Here's a tidbit of info I got from snooping the web.
Toei (the people behind Digimon, DBZ, and a ton of other stuff) is looking overseas.
As a result of a forecast stating that Toei Animation expects to see its pre-tax profit fall in the coming year, investors have cooled to the company, causing its stock price to fall.
In the fiscal year ending in March the company saw it's pre-tax profits rise over the previous year despite previous warnings that profit would fall by as much as 19%.
Toei Animation was the first Anime production company to ever be listed on the stock exchange.
The company's stock, traded under the TSE code 4816, hit a high of aproximately 8000 yen have since fallen to the sub 6000 range, hitting a low of 5750 yes last month. The share price has now risen somewhat to 6100 yen yesterday.
In March Toei announced that it planned to start producing Anime specifically for the overseas market. [Source: ANN]
It's the last line of this that caught my attention. It used to be that anime producers barely even considdered the overseas market.

More and more anime companies are seeking US licensors or direct cash infusion now. With the R1 market being as big as it is the Japanese have decided that some US cash wouldn't be a bad thing. ADV in particular has a number of co-productions going on with anime companies.

I'm not sure if it's the same company, but isn't 4Kids getting new Ultimate Muscle episodes made? That show did well in America, but it flopped in Japan and got cancelled.

They made more episodes of Zyuranger for Saban back in 93/94.

And this is a particularly disturbing move considering the original news announcement specifically stated that the level of violence and profanity would be reduced for the U.S.'s tastes.
This is very bad because I think we'll soon see many many distributors self-censoring themselves with U.S. standards in mind.
Who knows - soon, when someone is wearing a T-shirt that says "H F I L" on it, it may just be how the show was animated in the first place, and not a US content edit...
And that is certainly a scary thought...

Even so, It would be interesting seeing what kind of shows they would make specifically for a foreign or American Audience.

No, they made more monster battles for them to use.

I never understood what was people's problem with what Funi did, I mean at least they were original (they didn't just paint over the shirts & replace verbal references with something like "heck").

But if the violence and stuff is what made it popular here in the first place...why tone it down? http://members.aol.com/kimminakochan/chicken.gif

Actually, in their latest financial report, 4Kids admitted the Fox Box isn't doing all that well. According to them, it seems viewers want less violence and more humor.

Here's a genius idea: maybe little kids want Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh!
Geez, 4Kids, take a hint. If you want good ratings, take your shows from the WB and put them on your own block. Competing with yourself = not good.

Man, Toei sure has gotten interested in this part of the contry and you can also see why, toys, Clothose(Sp?), merchindise, and even the Popular Dragonball series has made this company be like a gold mine for the US, let's hope they can creat an english site soon for the company, because that is what I'm looking at because of the news that we herd and it is listed in the stock market now.

Not reall, becuase it would just be made without the offensive material to being with, so there would have to be no censoring, so in a sence it would bu "uncut" but still toned down for US audiences.

I also wonder if this completely nixes the possiblity of Sailor Stars though. If Toei is worried about the US so much they are considering gearing content toward US standards, what are the chances of them licencing existing content that doesn't follow US standards?

DBZ is base off a manga, yet they still didn`t do a good job of the anime version. Atleast it was not as bad like sailor moon and fist of the north star.

I hope their venture in the US is a successful one. I like to see what kind of anime Toai can do in the US.
