View Full Version : Looks like I'm definitely not a dog person

I used to think the only worst thing you could do in the presense of a dog is run. Yet after hearing this story, it's almost like you can't win either way.

A lady with her pit bull at her feet had another lady at her house and they were talking. They were sitting across from each other in a room. Out of the blue, the pit bull just charges into the other lady and starts ripping her apart, and killed her. It also tore its owner up when she tried to stop it from attacking.

How crazy is that? I always knew pit bulls are especially dangerous, but jeez. I wonder what the other lady might have done to provoke it. Seems like she wast just sitting there, just concentrating on the conversation with the pit bull's owner. Plus it was said that the pit bull had a rather decent temperament.

Well, maybe I won't condemn all dogs. I've come across some gentle ones myself and have played with them a little. I just guess I don't see myself owning a dog ever in my lifetime.

I definetely wouldn't equate Pit Bulls with all dogs.

My mom hates the big dogs with bad reps (Doberman, Pitbull, Rottweiler). She likes small, cute dogs and big dogs that are very nice (Labrador, Golden Retriever). My dog is a Lab/Chow-Chow mix. She's got the fur of a Chow-Chow and the body of a Lab.

Don't condemn all dogs for the deeds of a few.

Yesterday as I was taking a walk around my neighborhood (we live in the foothills) I met the most gorgeous canine in the world, he looked exactly like a wolf - I almost thought he was one until I saw the collar - with big, bright yellow eyes... he was following me, so I stopped and said hello. I wanted to take him home. :p

I did say that maybe I won't condemn all dogs, and I did say that I've dealt with some dogs that have decent temperaments. I do like some dogs like beagles and dalmations. I'll tell you something cool though. I was at an animal shelter recently and I walked past a dog's cage. It came to my direction with its tail wagging, and it seemed like it would have been fun to play with. The people at the shelter said it has a sweet temperament anyway. I just have my own personal reasons for not wanting to own a dog as a pet. Yet I tend to be kind of shaky when I'm trying to walk past a stray dog.

I'm thinking of getting a license so I can carry a stun gun around with me, for when I'm walking on the street, to protect myself from any stray dogs that seem like trouble.

I didn't mention that I believe the owner is still alive. Just probably badly hurt is all.

It annoys me to no end when I see people walking dogs such as pit bulls, rottweilers, and other big aggressive looking dogs without a leash. Then the owners are going to swear up and down that the dogs don't bite. Oh what do you know? You irresponsible jerk-offs.

I have a general dislike for dogs. Odd, given my screenname/avatar choice, eh?

That is incredibly irresponsible. As the owner of two large German Shepard/Husky mixes, I would never allow them to roam free, especially around strangers. They are both very sweet dogs, but I wouldn't gamble another person's life or well-being on it. The key to being a good dog owner is to realize that these are animals, not humans, and to treat them accordingly and always anticipate the worst no matter how unlikely.

That is just a terrible story and it makes me very sad to think that people will form preconceived ideas that all dogs are vicious because of it. :(

I hate dogs. They stink, they bark constantly, and stuff like what you described happens all the time. Sure death isn't always the result but people are attacked by dogs every day. I read this somewhere but I can't remember where... if you are attacked by a dog, poke it in the eyes as hard as you can and hit/kick its um reproductive organs as hard as you can. Call it gross but I bet it works. Anyway I was just trying to share some valuable info. People would be a lot happier (and safer) if they had cats for pets instead.

Sound like me I don't care for big dogs at all. Small are another matter altoghter. I wouldn't mind owing a small dog but as for large ones I'll say no thanks.

Again as others have said, don't condemn all dogs based on the actions of a few. While I do consider myself more of a cat gal, my family did always have a dog when I grew up. We generally had either a collie, sheltie, or a border collie (I don't see any trends here, do you?). Anyway, they were always the sweetest dogs. Yeah our their current border collie does have a big bark, but he's too much of a sissy to do anything. But all the same, whenever we have company, we do pen him up just in case. You see, even though you may think your animal may not do anything, you have to take responsibility to thwart any chance of such a thing happening. It's part of being a responsible dog owner, it's the best thing for you and your dog.

Now, we had a neighbor that had a german shepard that he let loose all the time. That thing would chase us if we rode our bike past. One time my Mom had to kick it in the face to stop it from biting one of my sisters. While it was stunned, we rode off like crazy. That was the last time we were allowed to ride that way on our bikes. Mom told the owner but he said the dog was just playing, whatever. He never shut that thing up till the day it died. That's irresponsible in my book.

I love all animals, but dogs seriously annoy me. It's not them, but what humans have done to them. Most dog breeds act, for lack of a better term, mentally retarded. I esspecially hate the ones that bark and growl and go absolutely nuts when I'm just casually walking by, minding my own buisiness, nowhere near their yard! They're degenerated, lobotomized mutations of their nobile and graceful wild ancestors.

That doesn't mean I hate them, though, I'm just a cat person. It's really the owners of dogs that are a problem. I HATE when people dock their dog's ears/tails (if you aren't happy with the way an animal naturally looks, don't get one) and I hate people who put their dogs to sleep or up for adoption as soon as they start to get old (when the animals aren't even suffering from it) removing their ability to bark through surgery is also pretty barbaric, even if I do hate hearing them at night.

About dogs barking constantly, I actually think I'd rather deal with that, rather than screaming and crying babies/kids any day. I work at a health center and of course a lot of parents have to bring their kids there. I hate when they allow them to make noise and run around the place. Plus the crying is way too depressing for me. So I'd just like to see how well I do with barking dogs.

As far as cats go, I don't want to go as far as dissing dog people, but I seriously do prefer to have a cat as a pet. I'll admit that even cats have their b*tich moments, but I'd imagine that they're generally more laid back and not as lethal as dogs. Plus they're quieter, and not so high-maintenance.

Yeah well I especially hate when people carry around their dangerous looking dogs with no leash. It's like they have something to prove. They just want to look all big and bad and tough.

Removing their ability to bark? I never thought that was possible. That IS barbaric though.

By the way, it's nice to see that there are people who are with me on this subject.
