11:30 PM - SPECIAL - Captain Sturdy

Hmm...interesting name. Any more info on this special? (I didn't notice any previous info about it, but maybe I missed it or something)

Edit: Looked at the schedule again...same question for "Penguins Behind Bars".

The former will be about a superhero (or perhaps officer in the military or lord of a ship) who may or may not be sturdy. The latter will be a ground-breaking documentary about flightless marine birds of the family Spheniscidae in a maxmum-security prison.

To be honest, I have no idea. I know there was a post about it a while go by someone who seemed educatedon the topic asking when the two sketches will air, so maybe he'll know. As it is, this post is just spam.

PS: I request these two topics get merged.

I guess that is kind of odd, but what's your question?

It's pretty much impossible to try and guess what AS Specials will be about, even coupled with promos. And who knows when they wil air? I'm guessing the week before their airtime.

Hmm...July, it looks kind of boring of you ask me. Although, I'm not that interested in Big O.

Pros: Kikaider OAVs, Big O, (I'm not thrilled about either, but they're pros in general) Trigun reruns, lack of Reign
Cons: No new Williams Street shows or Home Movies, although that might not be surprising, nothing really in the comedy department sans "Captain Sturdy" and "Pidgeons Behind Bars", which sound god-awful.

PS: I request these two topics get merged.

Schhhweet!

Also, I forgot to mention, it appears that The Venture Brothers are returning arbitrarily. Does this spell series? Probably not.

God damnit. I don't think we could spell it out any more than we already have. Perhaps you should look at other Venture Bros related threads.

Wasn't Captain Sturdy from the Cartoon Cartoon Weeked in 2001?

Captain Sturdy is a cartoon cartoon pilot that kind of appealed more to adults than kids. It was about a retired superhero that must don his costume and re-enter the world-saving business when his pension is cut, only the superheroes of the future are more concerned with political correctness and lethargic business practices.

It wasn't that funny, but it wasn't bad.

As for why it's airing on Adult Swim... they're bored, I guess.

What are you talking about? All I did was make a semi-snide comment about a repeat of The Venture Brothers (ie: the pilot/special) in July. As to what you're referring to, I don't know.

As for Captain Sturdy, I remember it now, it was funny and sophisticated for a "Cartoon Cartoon", but in my opinion is a little too juvenile for Adult Swim. And yes, they're probably bored.

Thanks Matt. Hmm...I hope this isn't another "Grooveians". However, that plotline does sound pretty decent, so maybe it'll be good.

Know anything about the "Penguins Behind Bars"?

I think you misunderstood me, Matt Wilson. My comment about The Venture Brothers was rhetorical.

Theres a quick blurb about Penguisn Behind Bars somewhat down the page. Theres also two pics that I'm guessing is from the cartoon, since the book is from 1988. The page might be loading kind of slow, so, bah, here's the text and such...

Perlman and Stitzer have a new project: “Penguins Behind Bars,” a half-hour adult TV special for the Cartoon Network based on the book by Janet Perlman and Derek Lamb.

The film looks at the sleazy life inside a 1950s women's prison, featuring a cast of penguins. For the production, they created Hulascope Studio, a new company in Montreal’s Plateau district, for the Cartoon Network, in association with the NFB, who will distribute "Penguins Behind Bars" in Canada

Hmm, looks interesting, and the animation is really good, doesn't look like a Flash special (not that I have a problem with those).

Thanks Lim. Now that looks interesting. The animation almost looks squiggle vision, but maybe that's just the one picture.

BTW, did anyone else notice that at the end of July HM returns to weekdays? I can't believe my HM fanboy mind missed that.

Hmmm, the new eps of ATHF didn't last as long as i was expecting, seeing as how we were initially promised 26 episodes this year. Inu Yasha takes a break after this run. Hopefully the next time it returns they will air the rest of thier 52 episodes. And Futurama is off the schedule. Didn't see that coming, but I'm sure it will return, hopefully with the episodes Fox aired this season and maybe the ones that are apparently trapped in limbo (unless Fox plans to burn them off in the summer, which seems likely.)

Yeah, but did you notice what it replaces? Futurama. Yes...Futurama on hiatus, I'd thought I'd never see the day...

...OK, end of sarcasm. And by the way, August 1st is a Friday, not a Sunday...

EDIT: Ah, it's been corrected. Oh, and is that anime starting the block? Wow...
