Watching the Avril Levigne(sp? or not) portion..............she had one really flat voice. Who thought this was a good idea? Heck, my gf could do better then that. I guess it could be worse, but still, this is just........no.

It's on right now here on the East Coast, and Jim Breuer was pretty cool. Snoop Dog was a bit of a let down though. *~*

If I never hear Snoop Dog sing Metallica again, it'll be too soon.
Other than that, this reminded me why I was such a nut for these guys during my high school days. I'd heard all the stories on Behind the Music, it was the performances I tuned in for. And yeah, Avril's voice was flat, but she poured herself into it, and I thought it was good. Staind was great, Korn was pretty good, and Limp Bizkit really surprised me. I usually hate them, but what they did with Welcome Home was pretty awesome. I was a bit pissed that Newsted didn't appear live, but hey. And damn, it was so good to hear songs like Blackened and Hit the Lights again. I was beginning to think they'd forgotten them. :p Welcome back guys, and I'll sure as hell be picking up St. Anger.

Refelcting now, Limp Bizkit really suprised me. I never knew Fred Durst had that kind of vocal range, or that good a raging scream. Avril, well, I never really liked her but I guess she did give it her all. Still think they could have found a betetr female vocalist, like maybe Alanis if she was willing, but whatever. The Staind guys were pretty good too, though Arron came off a bit flat their as well. Ans the "new" Metallica, whoa. I'm really anxious to hear the first cut of off St. Anger. :D

NNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!! I missed it...watching..Smallville...
I remember watching the commericials and thinking "Man, all the bands performing suh-uck. The bands just making an appearance should be playing."
Still, I really wanted to catch it. Metallica's pretty cool.
Question though. Did it start last year with Aerosmith, or has MTV been doing this every year for awhile?

I'm not real sure, and don't worry, this is MTV, they'll repeat it into the ground. ;)
BTW, noticed your avatar, you should IM The Guitar Slayer if you haven't already. I think you guys have at least one common interest, heh. ;)

A brief history:
This is the 3rd MTV Icon, which is kind of a MTV hall of fame. In 2001, they saluted Janet Jackson. Last Year they saluted Aerosmith.
And the artist(s) from the previous year seemed to introduce this years Icon.
All and all, this will be good, until they induct a pop band. I say they get Green Day or even *Shudder* Mariah Carey in.

On a little off-topic note, I respect Mariah Carey's voice and talent, and I actually enjoy many of her older songs. (Pre ghetto-pop) But, the way she's portrayed is rather slutty in my opinion, which doesn't help her overall image.
Metallica rocks. :)

I think even James Hetfield was laughing at Avril

Hey I thought Avril`s full performence was excellently done, not supurb but it was still some of her best work.
I don`t know who James Hetfield is since I never followed Metalica like I follow Aerosmith and other oldies but goodies, what I do know is the leader of Metalica seemed to be impressed by Avril's performence.

You noticed that too? Everyone around here thought that I was seeing things. As for next years, I bet it's either Madonna, Run-DMC, or The Beastie Boys.

Green Day would make sense for next, as would Run-DMC.
And I think Hetfield was more amused then anything else with the fact that Avril could pull it off at all. I doubt he was laughing at her, just laughing beucase he was happy.

Newsted isn't in the band anymore. He's playing with Voivod these days.

You know I don`t care how bad Avril might seem, Snoop Dogg was the one that needed work.

He also took Robert Tujilio's (sp?) place in Ozzy's touring band.

I didn't mean to perform with them, I just meant that it would have been nice if he'd have got to do the lead in to their performance instead of Sean Penn. Just because he's not in the band doesn't mean he can't show up. He's a big part of Metallica history, and he's still great friends with them (Well, Kirk and Lars anyhow  ).
