View Full Version : More News on Justice League's Second Season (SPOILERS!)

This month's Wizard Magazine has some brand new dirt on the new Season. Among the new tidbits:

1) Twilight will premiere on Saturday, July 5 at 8pm. Well, not necessarily at 8pm -- it will be led in by four Superman episodes (possibly Apokolips...Now! and Legacy, but those are my guesses). After which Twilight will premiere at 10pm, with both episodes back-to-back.

A brief description of the episode is as follows: "Darkseid will ask Superman and the Justice League for help in protecting Apokolips from a super-powerful enemy." Your guess is as good as mine.

2) Not only is the Joker coming back, but so is Harley Quinn! In another episode, the duo will apparently run wild in Las Vegas. This could be the Wild Cards episode, where the Joker teams up with the Royal Flush Gang. Now, that's what I call a full deck (sorry, I had to say it, :p ).

Otherwise, the rest of the article had material that we've heard before: Amazo, Despero, and Dr. Destiny will debut; Aquaman, Dr. Fate, and Vandal Savage will return; and Superman will be mighty again (as quoted by Timm):

"[Last season], we didn't give enough attention to Superman. Everybody complains that the Justice League Superman is a super wimp. He's restored to his full grandeur in Season Two."

Well, the floodgates are open now. I'm betting that the spoilers will keep coming seeing how close we are to July 5th.

Hmmm....I hope Twilight is as good as they're making it out to be. I mean, if they're willing to compare it with "Legacy" and "Akopolis...Now!" by airing those two first, they'd better be sure that "Twilight" is able to deliver. It'd really be disappointing if the 2nd Season Premiere doesn't take the Superman/Darkseid story to the next level.

As for Harley returning, it was only a matter of time. She's Harley. Is Dini writing that one?

Great to hear it. Can not wait for it! Wonder who the person who is attacking Apokolips is? Guess I will have to watch to find out.

I certainly hope they do that. Infact this is the kind of thing they should have when Season 1 was airing, or better yet before Season 1 started: "Justice League Basics". They should have run the previous team-up episodes and character highlight episodes before the new episodes premiered. Like airing "A Fish Story" before "The Enemy Below" or "The Demon Within" before "A Knight of Shadows". Hopefully the whole "'Twilight' preceded by previous Superman episodes" will set a precedent for the way the rest of season 2 will be aired.

At any rate, Saturday July 5th my VCR will be working overtime. :)

Well... that's definitely not what I was expecting. Darkseid asking the Superman and the League for help. I wonder if the threat to Apokolips is something that's appeared in the comics before or if it's something they created for this story, or even if it exists at all.

The fact that Darkseid might be "asking" for help will make Part 1 the better half dramatically, especially when he has to do it to Superman. As a matter of fact, I am not surprised that this will be the first episode simply because too many people have questioned Superman's ability in season 1. People want this issue resolved, immediately.

Later.

Woohoo! More information about the upcoming Season Two, and I am glad about it! I am glad to see the premise for both Twlight and possibily Wild Card are going to be excellent ones. I got my issue of Wizard today so I'll be sure to check out the article.

Also, since we are starting to get alot of information, shouldn't there be like a Sticky Topic for all News, Rumors and Thoughts about JL:TAS S2? Just a thought...

There have already been, like, two or three already, but they keep getting lost in the shuffle. It's probably for the best, since new news might get buried in old posts. As for sticking it to the top...there are already a bunch up there. Don't want to overcrowd the board.

The "Twilight" premise... it's GOT to be a hostage situation. Darkseid has to be holding someone, or something, or some planet hostage, and telling the JL that if they don't help him, he'll kill or destroy he, she, they, or it.

Because otherwise, a Darkseid asking anyone for help (especially Superman and the JL) to save Apokolips would be told to forget it, if not cursed out. (As Batman Beyond told the leader of the Society of Assassins when he asked for help, "I'll see you in the obits." Then the leader of the Society of Assassins held all of Gotham City hostage to get Batman Beyond's help.) Darkseid is a tyrant with godlike powers, and Apokolips is his dictatorship! The JL would NEVER willingly help save Darkseid or Apokolips without a hostage situation of some kind being involved...

As for "Wild Card", I can't wait! Perhaps Joker & Harley Quinn win big in Las Vegas and use the money to found the Royal Flush Gang? And, someone please tell me that Static Shock will NOT be showing up! (Sorry Static fans, I don't mind the JL being on SS, but I don't want SS on JL.)

Which episode will be the Vandal Savage episode? And aren't Brainiac and Ra's Al Guhl also showing up in Season 2?

One other thing I noticed... I thought Season 2, like Season 1, was supposed to have 26 episodes. But I can only count 25...

There are actually two Vandal Savage episodes, but I can't tell you which ones they are. Sorry.

Brainiac will be showing up, but not Ra's.

There are 26 episodes. "Comfort and Joy" is a 1-parter, while the season finale is a 3-parter. That's 4 plus 11 2-parters, making 26.

and why would the JL want to get involved or take sides?

My thinking is that it would threaten Earth as well. or Darkseid has hostages that forces them to help.
Maybe the New Gods are facing the Lovecraftian Elder Gods and Old Ones such as Karkull

but my bet is that Brainiac has been upgraded with Mother Box technology and is trying to delete Apokolips

I can see how Hawkgirl might fit into all this (DL please do not confirm my hypothesis should it be correct - I don't want to spoil anything!) After all, if she's trapped on Earth, it would stand to reason that Darkseid would have the power to get her back home....or hold Thanagar hostige. And Timm (or someone else) did say that two episodes would involve her origins...maybe it comes up in Twilight.

Heya nothing...what about Lois and Clark? Can you say anything about them? Or perhaps Wonder Woman....?

EDIT: Just read your last post. I guess Lois is off-limits. Any hope that Diana's origins or history may be fixed up? All this "My father may or may not be Hades" stuff is really frustrating for a fan of Perez's 1980s relaunch, like me.

I was thinking along the same lines, since Timm mentioned that "Twilight" would, er..highlight both Superman and Hawkgirl. Although my theory was that the threat might be someone that Hawkgirl has had past experience with when they attacked Thanagar, or perhaps the villain(s) might be Thanagarian themselves, causing Hawkgirl to convince the league to help Darkseid.

Good news, good news.

At first I was wary about Darkseid being reduced to a secondary villain if a villain at all, but the speculations on the thread make me realize how many posibilities there are. Very cool.

Vegas is an excellent setting for Wild Card. The inclusion of Joker and Harley and the exclusion of Static should make this a standout.

I wouldn't say no to a Static guest spot EVER, but it has to be handled carefully, IMO. He wouldn't be an easy character to mesh with the league.

In response to "why would Superman and the Justice League want to help save Apokolips," remember that at the end of Legacy, Superman did show compassion for the slaves on Apokolips; he attached no malcontent to them. So it would seem possible, even logical for them to play off of that for Twilight.

Is anyone else wondering if there will be a new opening intro animation for season 2? The current one is decent, but I'd love to see a new one.

It would be nice if they would use the same one, only in traditional animation. I think the mods like Jim Harvey and Bird Boy were priveledged enough to receive a copy of the Justice League premiere, "Secret Origins," that used Bruce Timm's painted stills for the opening sequence instead of the computer-generated one. I like how Timm uses the wide-screen format for every intro of his series now. Even though there was reused footage in the intro to The Batman/Superman Adventures, it was very original how he put new animation over it (like where in one scene it shows a silloette of Batman swinging over stock footage from TNBA).

And if they stick with the same Justice League intro, I'm all right with it. If I ever get this Batman Beyond project I have up and running, I might just try to make a hand-drawn Justice League intro myself. :D

In that case, I'd say that Darkseid is holding his own people hostage then. Like any dictator, he doesn't care about his people at all, and sometimes only pretends to until they do what he wants...

What's wrong with the current intro to Justice League? I think it's a great intro. Besides, I'd rather Timm & Co. save that money for making great episodes as great as possible... animation and voice actors aren't cheap, you know :)

I hope the superman crossover doesn't suck I really hate plot holes. So far things have been decent not counting the Gear eating through his mask. I replayed that scen 28 times. Anyway as for Static appearing on the Justice League I will wait until "I" see Toys in the Hood. I don't want any of the series screwed up. I was "hoping" that after season 3 Static could come back as a new show maybe called Static and Gear.
I mean it would work out perfectly in Static Shock we see Static start to learn how to uses his powers. Then in Static & Gear, Static starts to master his power with hopefully no more crossovers or just a few great crossovers. I don't mind waiting 2 or even 4 years as long as it's done right. Good things come to those who wait (sometimes)
My "dream" is for a TV-PG or TV-14 Static & Gear. Like we'll ever get a TV-14 DC cartoon maybe TV-PG. Maybe a TV-PG Justice League?

I'm about to bust with all this JL S2 info! Darksied asking the League for help? My question is what could Darksied possibly need help against? That should prove interesting and the hostage theory does indeed sound like it could be right. The possible story lines with Hawkgirl might be interesting as well. I hope the STAS episodes they show are Apokilops Now! and Legacy.

Things get hot with Lois and Clark? Oh boy that ought to be something to see! At least we will be seing Clark. nothing, DarkLantern, you guys are something else you know that?

or maybe Little Girl Lost?
Here's more speculation just to drive us crazy ;)
Hawkgirls Mace always bothered me. The Hawks traditionally used ancient weapons from the Museum they were Curators for. and this Hawkgirl does not seem the Curator type.
That Electro Mace looks more like New Gods technology. What if Darkseid was working some Intergang type stuff on Thanagar as well.
Hawkgirl was investigating and happened to grab the mace during the battle. The Zeta Beam could be part of Thanagar technology (there is comic precedence for this) or even New Gods.
The treaty does not prevent Darkseid from getting other planets to conquer earth for him
Hawkgirl exposes the conspiracy and is declared a traitor/outlaw/fugitive.
She manages to destroy the Zeta Beam and preventing the invasion but ends up getting zapped and stranded on earth.

just some speculation based on what we know so far ;)

Well, we weren't "priviledged" to receive it, it's just that CN sent out screeners before the intro was completed, and so it had the concept paintings with a temporary score in its place. And, frankly, I like the rough version better than the finished one.

What's wrong with the current intro to Justice League? I think it's a great intro.

Well, the introduction itself is terrific. It's the execution that I dislike. It looks like a bunch of jerky marionettes.

In fact, I'm not sure I'd even like to see that intro in regular animation. The rough version on the screener (IMO) is amazingly powerful just because it is so rough. It's like the characters are so iconic that they can't be captured in a conventional image and can only be suggested by a series of fleeting glimpses.

I thought we even uploaded somewhere either onto TZ or WF. Bird Boy, is that screener version still out there for viewing? :Maxie logs off to go watch his screener again:

Toys in the Hood was great only people who are too lazy to break down the story and characters wouldn't understand it. As for Static ever appearing on the Justice League what ever I'll let the writer decide. Let them have fun with the series and NOT try to please the hardcore fans. Things should work out better that way. I mean most so called hardcore fans just want to see their beloved old and dead characters in animated form. I say screw to all of them let the writers, write if no Static ever then fine if you don't get your favorite characters ever then fine. I don't want to stress the writers just have fun guys. I know you won't let the show down. I don’t want a cheesy show like the Superfriends ever again.

My only problems with the intro is that everyone else is in these featureless block forms except for the breif shot of Wonder Woman when shes deflecting bullets. If they went through teh trouble of filling her in why not just fill the others in as well?

You know personally what I would do is try to create a sequence made from those neat promo spots where the heroes symbols whirl around and you see a hint of them in animation.

Basically run a sequence like that set to the current OP.

You know I don't mean to complain, but why didn't they include the awesome episodes "Tools of the Trade" and "Father's Day"? I mean the latter episode contains the best scene between Supes and Darks next to "Legacy".

"Who are You!" Supes asked.

Zeta beams fire out of Darkseids eyes with a malicious grin, and then noticing, crap this guy is stronger than I thought.

"That is who I am?" An easily stolen Dr. Doom line if I ever heard one.

Well, the idea was the have all the heroes in near-sillouhette to make them appear more mysterious as well as majestic. Wonder Woman was also supposed to be in deep shadow, lit briefly only by the flashes of the bullets hitting the bracelets.

Now the following is speculation, but it's possible that the CGI for her sequence had the lighting changed so it would look better. With the angle of her body and the shape and the background, I don't think Diana's sequence would have looked as good if she was in deep shadow.

Why did some online reports think that Static was going to guest star in JL (even though he isn't)? They misunderstood this quote from John Semper about "A League of Their Own":

"We did do a lot of crossovers stories," said Semper. "That was great fun. It's always fun to combine casts because, for one, it makes for a great recording session. We did a Justice League two-parter. The first part is more like a Justice League episode with Static in it. The second part is more like a Static episode with the Justice League in it. Anyway it would be fun with someone like Static's character in Las Vegas. Flash will be drooling over the showgirls and everyone else will act all dead. That's no fun none at all. I hope Joker does something still it will be boring. I mean the Justice League in Laz Vegas god that seems more like the style of Static, Batman, Flash, or even Superman.

Ugh, keep Static out.. never been a kid fan in the Timm universe (part of my hostility to TT - kids fighting crime is just silly - Tim causes me enough reality issues in TNBA).. good to hear about Lois, I think that is progress. W...h...a...t...?

Justice League in Las Vegas is not allright for the Justice League, but it's all right for Static (who's teamed with the 'League), Batman, Flash and Superman (all of whome are IN the JL). So basically you're saying that it wouldn't fit Wonder Woman, Martian Manhunter, Hawkgirl or Green Lantern? Why? They'd all be able to fit in, plus it'd add a bit of humor. I think you're just rather negative to the whole thing. Why? I don't know, but you seem to be...too pro-Static Shock. I'm not saying SS is a bad show, I enjoy watching it on occasion, but you should really open up your mind more. SS isn't the greatest show ever, neither is JL for that matter. But just..c'mon man, lighten up.

As for my thoughts on the new news...I'm soaking it all in a day at the time, and by the time it finally soaks, July will be here for me to enjoy it.

I have been a fan of Milestone comics from the get-go and I thought the Static Shock series was a "milestone" in animation and the African-American community, but other than that I don't approve of it. The comics were alot better. Perhaps someday they will make an Icon animated series that will appropriately capture the Milestone universe, and air it on Cartoon Network or BET, but until then I am content with Static Shock. I like some of the things introduced in the series, even the original uniform, but I don't like all this crossover stuff with DCU. If it were up to me, I'd exchange every appearance made by a DCU character for a Milestone character.

Totally - nail on the head. I recall reading the first issue of SS and being mildly impressed. I have nothing against the cartoon, I just don't think it fits in the DCU. As with TT, I think both will stand up better without having links to the DCU (despite TT's strong DC links! :p). Neither are bad concepts, but to me are two different to sit in what's gone before. They stand better alone.

Why bring up TT? Well, part of me has this horrible feeling that come season 2 of TT or season 3 of JL, there will be a JL/TT crossover. I can't see WB ignoring the chance for both shows to promote each other... that to me, will be a bad day for both series. It happened with SS and with BB and Zeta.. While JL looks like the nearest comparison to TT in character, I just hope they let both series ride on their own merits and not suffer a cross over of what looks at the moment (speculating) as incompatiable franchises.

No doubt they will, although not on a grand scale. They'll probably have like a couple of characters at a time. But who knows. I hope Justice League as a series unto itself has no appearances by any rugrats, that would be damn near blasphemy.

I said someone with Static's character. I don't really care if Static ever shows up in JL or not. I am just saying it seems a bit boring.

I never do enjoy villian teamups with the good guys. Especially considering that in Legacy Sups was willing to kill Darkside and that they will most likely create a villian more "darker" than Darkside.

Well there is the theory that Darksied will take a hostage and force the JL to help and I think this has a lot of credibility becuase I just don't think Superman would want to help Darksied.
