Here is a quote from an interview the Edmonton Sun did with James Cameron...

He also has high hopes of eventually returning to the Alien franchise as long as he can get the go-ahead to make a truly scary (and likely R-rated) film.

The 1979 original Alien, directed by Ridley Scott, "holds a special classic niche as one of the great terrifying experiences," Cameron said. "And the trick (to making a new Alien film) is you don't go crazy and make a $150-million movie because you don't want to have to compromise, you don't want to try to do a PG-13 Alien that is all things to everyone."

An Alien flick, Cameron said, ought to put the psychology back into psychological horror.

"It's got to still maintain its roots in this kind of cinematic id. Ridley did it really beautifully. He just kind of put you into this Freudian nightmare space."

Very cool. James Cameron could single handedly bring this franchise back from an almost death. Everything after Aliens was not really all that great. Alien 3 in an underated film, but Fox screwed up big time by killing off Ripley, and ideas were scrapped to have Alien 3 be a bad dream Ripley had in hypersleep. So they clone her 200 hundred years in the future. I love the Alien franchise only because of Alien and Aliens. Though Fox's upcoming extended cut DVD's of Alien, Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection has me curious.

Anyways, Fox should seriously think about bringing him back. He would make another great Aliens film, I know it. I'm seriously crossing my fingers on this one and hoping. Something tells me though that maybe Cameron has already talked to Fox or is going to soon. Sigorney Weaver has been going on for a while now about wanting to make a fifth and possible final movie. What a way to go if Cameron directs!

Here is the link to the rest of the interview. Pretty good read. He comments on Dark Angel's demise, Ghosts of the Abyss etc. http://www.canoe.ca/Television/apr8_cameron-sun.html

The books had it right.

Frell, Ripley tho. I hate when a whole cool universe revolves around only one person.

I say follow the books and have the war come to Earth. Urban warfare would be awesome and they better bring back the Colonial Maries.

That and I want my Aliens vs Predator franchise too.... the one from Robert Rodriguez.

I would have preferred Alien 3 to have kept the Marines and moved the story past Ripley, her part being played. I think centering on the one 'star' character meant you instantly knew the rest were expendable. I think Alien 3 and '4' should have had new characters rather than pushing Ripley beyond conceivable limits.

I would welcome Cameron's return!

I agree, SJJ. I wouldn't mind seeing them do something with Newt in a future movie. Ripley's cool and all, but isn't she kind of getting, you know, up there? I mean, it's been over 20 years since the original.

I'm just glad Cameron is at least thinking of doing something other than another Titanic-oriented movie. Egads, make a movie that wins an Oscar for everything but writing and acting and he makes it a lifelong obsession.
