View Full Version : Worst Kid's WB special events

I would put this on a poll, but there are so many bits and pieces of propaganda that Kid's WB had that I simply cannot name them all. But I digress.

In case no one has noticed, but I'm sure some have, Kid's WB is absolutely infamous for its useless and stupid propaganda, most of which consist of useless "short cartoon commercials" if you will. I'm not talking about those little commercial followups at all, but the so called special events that they host. Events where unlikely characters with nothing in common mingle mindlessly in a stupid situation. You know what I mean:

"It's the Kid's WB Road Trip! Be sure to pack your underwear!"
"Get ready for Socky's Christmas Eve Bash!"
"Send us your rap and your favorite Kid's WB stars will rap them on stage in Kid's WB's Rap-A-Thon!"
"the Belch-A-Thon!"

....you get the point.

Would anyone else like to comment on these things? Personally, I never saw the point of any of this. Then again, I have become older and wiser and see these things for their sheer stupidity. I'd even go so far as to say that it was because of these "special events" that the most annoying cartoon character in Kid's WB was born: that accursed talking sock. What do you think? Are all these "special events" necessary? What's the point to them? Are they ways that Kid's WB can connect with their audience or just an insult to their intelligence? You be the judge.

I thought the black history promo starring Max Gibson (Batman Beyond) and Agent J (MIB) was pretty stupid. Mostly because it made the 2 characters look like "tokens" :P
-Agent J: "The only 2 black people on the entire WB network would like to wish you a happy black history month"
-Max: "Yeah, so go check out your local library or whatever"

Of coarse, the belch-a-thon and everything involving the sock thing sucks, too.

I thought the Black History Month promo was thoughtful (and an actual *useful* use of the wretched promos/Recycled Stock Footage)...

That said, I (among everyone else on here!) have been complaining about KWB's cheesy promos for years now--- biggest culprit besides putting our favorite characters in humiliating situations in the promos (I cringed a bit today upon hearing Shaggy use a bit of "hip, rapper lingo" to describe this weekend's waste of time promo) would be, of course, the now-infamous Recycled Stock Footage. Back in KWB's late 90's days, it seemed as if every other promo had some character being humiliated in a crudely-looped-animated manner by some Poke-creature, along with promos featuring the Warners crudely singing and dancing in place, while not moving.

Still, the most annoying ones I can recall include:

- the "Thanksgiving" promo from the late 90's---the one I heard was so bad, the DC Comics folks complained about the mis-use of Batman (the A!, B:TAS, MiB, etc. casts are all eating some dinner and "get food poisoning"---cue stock footage of the various show's characters in pain).

- the "Naked Day" promo with the Barenaked Ladies: one that they changed the ad theme/name of at the last minute (after apparently realizing that "get naked" didn't sound too good).

- some promo with Elmyra singing about giving Pinky a bath (part of one of the boy-band-day promos)...*shudder*.

- any of the Pokemon-abuse-other-KWB-characters promos (like the one with stock footage of Brain leaping at Charizard unarmed to "battle" him)

- "Lou Bega Day": with stock footage of Superman and Kalibak (from a fight scene) looped to make it look like they're "doing the mambo".

And of course, any of the ones with that sock are pretty lame...

Guess fortunate I won't be watching TV this Saturday, and thus will miss seeing whatever that "rap promo" will consist of...

I think the "Kid's WB Cereal Bowl" was pretty stupid:
4 Pokemon trainers went up against 4 WB charicters. All morning they were showing "Battles". Here's one I remember all too clearly:
Mistey: I choose you Dewgong
Bruce wayne in audience: Use the Batmobil Terry!
Terry: I know, I know. I choose you Batmobil.
*Batmobil flies into the arena*
Misty: Ice Beam attack
*Dewgong freezes Batmobil*
Ref: The Batmobil is unable to battle!

That was wrong. They were showing those all morning. Among them were Vulpix vs. Lois Lane, Pikachu vs. Liverworst, and Superman vs. something.

And the First sock party. In the ad they were all singing about their sock.
Yugi: Mine are Blue

Yeah, anything containing that sock is just wrong.

Speaking of ridiculous KWB commercials, I remember a few years back when they were still showing Batman, they had one with Tim Drake trying to go to sleep, but he kept insisting to Batman that he "sing it."

Batman refused, then finally gave in and started singing the Jigglypuff song. I thought it was hilarious at the time but it's still utterly ridiculous.

Dang it! Now I'm going to have that stupid song stuck in my head all day!

"Jiiiigglypuff, Jigggglyyypuff..."

I do think both the Superman/MIB
was really funny.

The second one was where the coffee
drinking worms were supposedly
working at the Daily Planet, and
having coffee with Lois and Clark.

It's about time someone talked about this

First off, the Belch-a-thons- for a block that's full of shows that teach valuable lessons,(Pokemon, ect) The sure like to be hypocrites. They'd cut out scenes of a show which would influence a kid to say, fight someone. But then they show the Belch-a-thons, does that not teach kids to have horrid manners? not only is it just sad to find stock footage of random characters with their mouths open and dubbing a burp over it, it's also downright sickening.

That damn sock had got to get killed, or unraveled or what ever, I mean, he was alright when he first came, but now he's pathetic. I remember a couple of weeks ago when they actually took photos of children and put them on a sock, hell, they even "Animated" the photo's mouth to move, that's just wrong, do kids really go for such nonsense?

I wonder why they like pretending they made the characters by sticking them on the WB lot, it's just not funny anymore...

All I have to say is. I don't like any event with that Sock. Enough Said

Tottokohamutaro:And the First sock party. In the ad they were all singing about their sock.
Yugi: Mine are Blue
...

Ozzy said that.

The things I hated were:

The Scarmathone-Jade won, Yugi should have won. It could have been worse Scooby could have won, but he was knock out in the frist round.
The Powerpuff Girls being on for a shout time-every episode ends the same way. They knock Jackie out for it. If the 8 demons had a fight with the girls the girls would be crushed like ants.

The one I hope they make is one, where the Tiny Toons come back to the lot, because of there new movie, & they judge witch shows stay & witch shows get thorwn in the sheeder.
Shows that stay: Jackie Chan Adventures, Static Shock, X-Men EVO, Cubix, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Mucha Lucha!, maybe Ozzy & Drix.
Shows that are kicked off: Scooby, Pokemon, the Mummy, Rescue Heros.
Now that would be a good idea.

Here are my picks for worst "special event" gimmick.

Black History Month
The Belch-A-Thon!
NSYNC As Guest Stars
Anything With That Sock
The Rap-A-Thon

Plus A whole bunch of others I could think of if I could describe them.

You forgot the worst thing of them all: Theme weeks. Watch how continuity and sanity is thrown out the window as KWB tries to find five episodes somehow or another related. Pokemon had it bad back in its first seasons on the KWB block.

And yes, the sock should die. I never even like Stick Stickly during his heyday on Nick, but the sock is worse!

In particular, the Holiday Sock and the Belch-a-thon are probably the worst of all. The Holiday Sock almost made me laugh due to stupidity, and the Belch-a-thon is just plain... dumb.

The sock should be cut up to provide free blankets for poor cockroaches.

Yes, I hate the sock idea that much.

Ozzy said that.

No, I'm sure it was Yugi, because this was about 2 months after Yu-gi-oh first aired. (the very first "sock party" in 2001)

and yes, I agree with that "Sticking the kid's faces on socks and making their mouths move to almost match the kid on the phone" thing was dumb too.

I ment Ozzy said "Mine Are Blue" for last year's Sock party.

Personally, I've enjoyed the 'special' events 'til 'round last (last ?) year or so when they just weren't that amusing/entertaining. They were funny in a interesting way and brought more character to the network as different shows interacted with one another. I found them refreshing.

Ironic point: their belch-themed promos IIRC were started during the time KWB aired a show they've long since left for dead/forgotten about, "Animaniacs" (remember the promos with Wakko belching as "Belch-Man"??)...

>>The Powerpuff Girls being on for a shout time-every episode ends the same way. They knock Jackie out for it. If the 8 demons had a fight with the girls the girls would crushed like ants.

Well, not unless they fooled the demons by getting Green Lantern and a few Justice-Leaguers to use his power-ring to switch all their identities, try to imitate each others' powers, switch back to normal, and have GL imprison the demons in a power-ring-generated crypt... er, sorry. Been rereading the old 60's JLA story where they did this to fight the "Demons Three"...

The 8 demons would attacked the girls like piranhas on a cow.
At the very end the girl's souls would be eaten by the demons or Him would take the girl's souls to He-- because the villains were the real stars & tortured for life of what fans said about them & it ani't nice.
Besides the girls don't know how to use Chi-spells, they would lose for sure.

Well, that's where the old comic-book concept of the "crossover" comes in: usually, if the *villains* from another show pop up, the heroes from that show often do as well... :-) (That, and it usually takes the entire JLA membership to waylay the Demons Three...) Though no idea what the Girls would make of Jade (or scientific-minded Prof. Utonium of mysticism-minded Uncle)...

That must have been just for advertising, because they did not even change the type of shows in the process.

Oooh, Uncle cracking the Professor over the head for arguing about the validity of his spells, that would actually be funny. ^^

That must have been just for advertising, because they did not even change the type of shows in the process.

Actually they did, for about a month. When the Kids WB/Toonami block first aired, they actually had episodes of Dragon Ball Z and Sailor Moon on them. However, knowing it was cheaper just to use their own shows instead of borrowed ones from Toonami, they just decided to ditch those shows and make the block the horror that it became.

As for worst "Special Event" I'd have to say "Ask Imoteph". At least all the other events had some line or scene that was actually funny (Even the ones with the sock. In one of the Sock's stupid question shorts, Wolverine came over and tied him into a bow, causing him a lot of pain. Heh) but there was nothing funny about anything Imoteph says at all. At best, he's a fairly decent villian, who is not made to produce any sort of comedey, let alone good comedey.
