I just thought I would share the box office totals for the Cowboy Bebop movie during the weekend of 4/4-4/6. Here is where Cowboy Bebop stands during the weekend along with all the other movies released:

RANK TITLE DIST WEEKEND GROSS TOTAL GROSS WEEKS ON # OF THEATRES
30 - COWBOY BEEBOP GOLD CIRCLE $234,429 $234,429 1 19

As you can see, it's at #30 and with only being in 19 theatres, it has made under 1/4 of a million dollars. This is actually a pretty good total for only playing in a small number of theatres. If you calculated it, approx. each theatre made $12338 for CB, where as the #1 movie Phone Booth, which made a little over $15 million and played in under 2500 theatres, only made approx. $6054 per theatre.

Yeah, if you went by amount made per theatre, Bebop would be second or third.

It did quite well considering its limited release...hopefully this will show Columbia-Tristar that they should try expanding it a little.

Well I'm guessing that they figure that if they released it in more theatres, its per-theatre intake wouldn't be so good. I mean, if bebop was at local theatres, like phone booth or vin diesel's latest trash, anime fans would probably only go to their local theatre. With only 19 theatres, anime fans had to come from all over their respective regions to watch it. And since more people want to see vin diesel act very badly than watch cartoons, it stands to reason that cowboy bebop wouldn't do as good in a wider release. Just a sad fact of life.

Of course, I would love to be wrong. I got to watch bebop on a relatively big screen, but I wanted to watch it at the really big screen at the mainstream movie theatre. So I'm keeping my fingers crossed about a wider release...but i'm not holding my breath or anything.

eek!
