View Full Version : Bi-Weekly Avatars?

Yeah, yeah, it's funny seeing one mod playing with another's post. But since DG has a big topic to discuss, I thought I would pull this out of the "Oooh! I like the avatar" thread for all of us to see. References to "this thread" are to the "Oooh!" thread.
After getting some emails on this, I was thinking of adding an Avatar thread that would be stuck at the top of the boards. Since I couldn't successfully work out a way to get FUNNY QUOTES on this board, I've been stumped with a replacement for it. So I was thinking of making a bi-weekly Avatar thread. The Avatar thread would basically run for...well...forever, but be restarted every two weeks on a number system like the FUNNY QUOTES or FRESH QUESTIONS.
This upcoming Sunday is the next installment of the FUNNY QUOTES, and I would like to get an AVATAR thread going as well. The thread, so far, would be called THE MIGHTY AVATAR (nice and cheesey!) unless a better name can be whipped up.
So -- good idea? If it's good, just say yes and perhaps think of a name!
BTW - This thread would be closed on account of the new AVATAR thread.

Yeah, great avatar Frozen!
As for the avatar Thread being stuck, well, i guess i just don't get the point. Maybe you could further elaborate DG?

Stuck means that it'll stay ontop of the boards (like the FRESH QUESTION posts) until the post is replaced by it's next edition. I would just like to see this board have a air of bi-weekly "special" posts, like how the BB and JL Board have FRESH QUESTIONS and FUNNY QUOTES.

Hmmm.
This is merely a running thread where we can compliment each other on the avatars we've chosen. So I have to say I'm not sure why or how a biweekly thread should replace it.
Do we need a biweekly thread merely to exchange thoughts and compliments about avatars? The only reason I could see would be worries about this thread being "never ending," but that doesn't seem much a threat, and a biweekly thread would be an artificial solution.
On the other hand, a biweekly thread might work as WF's equivalent of TTTP's "New Avatar Sunday" (or whatever it's called). Every two weeks we change avatars, and post up our new avatar and discuss where it came from, like we did in the Retro Avatar Week thread. (Maybe add a contest element to it, letting people vote at the end of the 2 weeks on their fave avatar in the thread? That contest seemed to excite some people.)
Of course, if we did this latter course, there would be no need to close this thread--in fact, we might want to keep it (or an equivalent) open for those who choose not to participate, where they could compliment each others' avatars.
Just my $0.02. :)

hehe...$0.02...sounds better than "two cents" (whoever "coined" that phrase..grr..I just don't like it..lol)..
anyway, I'm for the Bi-Weekly thing, if it's like the contest that we had for Retro Avatar Week.
Thing is, I don't want this thread closed. As it is great to discuss avatars in general. Then again, your the head MOD, so, it's basically up to you (course..then again, if the readers don't like it..we can revolt and poof...your idea sucks.. :D).
I would, and will, enjoy the "THE MIGHTY AVATAR" (like you said..nice and cheesy...and cheese is good..so that's a plus), if it is like the Retro Avatar Week.But..I really want this thread to stay open...
That's my take on it anyway....
BTW- Frozen, your avatar is real cool..I loved those "Sentimental" moments w/ freeze...especially know he was really a cold-hearted man, it was really interesting to see him portrayed like that....

I dunno....I thought this was THE avatar thread! As for it being "neverending" I don't feel it would ever escalate out of control as another thread we won't mention now, as this is a pretty thight thread as far as subjects go and off topic tangents are quickly split off into a new thread. [Maxie says: ;) ] I think this thread is doing a fine job, and it easy to keep up with, and why fix what's not broken. My 2¢ anyway.

How about the GEEK QUESTION as a candiate for replacement for the funny quote thing? IR Joey labled his #1, suggesting there could be more on the way, and I think everybody here loves Geek Questions! Huh, huh?

Hey, Hey! There's an idea I could get behind. If they're all as fun as the "Date a Cartoon" thread I'm in.:D

GEEK QUESTION is a cool idea, but we already have FRESH QUESTION. Is it possible people could get these mixed up? I do like that suggestion thoguh. As for MIGHTY AVATAR, it would be sort of an ongoing thing, but it would just be..ahh..refueled (I guess) every two weeks so we don't get pages and pages and pages and pages of posts for that thread. I am totally open to any other ideas for a bi-weekly post to be paired with FRESH QUESTION. I'd like to do a FUNNY QUOTES for the board, but I haven't been able to pull that off. It'd be awesome, though.

As calhoun07 says, I'm not sure the "pages and pages" is a problem so long as we keep them culled of O/T material. Basically, that thread is just a place that, when you feel like dropping someone a compliment, you can. Closing it every two weeks wouldn't make much of a difference to the total posts that go into that subject, it would just lead to a lot of threads in the archive with the same subject.
If we want a "refueled" avatar thread, I think that a bi-weekly "new avatar" competition would be the way to go.

Would you like to spearhead this new bi-weekly avatar thread, Maxie. To be honest I'm not exactly big on the whole avatar thread, and you seem to really like doing this stuff. You could do magic with it. All I ask, if you accept, is to just keep a number system like so:
THE MIGHT AVATAR #1: [whatever]
See what I mean?

Well, it wouldn't necessarily have to be called Geek Question. I'm sure we could differenciate between the two somehow. Like it could be just a geeky topic or something. But, i don't really know.
I guess i still don't really see why we would need a bi-weekly avatar thread. But, like i said, i don't really know:rolleyes:

It doesn't have to be an Avatar thread. It can be something that can pair well with FQ as well as be entertaining. Suggestions are totally open. Anything you think can work, feel free to suggest.

Sure. If this happens, I'll handle it. But we're not seeing an outpouring of support.
Maybe we should try a one-off, just to see if it will fly? A "New Avatar Contest" for a week, just to see if people can even be motivated to change to a new avatar?
I like "Geek Topic" but it overlaps both in title and in concept with the "Fresh Question"; the caption contests make a better complement.
Hmm. . . .

I am really torn about the avatar thread subject. I have felt that on one hand, the current thread serves our needs just fine, and don't mess around with it. So if it gets to page 20 eventually, it's no big deal because it's being kept in control and isn't growing so exponetially that the moderators aren't able to keep up with it. On the other side of the argument, what relevance will those early posts have to people who go back to read the archived pages. People will be talking about somebody's avatar that they changed six months ago, so I can see that the posts on the board quickly become outdated and there is no reason to keep them up for long. But who is also going to sit and read thru all the pages? I think leaving it as is wins out in the long run.
GEEK QUESTION doesn't have to be called that. I think it's a GEEK TOPIC now, and it doesn't always have to be a question. It can be like the HOT TOPIC threads on the DVD board, where people just talk about things that appeal to fan boys such as us. It can be a question, or just a topic of some more generalized sort, and that would make it different from the FQ.
