If you remember awhile ago, I posted a news article that the United States was going to start adding color to the paper money. Well, here is an update.

“THE SOUNDNESS OF a nation’s currency is essential to the soundness of its economy. And to uphold our currency’s soundness, it must be recognized and honored as legal tender and counterfeiting must be effectively thwarted,” said Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan in prepared remarks for the ceremony at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing.

Treasury Secretary John Snow said the latest design would help maintain the U.S. currency secure worldwide. “The design we are introducing today will help us keep it that way by protecting against counterfeiting and making it easier for people to confirm the authenticity of their hard-earned money,” said Snow.

The planned redesign was announced last year. The $20 bill, the most commonly used denomination, will be the first to go into circulation, in the fall. Other large denominations, including the $100 bill and the $50 bill, are expected to follow in 2004 and 2005, respectively.

Greenspan said the average lifespan of a $20 bill is about two years, so a “high proportion” of the new twenties should be in circulation within a few years. The most significant new feature in the currency redesign will be the introduction of new subtle background colors to the predominantly green and off-white bills. While the use of colors is not a security feature, it will help consumers quickly identify the various denominations. The presentation of some buildings and portraits will also be changed.

For the $20 bill, the new design includes a faint blue eagle in the background and a metallic green eagle and shield to the right of the portrait of Andrew Jackson on the front of the note. It keeps three security features introduced in the last redesign: a faint watermark, a security thread and color-shifting ink in the lower right corner of the face of the note.

The newest redesign comes on the heels of a previous design cycle that began in 1996 and added new security features to bills. The increased availability and power of computers, printers and scanners to create good-looking fakes has heightened the potential for counterfeits in recent years..."

Not too shabby, glad it's not some rainbow color thing but has the color just slightly in. Can't wait to see the rest of the bills..

I was expecting them to use a lot more color, Euro-style. I like this design, but I wouldn't mind seeing a bit more color in it, either.

Is counterfeiting still really a problem since they introduced the new twenties? Maybe they're trying to prevent it before it happens. That begs the question, though, will they have to change it every few years to keep counterfeiters from getting "used" to the designs?

I think it looks good, too. The US should have switched to coloured money a long time ago. Green gets boring pretty quickly. :)

(Gotta love Canadian Monopoly money!)

Looks good. Though I could have sworn that they changed the $20 bill a while ago anyway.

Love it! I've personally always been quite jealous of European currency and such. They always seemed to take so much more care and a bigger interest in it. Having artisans and such on their currency, having it colored, that's pretty cool if you ask me. I love our currency, I mean, I'm so used to green money....and thankfully this is still basically that same color, but a lot better with that extra bit of color.

Looks good! Not so plain anymore. I once had a U.S. $50 bill and it looked kinda fake to me. Way too much white in it. Looked like play money. :p A bit of color makes this look more interesting and will no doubt help to reduce counterfeiting.

Now they just need to get into U.S. heritage a little more than just putting presidents on the bills. We have kids playing hockey and a quote from Roch Carrier's story "The Hockey Sweater" on our $5 bill!

I like it, I like the color and everything. Are they going to be adding color to any of the other bills soon?

It actually looks very good. I like how they just added a bit of color instead of making look like something out of monopoly .

Ugh, are they redoing the design again?!

Oh well, it looks decent.

Heh. When I first read the title, I thought it had something to do with $20 Billion. A givaway, perhaps. :)

Looks good. When I first heard they were going to make colored money, I thought they were going to make it look like Monopoly money, like some other countries. :p

I wouldn't totally rule out the possibility that they remade the 20 dollar bill because in the old one, if you folded it a certain way, people claimed you could see an image of the burning Twin Towers and the Pentagon. Whatever.

Now all I have to do is print it out and dangle it in front of my little cousin for a laugh. :D

Looks pretty good, actually, even though it looks like Andrew Jackson overdid the Vidal Sassoon. :D

Seriously, it's not a bad portrait, and I like how they incorporated some colour into the bill. It's about time they joined the rest of the world on that. ;)

Think it will really catch on? Or will it be forced to catch on? Like the new look but I wish it would be a little more centered, it's driving me insane.
