Favorite Cliffhangers!

Inspired by a section in a TVGuide from a few weeks ago (i forgot until now to post it, w/ all the stuff that's been going on), i thought i'd hear your opinions on cliffhangers. Only i'll include animated ones in my question. So, what has been your favorite cliffhanger; animated or live-action?

I think i'd have to go w/ the two from Beast Wars. The first season ended w/ Optimus dying due to Megatron's sabatoge while trying to save the planet. Sure, he came back, but i was just in awe to see Optimus die. It was really thrilling. I had no idea how they could fix it.

Then the second season ended w/ Megs finding the Arc, and severely damaging Optimus Prime, causing a great time storm to commence and the apparent loss of the Autobots, thus insuring the Maximals would "no longer exist!" That sentence doesn't even do it justice:)

But i just like it when a season ends and you really don't know what's going to happen next. I always like to see how creative writers are if they can first think up a giant hole to dig themselves, jump in it, and then climb back out.

So what about you?

Sonic The Hedgehog SatAM series....who were those red eyes? And the SERIES ended on that cliffhanger! :mad: But I soon learned it was Naugus...
...and the cliffhanger from WOODY'S ROUNDUP in Toy Story 2 was good. I like cliffhangers ending a series, I guess....;)

Hard to say.

I thought some of the King of the Hill cliffhangers were pretty good--especially the second season's gas explosion.

Some anime ones come to mind--08th MS Team had several good cliffhangers starting from episode 6, where every one of Shiro's teammates looked up to the sky in desperation as he was flown away...

Sailor Moon S had a good one near the end, where Serena/Usagi/ Sailor Moon actually came to the realization that the happy future she saw the season before was actually in jeopardy, and that the world could actually, possibly end because of her complacency. And the ending was different from other seasons in that Sailor Moon was, for once, WRONG. She couldn't quite save everyone she wanted.

Yeah, I know. I was hoping it was Metal Sonic but oh well........

Anyway back on topic, it would be the first time I saw Dragonball, and Jackie Chun/Kennin-sennin used his Chou-Kamehameha on the moon. I honestly thought it he had killed Gokou (This is before I ever heard of DBZ).

I'd also have to go with what you said optimal321, when Meg's had messed with the pod that OP was in and it blowing up, with the words "The End?" appearing on the screen. My favriote episode of that show would have to of been when Dinobot died saving the humans, it was a great episode.

I liked the "Who Shot Mr. Burns?" cliffhanger on The Simpsons. Wonderfully over-the-top set up which suggested (and got) a perfectly ludicrous solution. (Homer: "Wait, I thought Smithers shot Mr. Burns!" Lisa: "That would have made more sense.")

Last season's X-Files cliffhanger was pretty darn awesome... that "the truth we both know" line and then the kiss. Simple but quite astounding! The other seasons offered very suspenseful cliffhangers as well.

Buffy's death was also an outstanding cliffhanger. Seeing her grave and its epitaph ("She saved the world a lot") gave me the shudders :)

The end episode of series 3 of Babylon 5 (Z'hadum) kept me waiting with little patience for a year and a half..... fantastic ending to a season... Sheridan leaping to his doom on Z'hadum... great stuff..

However THE most amazing cliffhanger must be the final epsiode of Blake's 7. Avon killing Blake and his crew being shot from around him. He points his gun at the guards and smiles..... poetry... pure poetry....

The first real cliffhanger I remember and will never forget was the end of season two of Star Trek The Next Generation, the cliffhanger at the end of Best of Both Worlds. I saw it the first time, and I had no idea if they were going to write Patrick Stewart out of the show at that point. The show could have so easilly continued on with Riker as Captain and Shelby as the First Officer, they really had us on a wild ride with that one. It was the best Star Trek cliffhanger ever, IMO.

Yeah, Code of Hero was my favorite episode too. I could go into great detail about all the things i liked about it, but i should probably stop now. :D

Well, Danger Girls alright if you like that kinda thing, but Battlechasers just takes tooooooooooooooooooooo long to come... out... oh, sorry, wrong cliffhangers... I'll just get my coat... :o

Here are some of the best cliffhangers I saw in recent years:


Star Trek the next generation: The best of both world part 1.
That episode put the show, who was not doing that good before, on the map. I remember talking about it with my friends all summer. We tried to come up with ways that they would stop the borg.


Buffy the vampire Slayer: Last episode of season two.
When she killed Angel, my jaw dropped to the floor.

Farscape: End of season one
How many things can go wrong at the same time? That episode made me a Farscape nut ever since.

Andromeda: End of season one
Wow! After a first year which was pretty ordinary, they come up with the best Cliffhanger of the year. That was the second best TV episode I saw that year. My first one was "The Body" from the show Buffy.

Reboot: End of season two.
How dare they kill Bob. Boy was I mad when I saw Enzo in charge at the end of season two. Of course they proved me wrong in season three ;)


I got a couple more, but I think I'll stop here.

I'm going with the Call pt. 1 from Batman Beyond...why? Cuz it ended w/ superman being framed, and Bruce giving Terry kryptonite to stop superman.

STAS: The end of Legacy part 1 where both Superman and Supergirl look dead and puke green thanks to the kyrptonite missle.

i certainly agree; i used to collect battle chasers but i stopped at issue 5 and that was 2 years ago(?). it is 2001 and BC is on issue 9.

on the topic of cliffhangers, 2nd season of buffy was mentioned as well as "the best of both worlds." i'll say "all good things..." from ST:TNG. although not a cliffhanger, i really liked how the show ended with the main cast playing poker. it was the only time picard joined them which made the scene so much more meaningful.

I don't know if anybody watched it but "The Pretender" had every season had a good cliffhanger (anybody who watched it knows what I mean)
