Since it probably won't get a talkback, I'd like to just jot down a few quick thoughts about The Crew. I have zero idea what the book is about or where its going, but Priest is writing it, ergo I am buying it. (Of course, every rule has its exception. See Xero)
As a character, Jim Rhodes has never had...well...a personality. I enjoyed him as the stand-in Iron Man because of the whole "new guy has big shoes to fill" aspect. And I liked the first few issues of War Machine because he was finally striking out on his own (and getting everyone else pissed at him). Beyond that, Jim has always been a cipher, or worse, "the black Iron Man".
In the first issue of The Crew...well, he still doesn't have much of a personality aside from being terminally angry, insulting, and depressed. But, y'know, it's still just the first issue.
The multi-panel layout on the second page was hilarious (um...tragically so, naturally). Makes me miss Quantum and Woody all the more.
I'm glad to see Jim doesn't have some post-Avengers hangup about using a gun on his enemies. It would seem hypocritical coming from a guy who used to shoot people with laser cannons. Then again, I'm also glad he didn't kill any of them. That would be too drastic a change of character for my liking.
I'm also glad that Kasper didn't have a big role in this issue. Not that I don't like him, I just don't want to be spoiled for the ending of the latest Panther arc.
While I'm sure everyone else saw it coming a mile away, the "Marcy" bit with the cop at the end caught me by surprise, and I enjoyed the hell out of it.
I'm enjoying the street-level crime stories of Panther and this first issue, but I'm still looking forward to Falcon and Panther to appear, and for Rhodey to (assumably) get his hands on some new armor. I don't want to see the Crew fighting the Masters of Evil or anything, but I do hope the team isn't relegated to battling street gangs, mobsters, and corrupt corporations all the time.
One last thing: "Your weight or your fate"...seems to me I've heard that before. I still don't know what it means. Anyone?
