Looks like there will be a new anime magazine (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/feature.php?id=135).
A DVD and magazine for $9.99, same as Newtype USA.
How do you think Anime Play will fair against Newtype USA?

What makes them think that I'm going to pay $10 for a magazine all about anime I can't afford?

I'll give it a shot. I don't think it'll catch on as much as NewType USA has but it's got a chance of survival. The fact that there's no teaser episodes on their DVD is a big downside (especially with NewType mentioning that they're going to include the Japanese vocal track on their DVDs starting soon - this will pull in more of the anal-retentive purist crowd). Hopefully their con schedule will include one of the NYC area cons this season but I didn't see mention of BAAF, ShoujoCon or AnimeNext

I might have to check this out...it depends on what kind of animes they cover...

I like the idea of interviews and trailers on the DVD, but why news and reviews? Filming someone doing the anime news and reviews seems kind of cheesy imo. Like watching one of those video game shows on TechTV, haha.
I will try out their first issue, but I highly doubt I will get a subscription. I've very happy right now with NewType USA.

It's the next best thing we have to an actual anime news show...
I mean, if they could do a video game news show...

I'm not into buying anime magazines. I get all my anime info from the internet. I'll buy an anime magazine if they have an article about a series that interests me.

I might try it out...I've been very keen toward Newtype and Anime Insider (aka Anime Invasion) so I'll look to this.

As long as this newbie can bust out whith the official artwork to the calibut of Newtype (which i doubt) then I could care less
the whole reason I buy Newtype is for the official artwork 9I'm such a whore for that stuff)

I'm starting to feel that there is slowly becoming a little too many anime magazines right now. I mean, Animerica (which I used to read until I just stopped for some reason, probably since it isn't as good as it used to be), Newtype (which I should read but I don't have the money right now), Wizard's Anime Invasion, Protoculture Addiction (which is Canadian actually) and now this new one. For some reason, I have this feeling one or two of them might fail along the way....
Besides, if I want to know about an anime, the web has tons of resources.

Part of the reason I like NewType so much is simply because they cover so many things from Japan that isn't always readily available info on any given anime site. That, plus they have some neat articles on the technical side of animation. And, yeah, the artwork is great, too. That along with the DVD including a full episode of a series are the reasons NewType is the only anime magazine I've gotten into, lately.
I guess I'll try the first issue of this new one out. If it doesn't do any of the things described above as good or better than NewType USA does, then, needless to say, I won't pay it any more heed.
Man, with all these anime magazines coming out, you'd think we'd have more manga anthologies out by now, as well. Not that Shonen Jump and Raijin aren't great, it's just that I'm surprised we don't have more varied anthologies by now... especially with manga sales the way they are...

I'm gonna skip this one for now when I'm only playing $19 for 12 issues of Shonen Jump, and $9.99 an issue for NTUSA with more pages and a free episode on every DVD.
$9.99 an issue for 48 pages and free DVD != getting my money

Another one? How many of these are we gonna get? ;) Oh well. I'll look it over when it comes out.

I probably won't be getting Anime Play for several reasons.
1) It's half the number of pages Newtype USA has and yet Anime Play cost the same amount as Newtype USA.
2) There's no mention as to what kind of anime content that will be offered. I have some doubts Anime Play will have the same exclusive information Newtype USA has. If Anime Play is covering domestic material then Anime Insider and Animerica has that area covered.
3) I think it is a unwise choice not to include free anime episodes in their DVDs. Personally no amount of reviews and interviews can compare to free anime. I rather be watching anime than reading a review about it.
4) Are the trailers going to be same stuff we can download from the websites? Are the reviews and interviews going to be the same material as in the magazine? What about this webmanga? Will the artwork be good?
5) Their staffing seems very small. Only three people to handle the publication in America? That's a lot of work.
6) Trademark. Newtype has brand recognition in Japan and in America. Animerica has been around for over ten years. Anime Play will have a tough time establishing an image.

Meh, I'm not really one for buying anime magazines. I've seen NewType in stores, and it looks like a good magazine, but I don't think it's worth the $12.99 or so they charge for it at Chapters (the only place I've seen it so far).
I doubt I'd pay the $10 (probably more with the exchange rate) for this new magazine, either.
