Do We Really Need All These Bat-Titles?

I mean seriously? Batman has more titles than X-MEN, and they have about 5 times more characters at least! While I am actuall ylooking forward to the rumored Gotham Police crime book, I don't think we really need all these extra titles. Here's a list of what should go and stay:

BATMAN - Stay
DTEECTIVE COMICS - Stay
BATMAN: GOTHAM KNIGHTS - Stay (but in a new format)
BATMAN: LOTDK - Go (it's past it's prime)
NIGHTWING - Stay
ROBIN - Stay
CATWOMAN - Go (should be a mini-series)
AZRAEL - Go (for the love of God - Cancel this book!)
BIRDS OF PREY - Go (after Dixon leaves)
HARLEY QUINN - Go (what a useless book)
BATGIRL - Stay
BATMAN: GOTHAM ADVENTURES - Stay (New creative team)

The Superman books do it right. 4 main titles with rotating guest stars and two spin off titles, SUPERBOY and SUPERGIRL. I think DC may be putting too much Batman on the market. AZREAL should reall ybe cancelled. How many "new directions" has that book gone through? Five? Six?
BATGIRL is awesome ebcuas eof the intense action and great pacing. HARLEY QUINN is just a cash in book on the characters popularity. GOTHAM KNIGHTS could take a hint from the late BATMAN CHRONICLE's first year and showcase various Batman supporting characters.

The remaining titles should be:

BATMAN, DETECTIVE COMICS, GOTHAM KNIGHTS, ROBIN, NIGHTWING, BATGIRL, GOTHAM ADVENTURES, GOTHAM POLICE (rumored title)

I really hope Gotham Police happens...and doesn't cost friggin' $2.50!

Well DG, my opinions differ from you slightly. Here's my list of what should stay:
Detective Comics
Batman
Nightwing
Catwoman
Harley Quinn
Batgirl

As much as I like B: GA, it has really sucked lately and should be put out of its misery. I have never liked: Azrael, LOTDK, Birds Of Prey. And I think Robin has lasted too long. JMO

Keep Batgirl and Harley! They're just getting really good!!! Harley especially, I like the way this book is moving. These two and Robin are the only "mainstream" books that I get, and I think they're all done very well...

I will give Harley Quinn props for moving out of Gotham and to Metropolis. Change is good. Also, I predicted the book would be gone by #12 but...well...looks like I was wrong. :) But still. I still think this is just a book to cash in on he rpopularity. And BATGIRL is getting really good - flow slike a great action film. It has it's flaws but it's still enjoyable.

But BIRD OF PREY should go when Dixon goes, and AZREAL should have been gone a helluva long time ago.

Yeah, I will never understand why Azrael has lasted so long. I thought it sucked when it started but now its just CRAP!!

Well, as of right now I read all the Batbooks except for Azrael. Not the minis, but all the ongoings.

I like 'em. Harley is starting to get good, I like BoP, Nightwing, Robin, Batgirl (even tho it's starting to slack...).

Catwoman looks really interesting. I like Brubaker's work alot, so basically anything by him I'm gonna get.

I'm liking 'Tec and Batman a good deal, and GK is starting to get interesting (loved the Aquaman issue).

And LoDK, well, it has it's ups and it's downs (BAD is just that, bad).

So I say that as long as it's good comics, yes, we need all these Batbooks.

Oh, and Gotham Central looks killer!

I love Batman and Superman, but I hate the monthly books they appear in. I never purchase these titles because I refuse to buy five so-so books a month. With four/five titles there is a difficulty in what to do with the character...leaving us with plotlines that linger on forever and stupid, redundant villains (Mongal?). I feel that they only water down the original concept--the extras are only around in order to make money. In a perfect world there would only be one monthly Batman book, one monthly Superman book, etc.

As for spin-off characters, I have no problem with well-written books about them (in fact, losing four or five of the extra Batman titles would make more room for them).

Hmmm...I like your list. I think GOTHAM KNIGHTS could stay and become a title dedicated to the supporting characters, like Huntress, Question, Slam Bradley, Orpheus, Oracle, Black Canary, etc...ROBIN is a great book which has just hit a minor slump. The writer has been on the book since issue #1 so you can sorta expect that. The art on ROBIN is beautiful though. The current artist for NIGHTWING though sorta stinks. BATGIRL is definatly an action packed title. The Batgirl/Shiva rematch is going to be AMAZING! (It begins in December) AZREAL...lord...no comment. :)
