This discussion started in the thread Which Rogue has came the closest to Almost Gettin Em? (http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?threadid=74766), referring to the connection between Croc nearly crushing Batman with a rock in "Sideshow" and the "I hit him with a rock" line in "Almost Got 'Im." It now seems too OT to leave in the original thread, so I'm starting a new one. My apologies if this is confusing or steps on any toes; maybe the mods will shift things around.
I bet that was a nod to ALMOST GOT 'IM, because ever since that corny one-liner of his (which I liked the first time around), it became an ongoing gag with Croc. They harp on it again in TRIAL. I mean, honestly, is he really that dumb? :pMy answer is "no." In "Vendetta" especially, Croc is a very conniving character, possesing key street smarts and a fairly good understanding of the Justice system. Nothing all that terrific, mind you, and he is obviously very poorly educated, but as Croc says, "Hey, I'm adaptable. When you look like me you need to learn to go with the flow."

He is less intelligent than most, if not all, of the other Rouges, but you have to remember--the Rouges are generally an extremely intelligent group of crooks! How else can they even attempt to be a match for Batman? I think it is Croc's relative intelligence that he gets such flack for. If you went to study literature at Harvard, and you could only recite 18 Shakespeare monologues, you might get flack too! Besides, I think Croc can use this as an advantage. Authorities seem to underestimate him, treating him like nothing more than a big brute (this happens in "Sideshow" with disastrous results).

Also, the simplest methods are often the most effective. Croc won't come up with elaborate schemes just for the sake of it; he'll do only what needs to be done for his selfish or hateful ends. I think one of the glorious aspects of the episode "Almost Got 'Im" is the idea that Batman's most dastardly foes are so enamoured of the Batman legend that they cannot bring themselves to merely end Batman with a pull of the trigger. It's an ego contest not just to see who can do Batman in, but who looks the coolest while pulling it off. And the enemies that wouldn't hesitate to give Batman a quick end are too simple, too cowardly and supersticious if you will, to do the job. Killer Croc is, IMHO, an interesting middle ground between these two types of foes.

As for why he shouts out "Hit 'im with a rock!" in "Trial" -- it's not necessarily true to my interpretation of the character, but I have to admit, it was pretty funny!

I never thought of Croc as being a "stupid" character - he isn't as intelligent as most of the others (he isn't a doctor, a chemist, gone through the BAR exam, etc, etc) but is not as stupid as he's been made out to be. Yes, in his origin episode (VENDETTA) he's treated very well - a coniving, street-smart guy that, really, is quite terrifying. SIDESHOW is similar - he's not viewed as an intelligent guy on par with the other rogues, but is still given respect.

In nearly every other episode he's appeared in, however, the writers seem to make him OVERLY stupid. It's good for a laugh or two in some episodes (ALMOST GOT 'IM, TRIAL) but then in others, he's treated as just a big dumb oaf (LOVE IS A CROC, JUDGEMENT DAY). To the writers, he's become the "other big strong guy" in the rogue's gallery - in nearly episode aside from the first two I mentioned you could supplant him for Bane and the story would be pretty much the same. I know he's got a head on his shoulders, but I'd like to see the writers give him a little more respect in future episodes and storylines. :)

Don't you think hitting Batman with a rock would be more effective than most of the elaborate schemes the rogues come up with?

actually...yes. lol. It's a funny line, and I know the other Rogues were looking at him like "you idiot", but I swear that's probably one of the better plans any of them could come up with that would have a good chance of working! Croc is great, because he's not all that smart, but he's certainly not all that dumb. Books might not be his strong point, but as stated earlier, street smarts are. And that's what really counts in the end in a place like Gotham City. Why spend your time thinking up weird plans when someone else can do it for you and you can stick with what you do best, beating people up? He doesn't try to do more than what he does the best and what works for him. You might trick him with some trivia, and his thoughts might be basic at times, but that probably makes him that much more dangerous. You underestimate him, and assume he's a big peice of stupid flesh with teeth. Attach a brain to that image, and you definitely should be worried.

Hey, in SIDESHOW he almost hit him with that rock too. Yeah, in VENDETTA he was seen as very cunning and evil. I think it wasn't until TNBA that the stupid croc came along.

Croc didn't come across as dumb in TNBA. He was perfectly willing to take advantage of Baby Doll's sympathy for his own advantage in Love is a Croc, its just that she turned the tables on him in the end. What happenned to Croc in TNBA is that he came off as less human which is ironic since it seems that in the TNBA they were trying to humanize his appearance and voice but he wind up losing the qualities that made him human in B:TAS.

Hey, as a long time lurker, few time poster, I feel out of place commenting, BUT I really feel like pointing out that in 'Almost Got 'Em' Batman was disguised as Croc to infiltrate the rogues' poker game and find out what Joker did with Catwoman. So, Croc never said that histerical "it was a big rock" line. Batman did. :p

Oh, we all knew it was Batman that was behind the mask of Croc in that ep. But Croc sure paid for Batman's joke in later episodes, where everyone paints him and just a big, dumb oaf. Poor Cwocky Wocco... :p

In comics continuity Croc became more savage and gradually lost his humanity, which at times made him appear stupid.

After he recovered from Bane breaking both his arms he eventually ended up living in the swamps of Louisiana, under the care of the swamp thing.

Which is of course is where they should've left him with a nice happy ending, but it's a never ending battle so of course he came back, and now I think he is either savage or lucid depending on the writers whim.
