This may be old news or not, but here it is anyway.

Confirming rumors that have been floating for months, Viz has officially discontinued its monthly manga comics, opting to publish all materials in trade form. This is the second major change in the publisher’s operations; following its recent resizing of its graphic novel line to match the TokyoPop trim size.

The switch means that there will be a lag between the ending of the monthly series and the resumption of the storyline in the graphic novel series. The changeover will be complete by the end of June, and the publisher will release only graphic novels from July on.

The series’ continuation information is as follows: (final issue, and listing of where and when storyline will continue)

The All New Tenchi Muyo part 2 #5 continued in The All New Tenchi Muyo Volume 3 in fall 2003.
Bastard!! #15: Undead!! Part 1 of 5 continued in Bastard Volume 5, fall 2003.
Battle Angel Alita: Last Order part 1, #6 continued in Battle Angel Alita Volume 2 in fall 2003
The Big O Part 4, #4 included in (series ends with #4) The Big O Volume 5 in winter 2003.
Ceres, Celestial Legend Part 5, #1 included in Ceres, Celestial Legend Volume 5 in fall 2003.
Dragon Ball Part 6, #2 included in Dragon Ball Volume 12 in fall 2003.
Inu-Yasha Part 7, #7 included in Inu-Yasha Volume 15 in fall 2003.
Project Arms Part 1, #6 included in Project Arms Volume 2 in fall 2003.
Ranma ½ Part 12, #1 included in Ranma ½ Volume 23 in summer.
Silent Mobius: Hell Part 12, #3 included in Silent Mobius: Hell Volume 11 in summer.
Vagabond Part 16 included in Vagabond Volume 7 in fall, 2003.

Currently, Dark Horse is the only publisher reprinting manga in comic book-sized format.

actuly, I think this was already mentioned in the Toonami board but with the added sting of the lack of non-us shiping for viz.

Bah, they're already up to five volumes of the Big O manga?

I have some catching up to do...

Hopefully, this could be a good thing if only to speed up the completion of Ranma. Sure I myself only have up to the first Pantyhose Taro arc, but basically it has taken 10 years to get up to where they are right now!

Actually, no. The second volume was only released a couple of weeks ago. I believe that volume five is where the GNs will pick up from the individual issues.

Notice that they list volume 15 of "Inuyasha" when only 13 volumes have been released. And notice they list volume 2 of "Battle Angel Alita: Last Order" when no GNs have been released.

Well, I recently ordered the Episode Zero graphic novel from Amazon.com. Hasn't arrived yet but the DVD I ordered on the exact same day has. However, the site says it shouldn't arrive till Monday so I'll wait and see.

I guess my comic buying from Viz is going to be limited to Animerica from now on.

It's not that I'm opposed to the graphic novel format, it's just that I can't afford them. I've dropped Tokyopop and never started ComicsOne for the same reason.

Will they be "backwards?"

Will they be "backwards?"

You mean right-to-left? If they were originally released left-to-right, they'll remain left-to-right. So series like "Inuyasha", "X/1999", and "The Big O" will remain flipped for the rereleases. However, I believe Viz will publish all future acquisitions in the right-to-left format.
