View Full Version : New comedy shows you'd like to see...

While I like the current programing, I'd like to see:
New "Family Guy" episodes. Nothing is so special about the animation that it couldn't be done in flash. Hopefully Seth McFarland hasn't given up on the concept...
"The Tick" as a new series. The original comics were hilarious and "adult" (I loved the running gag of how Tick and Aurther always accidently made themselves look gay.) The Tick hasn't had much sucess on TV, but AS could be wear the show's niche is. The only thing is that if Captain Sturdy got picked up, the show would be redundant.
Any more ideas?

New Family Guy episodes are my biggest hope at this point as far as new comedy goes.

Definitely new episodes of Family Guy and/or Futurama. I wouldn't mind new episodes of Baby Blues, The Oblongs, and Mission Hill either. Plus, there's The Venture Brothers, but most people know the deal there. ;)

-New episodes of Family Guy. (Futurama will NEVER have new episodes. EVER.)
-A series by a Slave Labor artist. (Liberty Meadows and SQUEE! would make decent translations, but something original would blow my mind)
-More WS shows. (Venture Brothers is accomplishing this, but I'd like even more)
-Sam & Max, with possible new episodes.
-Party Wagon. (I don't give a crap if it's going to CCF. Adult Swim, NOW!)
-3 South.
-Something new by Soup 2 Nuts.

If you like The Tick, watch Venture Bros. It's written by Chris McCulloch, writer from that show, and a couple of stories are being written by BEN ENLAND, CREATOR OF THE TICK. That's the closest you'll ever get, I'm afraid.
As for NEW comedy shows. Look at the avatar. LOOK AT IT.

Add Sam & Max and Clone High to my list. I don't have a clue who has the rights to Sam & Max, but Clone High is Viacom so I see no chance in hell. I await Clone High on Comedy Central since I know it's not coming back to MTV. :(

I'm afraid the closest you'll get to A Sam and Max show is to play the new Xbox Game starring the duo (coming out soon) Matt.
As for new shows, probably another Willams Street Show (A show like Sealab 2021 where they use new animation over old animation, but over something other then a Hanna Barbera toon, like say a Toonami Show, even though that wouldn't happen) and the United States premiere of The Aquaman and Friends Show.

Sam & Max already HAD a show. It was a Nelvana production and while it was largely aimed at children, it still managed to be decent. While it would be tough, (New episodes would be even tougher) Sam & Max is a FOX castaway, and we've seen three already. (Ripping Friends, Futurama, Family Guy)
As for who has the rights to the dynamic duo, I'm assuming Nelvana has them at the moment. If not, then FOX or the creator himself holds the rights.
EDIT: Matt Wilson says it better than I do in the post below.

Diana, you're out of the loop.
Purcell has the rights to his own characters. He can make a new TV show if he wanted. He simply doesn't have the rights to the original 14 episodes Nelvana produced. Cartoon Network could purchase those from Nelvana if they wanted, Nelvana has no beef with CN. Those episodes would get a very tame TV-PG (very small cursing.. damn is muttered a couple of times, and "My God!") since the show was tamed for FOX KIDS. A new series would definitely be TV-14-LV.
The Xbox game is no more. Lucasarts is working on a brand new game that's PC-only, a 3D point-n-click game called Sam & Max 2: Freelance Police.

Actually, I knew they had a show on FOX Kids a few years ago, I was talking about a new show with enough mature content to be on Adult Swim. Though if the old FOX kids show took say, the Ripping Friends spot (If it ever has one again) I wouldn't be complaining.

With Lucasarts relaunching Sam and Max, now is the perfect time to capitalize on that and start up a new series for adults.

The Venture Brothers is a show I would love to see, but I've been out of the loop for a while now. Could you fill me in, or will I be banished to using the search button?
Sam and Max would be brilliant, based solely on the one episode of the Fox show I saw, and the classic Lucas Arts game.

Many thanks.
I played a demo of the Sam and Max game a LONG time ago (I was probably around 7 years old at the time), and I remember it being pretty entertaining. Sounds like it could make an interesting new AS series if done well. :)

I was there a few nights ago trying to refresh my memory so I could find out if I ever watched the show on FOX. I still have no clue. I remember it being there and I think I may have watched it. Possibly. I have the worst memory on the planet.

If I won the Powerball I would buy the rights to Freakazoid and release a DVD, maybe have a brand-new film released in 3,000 theaters, which would have its broadcast premiere on Adult Swim.

Odd how these "New Comedy Show" threads are usually just "list old shows you wish would come back on the air" threads. Well, I guess if we were good enough to make show ideas then we would be down in Atlanta, instead of here.
All previously listed shows would be great, but something that has always been a dream of mine would be for a web comic to make it onto the small screen. For that to happen would make them legitamite, in a sense. I know the folks over at Penny-Arcade had a pilot at one time, but PvP seems more likely. And I'm not discounting a High Score series.
But that's just a pipe dream. Maybe a few years from now, something like this could happen, but for now, a Geek can dream.

On that note, GPietrash, I'd like to make one suggestion that has been mentioned before: Homestar Runner. If you ask me, it's just so...Adult Swim.

I enjoy Homestar Runner, I really do, but I don't know how well it would work out on television. It's just that the interactive parts and the humor is something that just makes it perfect for the internet. They feel the same way too. In an interview I did with them for my school paper a couple of weeks ago, they pretty much said the same. They prefer the internet to tv.

I'd really love to see a comeback by the Critic. A great comedy with an even greater voice actor! Oh, and I s'pose an animated series of Spy Vs. Spy would be nice to see as well, eh?

I think you have a good idea ,GPietrash, but I would suggest something that could be a bridge between the comedy and action portions, such as Strange Candy, MegaTokyo, Freefall, or Sluggy Freelance.

I still think Excel Saga would be a nice bridge between comedy and action, despite what people say about it being "too Japanese."

-A new, original show by Evan Dorkin. Eltingville: TAS may be dead, but Evan NEEDS a weekly animated series (even if it's done in flash).
-Have Matt Groening create something for Adult Swim. He's been quoted as saying that there are three projects he wants to try on cable (where he'll have more creative freedom): an animated series about pirates, an animated miniseries about the rise and fall of a punk rock band, and an animated series based off "Life in Hell".
-I agree with Matt Wilson as well. Sam and Max are ripe for a comeback, and Adult Swim will be their ticket to stardom.
-New Ripping Friends. John K. has said in interviews he's aware how watered down he made the series and wants another shot at it so he can make it more warped.
-A WS series using recycled anime for fodder.

Second.

Second.
Excel Saga is good, but some stuff would definetely have to be edited.
As for Sam & Max, I think it would end up as a TV-14-DLV. As for the original 14, I'm with Matt, a mild TV-PG.

While I doubt Cartoon Network would offer the most creative freedom for Groening, a Life In Hell animated series sounds about right, and from what I've seen of the comics, would slip by with a TV-14-D.

New episodes of Family Guy: Hey this is the main reason why Adult Swim is beating Leno, Letterman, and other late-night shows.
those 5 new episodes of Mission Hill: I remember those creators wanted to make 5 new episodes of Adult Swim, so let him.
Aquaman and Friends Happy Hour: Needs to be in the U.S. on Adult Swim
Life is Hell: Adult Swim needs an Oeiginal series from Matt Groening

Alright, what I'd like to see:
New episodes of Futurama and Family Guy. (I know this is an absurd wish, but if I had omnipotent power, I'd make it happen.
A new Williams Street show. I've been dying for another one of those.
I wouldn't mind new episodes of The Oblongs, Baby Blue and Mission Hill, but the thought doesn't elate me.
As for japanese comedies, FLCL and Excel Saga would be awesome.
I guess I don't have anything that profound or innovative to add to the conversation. Same old typical concepts.
-New Ripping Friends. John K. has said in interviews he's aware how watered down he made the series and wants another shot at it so he can make it more warped.
Oh god. No Ripping Friends. John K. should stay thirty yards away from Adult Swim at all times.
Aquaman and Friends Happy Hour: Needs to be in the U.S. on Adult Swim
Have you actually seen it? All I know about the show is that it stars Aquaman and is in Spanish. Is it actually adult? Who made it? The show seems to be an enigma.

Actually, Groening once said that he wanted a Life in Hell series on HBO. We know that Groening can get away with ALOT of stuff on HBO than Fox.

I know three day old thread, thats not that old to bring back to life.
I agree with all those who suggested Homestar Runner. I be happy if we could just get StrongBad E-Mail shorts. Another good online comic would be 8-Bit, but they might have to update the entire look a bit.

Matt has a point. There's a difference between what you do with MS Paint and post on a free Internet space to be viewed for free by at the most a few thousand people and something that will be viewed by tens of thousands of people and it making a profit off of sponsorship. They can't use material that's trademarked by Squaresoft.

I knew that they would need permission from Squaresoft first, but hey it was a dream. They could get it, but it probably require money which would be out of the question.

And ATHF. It would be like a comic that used backgrounds from video games but the main characters are unique sprites.

I've never seen Sam and Max, so I can't really comment there, but I think most of these ideas are pretty good. I can't think of anything remotely plausible that hasn't been mentioned yet; I'd like to see just about anything by the Zuckers (Airplane, Police Squad, the Naked Gun series). Granted, their only TV series (Police Squad) lasted only 6 episodes, but it led to 3 movies and well over 90% of the votes on jumptheshark.com for it are Never Jumped. I think if they were to ever make a foray into animation, this would be the place. Plus, I think their style of humor would work well here.

Of all the net "comics" out there, High Score and Homestar Runner are probably the two best geared for television in my opinion, mainly because both are already built around being like TV episodes (especially High Score, but I wouldn't expect anything less from Matt). If the two split a half hour, I'd be quite happy indeed. Heck, maybe the brothers chaps would even let Matt's fan Homestar episode on the air (they could even dub it).

As far the comics idea goes, the only two at the present moment that I could working as good AS material is "Life of Riley" or the classic "Foxtrot". Both of these comics have established characters and plotlines, and in the case of LOR, a dead on parody of DBZ that screams to be animated. As far as anime goes, I'd love to see Kare Kano on the block. It's a real departure from the "wacky" comedies that currently inhabit the block.

I have been to Canada a few times, and in the evening when I go to my hotel room in Canada, sometimes on the TV on one of the Canadian networks "John Callahan's Quads" is on. This show uses the same animation techniue as Home movies, and it is so funny because everyone and everything seems to be a target of humor.....just like in the Callahan strips in the paper! They even mock Callahan himself.
The problem is that I'm afraid people may end up getting upset over the program and start calling for the network to pull it, like how people always write in to papers that feature "Callahan." (Visit Callahanonline.com, you can see some of his hate mail) If you checked out the shows website, you would definitely understand this show a little more. Let's bring Quads to the US! The creator is based in Portland, so I don't see why it can't come here.
And don't count on a comeback by the Critic. Besides, Jon Lovitz was a good voice actor on the show anyway, and I can't think of anyone else to play his role.
