Hi. This is my first time posting on this board, but I poasted a couple of times on the first TTTP board.
I was wondering about a gag that pops up in a couple of MGM "Tom and Jerry"s, that of Tom uttering a long, mournful, echoing "Don't you believe it!" [or rather "Doooon't youuuuu believe it!"] As far as I can remember, it's occured twice: In "Mouse Trouble"[1944], Tom reads in his mouse catching book that "A cornered mouse never fights". He tests that theory, only to be beaten up by Jerry. Tom then utters the line to the audience. The same line occurs after Tom is blow up by the explosive white mouse in "The Missing Mouse."[1953] [After the radio informs him the explosive mouse is no longer a danger]
Is the "Don't you believe it" [said in that specific manner] a original creation of the T&J writers, or is it taken from somewhere else [ala Lou Costello's "I'm a baaad boy" that appears in several Warner 'toons in different variations] If there's another board where I should discuss Tom and Jerry, sorry to bother you folks. But this board seems like a general classic toons discussion group, so I thought I'd give it a shot.

I don't know the answer, but Tom & Jerry are allowed to be talked about on this board. Just never talk about South Park or Pokemon. I learned my lesson on the old board.....

It came from Ripley's Believe It or Not. Believe it or else.

I'm not sure as to it's origin, but it made it's way into at least one W-B cartoon as well. If I'm not mistaken, doesn't Bugs utter this in "Big Top Bunny"?
