it. I think they could actually turn that into an amusing movie.
Anyway, I'm a little late to the game, and there isn't much on the first season that Lupin the Wolf hasn't already said. One little tidbit that hasn;t been mentioned yet is that Monkey Punch has stated that the first series was the only animated Lupin he felt captured the spirit of the manga. I'd be forced to agree, but personally I agree with Matt. Though it doesn't have the first series' style, the second series more than makes up for it by moving the series in a more comedic direction and establishing the characters as they've come to be known.
Watching the early first series episodes after being exposed to the second is kind of a shock. They are much darker, more gritty, and slower paced. Zenigata is a very stern and serious character initially, a far cry from the comedic foil (crapcrapcrap!) he would later become. As the series moves on, it does lighten up quite a bit (think of the darker episodes in the second series for a good idea of what I mean).
As for the movies, I wouldn't say they follow either series. They tend to be on a much grander scale. More serious than series 2, but usually with the more "fun" characterizations (Zenigata, for instance, has the same role as he does in series 2). Lupin is a long and evolving show, and I suggest everyone who enjoys the AS airings check out some of the other stuff that is out there.

Funi seems to still be finding its legs as a serious player in the domestic anime industry (the name doesn't help them any). Despite the differences between the show and the movies, Pioneer's production seems to have a lot more care put into it. Just look at the dubs. The pronunciations in Funi's dub still aren't right. Some of the cast are pretty good (Lupin and Jigen sounds fairly similar to their Pioneer counterparts, which gives the series a nice continuity between companies). Others like Fujiko are fairly unmemorable, and Zenigata just doesn't sound right at all to me, especially since Pioneer did him so right. I would like to see Pioneer's crew dub one of the more recent movies to get a real comparison between the two companies.

True, although the Pioneer dub has flaws. They pronounced Goemon's name wrong.

I really just prefer Pioneer's dub, and I'm relieved they're doing all three TV shows. I love their sense of humor, and to me, the show would be incomplete without it. And I just wish one company did all of the Lupin III dubs, and since I prefer Pioneer, I would have liked it better if they had done the movies. Plus I really resent FUNimation.

True dat. The VAs must have some trouble with his name, because it never seems to be pronounced the same way.
What does Goemon's voice sound like in the FUNi dub? Fujiko in the FUNi dub sounds similar to the Pioneer one, or different?
Fujiko sounds very generic, and as I recall she doesn't emote very well. Goemon sounds decent enough I guess. Not terribly noticeable, good or bad. I've never been particularly impressed by any of his VAs, to tell the truth.
Well, Pioneer is coming out with the Mystery of Mamo dub, so you could compare that.
Yeah, but that movie isn't much of a departure from series 2. I'd like to see what Pioneer does with one of the modern movies, with their updated art and more action oriented tone.

To Matt Wilson:
I think it's a safe theory that they have all three series, but Pioneer (not the Japanese press, or whoever) has never officially announced the acquisition of anything but "Lupin Part II" episodes 1-52 and the "Secret of Mamo" feature. Do you have a link to an official statement otherwise?
To j32885:
Regarding the review of "Bye Bye Liberty-Close Call!" on that link you provided, Lupin does not have 300 mil in the bank, but rather he is in debt $300,000,000, thanks to his little floozy maxxing out all of his credit cards. Of course, this is just a mistranslation by the guy who did the site. He isn't operating from anything but a raw Japanese tape. These mistakes happen ;)
As far as your other questions go, here's who is distributing what currently:
Manga Video / The Castle of Cagliostro (movie 2) / DVD+VHS
Pioneer / "The World's Most Wanted" (Part II TV-Volume 1) / DVD
Pioneer / "Love Heist" (Part II TV-Volume 2) / DVD
Pioneer / "Family Jewels" (Part II TV-Volume 3) / DVD [out in early July]
Pioneer / "Thieves' Paradise" (Part II TV-Volume 4) / DVD [out in October?]
Pioneer / "Lupin the Third The Movie - The Secret of Mamo" (movie 1) / DVD [late July]
FUNimation / "Secret of Twilight Gemini" (TV special '96) / DVD+VHS+edited DVD+edited VHS
FUNimation / "Pursuit of Harimao's Treasure" (TV special '95) / DVD
FUNimation / "Dragon of Doom" (TV special '94) / DVD
FUNimation / "Voyage to Danger" (TV special '93) / DVD
AnimEigo / "Rupan the Third: The Fuma Conspiracy" (OAV '87) / DVD [due out in stores in August?; available on AnimEigo.com now]
AnimEigo / "Rupan the Third: Legend of the Gold of Babylon" (movie 3) / DVD [unknown due date; maybe next year sometime?]
What has NOT been *acquired* for American release:
Episode Zero: First Contact (2002 TV special)
Return of Pycal/The Magician Lives (2002 OAV)
Alcatraz Connection (2001 TV special)
Bye Bye Liberty - Close Call! (1989 TV sp)
Steal Napoleon's Dictionary! (1990 TV sp)
Riddle of the Hemingway Papers (1991 TV sp)
From Russia With Love (1992 TV sp)
EVERYTHING else may or may not have been acquired by another company except maybe "Lupin the Third Part III" and "Lupin the Third Part I" assuming Pioneer did not acquire them.
Getting an American voice actor to properly pronounce Goemon "Go-AY-mohn" is like pulling teeth.

I know that sometimes shows go on rants, and they can be obnoxious at times, but I fail to see why anyone would cancel a show over them...
...unless you meant "ratings?"
The First Series *was* cancelled for poor ratings. The show began with an adult aim and ended with a more youth-oriented one: an attempt to boost the ratings. Given that the show only lasted for 23 episodes, I guess not. Reportedly, it was *going* to be a full 26-episode season.
The series on AS lasted for 155 episodes. I'm not exactly sure what you mean by it not looking too good.

Heh heh...I can't escape, can I?
I have been working on a fairly major update with 2 new anime reviews completed ("Dragon of Doom" and "Bye Bye Liberty-Close Call!") and two more ("Alcatraz Connection" and "Episode Zero: First Contact") in the works. They'll all be uploaded when I'm through. I've also been editing the various pages across the site to look a little bit cleaner. The update should be coming soon, but I can't be certain when.
You don't notice a difference between the japanese voice, and the dub?
Haha, I certainly do.
But did you notice that Fujiko's JAPANESE First Series voice and her JAPANESE Second Series voice are two completely different people?
I watched the fansubs of both and didn't notice a thing until the credits came up on the First Series episode I saw, which credited Fujiko as "Yukiko Nikaido" instead of "Eiko Masuyama." I did a double-take. I had to rewind the tape and read the kanji just to be certain.
Also, Jigen, yes FUNimation does have the rights to "Walther P38" and "Dead or Alive." However, when Walther comes out it will be titled "Island of Assassins." It will probably be FUNi's next Lupin release, but that's just a guess.

The original manga is quite comedic, but when the same stories appear in the first TV series they have all of their comedic value removed.
A good example would be the chapter of Zenigata sending Lupin to prison (episode 4 in the anime).
The first episode pretty much reminded me of a James Bond movie.
